‘Mothers play vital role in bringing up disabled

Hyderabad, August 14: Underlining the importance of mother’s role in bringing up differently-abled children, former president APJ Abdul Kalam today called upon all educational institutions, Non-Government Organisations (NG Os) and philanthropic trusts to offer free education for differently-abled students.

He visited the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH) here today and interacted with the staff, students and parents at the NIMH premises.

Teacher slaps kindergarten student

Hyderabad, August 14: Close on the heels of a headmistress of a government school inflicting burns with a firewood on 12 students in Jamandlapalli village of Mahabubabad mandal in Warangal district, a teacher of a private school in the city allegedly slapped a two-and-half-year old student resulting in injuries on the girl’s face.

Though the incident took place yesterday, the parents of the child lodged a complaint with the police today against the teacher.

Cheaper and Quicker UK Visas for Indian

London, August 13: British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday promised to make the system of issuing visas to Indians quicker and cheaper.

Speaking to UK tourism industry representatives on the need to increase Britain’s revenue from tourism, Cameron said, “Measures to help the industry would be speeding up the process of getting visitors’ visas for the UK in India and China.”

Counselling dates for ICET, EAMCET announced

Hyderabad, August 11: State Higher Education Council Chairman Prof K C Reddy on Wednesday stated the counselling for Integrated Common Entrance Test candidates will begin on August 19.

Talking to media persons, Prof Reddy said the counselling, which was scheduled to begin on July 19, was postponed due to some unavoidable circumstances.

The Prof said that the going might get tough for ICET students since more than 1,50,000 students have cleared the qualifying examinations.

Change in all-India bar exam pattern sought

Hyderabad, August 10: The pattern of all-India Bar examination scheduled to be held on December 5 may be changed. A meeting of 16 of the 19 state bar councils in Hyderabad passed a resolution opposing the current pattern of the exam and made several suggestions to the Bar Council of India.

In the present scheme, whoever has passed LL B in 2010 can appear for the All- India Bar exam, paying a fee of `1,300, six months after enrolling themselves in the state Bar Council. They will be allowed to practise only after clearing the exam.

Anti-ragging campaign on bus in Delhi University

New Delhi, August 10: With the flagging off of a special bus, a national campaign against ragging will be launched in Delhi University (DU) Wednesday.

The campaign titled ‘Bus Aur Nahin’ will be flagged off by Vice-Chancellor Deepak Paintal outside his office in the main campus area at 10.15 a.m.

Goa university to have chair for diaspora studies

Panaji, August 10: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has agreed to create a chair for diaspora studies at the Goa university, Goa non-resident Indian (NRI) commissioner Eduardo Faleiro said Tuesday.

He said at a press conference here that the university had been asked to draft a proposal for creating a diaspora studies chair and send it to the UGC to expedite the process.

Board to regulate madrassa education planned

Lucknow, August 09: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is all set to create its independent education board to institutionalize and modernize madrassa education in the country.

Lucknow’s Naib Imam and prominent member of AIMPLB national executive Maulana Khalid Rasheed told IANS here Monday: “The new board would be set up on the pattern of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and ICSE (Indian Council of Secondary Education), with a view to promote literacy among Muslims.”

‘HRD Ministry to get Rs 2.31 lakh crore over 3 years’

Kolkata, August 08: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the Human Resource Development ministry would be allocated Rs 2.31 lakh crore over the next three years to set up infrastructure for implementing the Right to Education.

“The HRD minister has said that Rs 2,31,000 crore will be required for implementing RTE in the next three years for setting up schools, appointment of teachers and building of infrastructure. I said that the money will be provided,” Mukherjee said at a seminar here.

Muslim organisations planning to set up education board

Lucknow, August 08: In a bid to improve the standard of education and to provide better educational opportunities to their youth, Muslim organisations in the country have taken an initiative to set up a separate board on the lines on ISC and CBSE.

“It has been decided to set up a Muslim Education Board on the lines of ISC and CBSE boards which will give affiliation to religious and non-religious educational institutions in the country,” member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali told PTI.

