AAP slams Goa government for not moving SC in mining case

The AAP in Goa has slammed the state government’s decision against challenging a Bombay High Court verdict that allows renewal of more than two dozen leases of iron ore mines, citing timely payment of stamp duty by the mining companies.

By not challenging the Aug 13 order of the Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court, the Goa government was losing as much as Rs.2850 crore in revenue, said Aam Aadmi Party in a statement.

Veteran Bengali singer Arati Mukherji Tuesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“We welcome her with all the respect and hope her contribution will help revive Bengal’s glory and enrich the state’s culture,” state BJP President Rahul Sinha told reporters.

The National Film Award-winner has sung in Hindi films like “Geet Gata Chal” (1975), “Tapasya” (1976), “Manokamana” and “Masoom” (1983).

Ebola toll rises to 31 in DRC

The toll from an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has increased from 13 to 31, an advisor to the minister of health said Tuesday.

“The official account was 13 deaths, and then we add the 18 deaths, giving us a total of 31 deaths,” Shodu Lomani told Xinhua.

The Ebola outbreak was recorded in Djera, a remote region in the country’s northwest province of Equateur.

The government has banned travel out of the affected region by anyone who may show signs of the Ebola virus disease, said Lomani.

England were bowled out for 206 runs in 49.3 overs against India in the fourth ODI of the five-match cricket series at Edgbaston here Tuesday.

Moen Ali was the top scorer with a quick-fire 67 off 50 balls while Joe Root (44) and Eoin Morgan (32) made valuable contributions.

Sensex closes above 27,000-mark

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets breached the 27,000-mark for the first time to hit a record high of 27,082.85 points Tuesday — surpassing its previous peak of 26,900.30 points scaled Sep 1.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,888.21 points, closed trade at 27,019.39 points, up 151.84 points or 0.57 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,867.55 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 27,082.85 points and a low of 26,886.22 points in the intra-day.

PTI leader Javed Hashmi quits Pakistan parliament

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president Javed Hashmi Tuesday resigned from the membership of parliament, a day after his startling revelation that the current political crisis in the country was scripted.

“Honourable speaker, as for resignations, I resign from my seat…I am going back to the people of Pakistan,” Dawn online quoted him as saying during a joint session of parliament.

He said that no PTI member resigned willingly. “People did not resign of their own will but I am resigning now,” he said.

Nine killed in Egypt stampede

Nine people were killed Tuesday in a stampede at a military institute in Egypt’s Suez Canal city of Ismailia, an Egyptian military spokesman said.

The stampede took place as relatives of the students of the institute of the non-commissioned army officers in Tel El-Kebir gathered around the gates of the facility, Xinhua reported citing spokesman Mohamed Samir.

Five others were wounded in the accident and were transferred to nearby hospitals.

The Egyptian Armed Forces extended condolences to the families of the victims, according to the statement.

Himachal BJP seeks disqualification of four independent MLAs

The opposition BJP in Himachal Pradesh Tuesday sought disqualification of four independent legislators from the assembly for describing themselves as associate members of the Congress.

“We gave a petition to Speaker B.B.L. Butail demanding suspension of four independent MLAs — Manohar Dhiman, Pawan Kajal, Kirnesh Jang and Balbir Verma,” BJP chief whip Suresh Bhardwaj told reporters here.

He said the public had given them mandate as independent members but now they had joined the Congress party.

Assembly officials said the speaker has not taken any call so far on the complaint.

India, Japan will steer the 21st century, says Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said India and Japan’s friendship will determine the course of the 21st century.

“There is no doubt that the 21st century belongs to Asia. But India and Japan’s friendship will determine how it will actually look like,” Modi told the Indian community in Japan after inaugurating the Vivekananda Cultural Centre here.

“The state and direction of the 21st century will depend on the direction in which Japan and India try to take the world,” he said.

Ban on idol immersion in Yamuna

Immersion of Ganesh idols in the Yamuna river will not be permitted in Agra.

After several rounds of talks involving voluntary groups and police, district authorities Tuesday announced plans to develop “immersion tanks” at the ghats.

