C K Babu arrested

Tirupati, April 28: Congress candidate for Chittoor assembly constituency C K Jayachandra Reddy alias C K Babu was arrested on Monday following a complaint

lodged by TDP leaders at Yadamarri police station in Chittoor.

The TDP leaders complained that CK was involved in the attack on the house of a TDP MPTC member Chitti, which was destroyed by a mob in Dasaravaripalle village on the night of April 24. The MPTC member alleged that CK along with 40 other Congressmen was involved in the attack on his house.

Based on his complaint, police arrested CK. He was later released on bail.

party president K Chiranjeevi.

The 14-member PAC would be meeting for the first time since the completion of general elections, and would take stock of the post-poll situation in the state and at the Centre. Party sources said that the PAC would elicit views of the members on a variety of possibilities, including the game plan to be adopted in case of a hung assembly.

Election Commission gives clean chit to YSR

Hyderabad, April 22: The Election Commission has given clean chit to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for his remarks on separate state of Telanagana.
The poll panel found nothing objectionable in the chief minister’s speech at Nandyal in Kurnool district, state’s chief electoral officer I.V. Subba Rao told reporters here Tuesday.

The four-party Grand Alliance led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had complained to the Election Commission that the chief minister was trying to create animosities among people by inciting one region against the other.

Human trafficking law to be redrawn

Abu Dhabi, April 22: The Government will strengthen the law on human trafficking to make it easier to prosecute the gangs behind it, a senior Ministry of Interior official said yesterday.

Officials will redraw the classifications for human trafficking offences, Col Ahmed al Muharami, the manager of the human rights department at the ministry, said at a symposium in the capital.

The Government also plans to compile a database of offenders and victims to help keep tabs on the illegal trade and improve the sharing of information among UAE authorities.

HYDERABAD, April 22: Expressing serious concern over the lack of security for the lower-level judicial officials, several judges of the AP High Court on Tuesday conveyed their apprehensions to the Chief Justice Anil Ramesh Dave after the Tuesday’s acid attack on one of the district judges in East Godavari district.

The chief justice has called for a report on the alleged incident from the district and sessions judge of East Godavari.

Islamabad, April 16: Verdicts handed down under the newly-imposed Sharia laws in parts of Pakistan’s restive northwest cannot be challenged in the Supreme Court but only before special appeal courts, says a Taliban-linked radical cleric.
“The judicial system here (Malakand division of the North West Frontier Province) will be different from the rest of the country. Here, all the cases will be settled in the Qazi courts in accordance with Sharia,” The News Thursday quoted Sufi Muhammad as saying.

Iraq air raids hit mostly women and children

Baghdad, April 16: Air strikes and artillery barrages have taken a heavy toll among the most vulnerable of the Iraqi people, with children and women forming a disproportionate number of the dead.

Analysis carried out for the research group Iraq Body Count (IBC) found that 39 per cent of those killed in air raids by the US-led coalition were children and 46 per cent were women. Fatalities caused by mortars, used by American and Iraqi government forces as well as insurgents, were 42 per cent children and 44 per cent women.

US, Israel To Test 3 Missile Defence Systems

Jerusalem, April 15: Israel and its closest ally US will test three different ballistic missile defence (BMD) systems in an unprecedented joint exercise later this year to thwart any danger emanating from Iran’s pursuit for nuclear capability, a media report said.

The exercise named “Juniper Cobra”, which is to be held in Israel, is set to include the newly developed indigenous Arrow 2, America’s THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) and the ship-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence systems, the ‘Jerusalem Post’ said, without mentioning the exact dates for the exercise.

North Korea launches rocket

Tokyo, April 05: North Korea launched a rocket Sunday, a South Korean foreign ministry official told Yonhap news agency.

Pyongyang said it was putting a communications satellite into orbit, but Japan, South Korea and Washington believe the launch was a screen to test a long-range ballistic missile.

The launch occurred around 11.30 a.m. (0230 GMT) from North Korea’s base on its east coast, the official said.

Durban, April 04: Captain Ricky Ponting hailed the return to form of Mike Hussey as Australia gained a crushing 141-run win over South Africa in the first One-Day International at Kingsmead on Friday.

Hussey hit 83 not out as Australia piled up 286 for seven. South Africa were bowled out for 145 in the opening encounter of a five-match series.