26 more new engineering colleges get affiliation

Hyderabad, August 07:Clearing the decks for engineering counselling, the All-India Technical Education Council (AICTE) today sanctioned affiliation to 663 engineering colleges including 26 new colleges in the state. The list of engineering colleges which were sanctioned approval was handed over to the delegation of the technical education department in New Delhi today.

B.Ed college fee hiked by Rs 1,100

Hyderabad, August 07: The state government hiked B.Ed fee by Rs 1,100 by an order today from this academic year. The tuition fee of B.Ed has been raised from Rs 12,400 to Rs 13,500 per annum for all A and B category seats in all private unaided colleges (minority and non-minority) in the state for the next three academic years.

The special fee has been fixed at Rs 3,000 per annum.

Haryana releases Rs.50 mn for new military school

Chandigarh, August 07: The Haryana government Saturday released an amount of Rs.50 million for the construction of a new Sainik (military) School in the state.

To be located at Gothra Tappa Khori village in Rewari district, this will be the state’s second Sainik School, which train young boys for a career in the defence forces by preparing them for the National Defence Academy (NDA).

The new school will be constructed at a cost of Rs.250 million.

Class 3 student beaten by principal, arm fractured

Lucknow, August 07: The left arm of a Class 3 student of an Uttar Pradesh school was fractured after the principal allegedly beat him for making noise in the classroom, police said Friday.

The incident took place Thursday at the Igraham Public School of Aligarh district’s Bannadevi area. But it came to light Friday when police booked school principal S.N. Singh for beating eight-year-old Siddharth Kumar.

A fitting lesson to a lecherous teacher

Anantapur, August 07: It was students’ turn to teach a ‘lesson’ to their teachers who allegedly molested girl students studying in Class X at the Zilla Parishad High School at Uravakonda in Anantapur district. The teachers _ Daulat Khan and TK Ranga Prasad _ were beaten black and blue with slippers and sticks before being handed over to the police. Another teacher, P Dastagiri is absconding.

Rights of children should be protected: Justice Kabir

Kochi, August 07: Describing children as “national assets”, a senior Supreme Court judge today asked social and legal service authorities to work together in ensuring that the rights of the child are protected.

“Though there are enough enactments and legislations protecting the rights of Child, they were not being properly implemented,” Justice Altamas Kabir said in his address at a two-day regional conference on ‘Rights of Children and Role of Legal Services Authority’.

Jamia gives free coaching to civil service aspirants

New Delhi, August 06: Jamia Millia Islamia Friday invited applications for free coaching from civil service aspirants belonging to minority communities, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The coaching classes, which started in 1984, get more than 500 applications every year from all over the country.

“Out of more than 500 applications, we select 50 candidates on the basis of the entrance test,” said an official from the Centre for Coaching and Career Planning (CCCP), Jamia Milia Islamia.

Vice Chancellor apologises for ‘sexist’ comments

New Delhi, August 03: Facing flak from various quarters for his alleged sexist comments on women writers, the Vice Chancellor of a central university today tendered an unconditional apology.

Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Antrarashtriya Hindi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Wardha, V N Rai, who reportedly raised question over the character of women Hindi writers, today met HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and explained his stand on the issue.

Hours later, he submitted an unconditional apology, expressing regret over his comments.

Engineering admission counselling to be delayed

Hyderabad, August 03: Counselling for engineering admissions is likely to be delayed further as the All India Technical Education Council (AICTE) is yet to communicate the final list of affiliated engineering colleges in the state to AP State Higher Education Council (APSCHE). Of the about 650 colleges that applied for renewal of affiliation, only 70 got clearance so far.

Quota in legislatures: BC bodies plan demos

Hyderabad, August 03: Several BC organisations, including employees’ associations, in the state have decided to hold demonstrations in front of the Parliament on August 17 and 18 demanding 50 percent reservation for BCs in central and state legislatures. They would also demand reservation for BC employees in departmental promotions.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at BC Bhavan here today. Representatives of nearly 42 BC associations attended the meeting.

Vasavi students demand action against principal
