Change in all-India bar exam pattern sought

Hyderabad, August 10: The pattern of all-India Bar examination scheduled to be held on December 5 may be changed. A meeting of 16 of the 19 state bar councils in Hyderabad passed a resolution opposing the current pattern of the exam and made several suggestions to the Bar Council of India.

In the present scheme, whoever has passed LL B in 2010 can appear for the All- India Bar exam, paying a fee of `1,300, six months after enrolling themselves in the state Bar Council. They will be allowed to practise only after clearing the exam.

The examination consists of 100 questions in various subjects of law. Candidates have to answer at least 40 questions correctly to clear the exam.

The Bar Council of India has assigned the task of conducting the examination to Rainmaker, a private legal firm. This is drawing flak from the legal fraternity.

‘’If candidates have to appear for the exam six months after enrolment, what should they do during this six months? We have requested the Bar Council to provide some kind of apprenticeship for them during these six months on legal procedures,’’ Bar Council of India member M Rajender Reddy said.

It was he, who convened a meeting of state bar council chairmen to discuss the issue. ‘’And the questions in the exam should be based on what they learnt during training period rather than what they studied during graduation,’’ he added. In a resolution sent to the BCI, the meeting also felt the need for reduction in the exam fee for SC, ST candidates.

He said instead of assigning the job of conducting the bar exam to Rainmaker,it should be given to one of the national law universities.