A similar exercise is being undertaken in nearby Mathura and Vrindavan.

The Allahabad High Court last year directed the Uttar Pradesh government to make alternative arrangements for immersion of idols to prevent pollution of rivers and other water bodies.

Over 600,000 perform Manimahesh pilgrimage in Himachal

Over 600,000 devotees took part in the 17-day annual pilgrimage to the Manimahesh lake located at an altitude of 13,500 feet in Himachal Pradesh, an official said.

“Over 200,000 pilgrims reached the Manimahesh lake in the last two days,” Additional District Magistrate and pilgrimage in-charge Lakshmi Kant Sharma told IANS.

The pilgrimage ended Tuesday on Radhashtami (the birth of Lord Krishna’s companion Radha) amid chanting of religious hymns at the lake.

Delhi Metro services affected after OHE wire breaks down

Metro Services of Line 3/4 (Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali) were affected today for about an hour when a portion of the OHE (Over Head Electricity) wire broke down between Janakpuri West and Uttam Nagar East station of the line going towards Dwarka.

The train services were mainly affected from 08:24 am to 09:47 am between Jankapuri West and Dwarka section of UP line.

Suspected LeT operatives’ judicial custody extended

A court here Tuesday extended, till Sep 16, the judicial custody of suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Abdul Subhan, arrested in a case of planning terror attacks in India, and his aide Asahbuddin.

Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh extended the judicial custody for next 14 days, after the two were produced before him on expiry of their custody.

Sources said Abdul Subhan’s name surfaced during the interrogation of two youth from Mewat in Haryana, who were arrested in December last year.

Seculars in India might be debating that Modi has made Bhagawad Gita also communal.”

Modi copying Obama, says Amarinder

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “trying to copy” US President Barack Obama in most things that he does, Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh said Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, Amarinder Singh said the latest example of this copying was Modi’s proposed address to students across the country on Teachers’ Day Sep 5.

“It is strange that Mr. Modi shall be addressing students and not teachers on Teachers’ Day,” he said.

Amarinder Singh said Obama had addressed students in the US Sep 8, 2009.

National Geographic to telecast film on Hyderabd metro

National Geographic Channel will telecast next month a film on the Hyderabad metro rail project, which is currently under construction, as part of its series on megastructures.

The premiere of ‘Connecting the city of Nizams: Hyderabad Metro’ will be Oct 19 at 6 p.m.

This is the first in the series of three films the channel is producing, said L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL), the developer of Rs.14,132 crore project.

LTMRHL officials said this is the first time that National Geographic Channel would be showcasing a metro rail project under its series on megastructures.

30 fall ill after consuming prasad in Assam

At least 30 people were taken ill after consuming prasad of soaked gram in two places of Sonitpur district.

Deputy Commissioner Lalit Gogoi today said a special medical team has been engaged to treat the affected persons — 15 each in Dhekiajuli and Tezpur.

Complaining of nausea, diarrhoea and fever, 15 people fell ill after they had prasad at a person’s residence in the Ward No. 3 of Dhekiajuli town on Saturday.

Senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh today took a dig at Narendra Modi over his planned interaction with school children on Teachers’ Day and said the Prime Minister was “indiscriminately trying to copy” US President Barack Obama in almost everything the latter does.

“It is strange Modi shall be addressing students and not the teachers on Teachers’ Day,” Singh, who is the Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, said in a statement here.

He said the US President addressed the students of his country on September 8, 2009 and now “Mr Modi is trying to copy the same”.

Liquor banned at National Police Academy in Hyderabad

Liquor has been banned at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad where a trainee IPS officer drowned in a swimming pool after a party five days ago.

“It is hereby ordered that no liquor will be served in the officers club of SVP National Police Academy. It is also directed that hereafter no liquor will be served in any official function of the Academy,” Director of SVPNPA Aruna Bahuguna wrote in an order.

The order was issued a day after Manu Mukt Manav, the IPS trainee, drowned in the swimming pool of the Academy in Hyderabad on August 28 night.
