According to researchers at the University of Iowa, pigeons can place everyday things in categories and, like people, they can hone in on visual information that is new or important and dismiss what is not.

Sonia files nomination from Rae Bareli

Congress president Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination papers for the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat Wednesday.

The UPA chairperson arrived to a rousing welcome in Rae Bareli along with her son and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

After a brief ‘havan’ at a party loyalist’s house, she drove to the collector’s office to file her nomination. Sonia Gandhi has represented Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha since 2004.

No ‘apprehensions’ among minorities about Modi: Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said there are no apprehensions among minorities in the state about Narendra Modi becoming prime minister.

“There are no apprehensions (about Modi becoming PM),” Parrikar told reporters here, four days after senior BJP leader and Goa Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza had said that minorities continue to be “apprehensive” about Modi.

There are certain people who are “trying to create the apprehensions,” Parrikar claimed.

Goa has 27 per cent of Catholic population.

One killed, three hurt in Cairo blasts

Two blasts occurred Wednesday outside Cairo University, one of Egypt’s most prominent and oldest universities, leaving one person dead and three others injured, a media report said.

The explosions happened in the vicinity of the engineering faculty at Cairo University, Xinhua reported citing state-run Nile-TV, adding it was not immediately clear what caused the blasts.

A security source told Xinhua that crude bombs were used in the explosions.

NIA, Delhi Police both want custody of IM operatives

The NIA and Delhi Police both want the custody of two suspected Indian Mujahideen’s operatives.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) told a court here Wednesday that it wants the custody of suspected IM operatives Tehsin Akhtar alias Monu and Waqas alias Zia-ur-Rehman in the 2013 Dilsukhnagar blasts in Hyderabad.

The NIA argued that since it is a federal unit, it has the right to arrest and interrogate suspects.

Poll manifesto of SP promises special benefits for Muslims

A manifesto for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was released by the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday .The party promised to provide special benefits to the Muslim by wooing them.

Furthermore, the manifesto mentioned the setting up of a special commission to look at the needs of poor upper caste members. The party promised to concentrate on the development in Purvanchal and Bundelkhand regions and increase agricultural land in the state.

The online sale of tickets for the seventh edition of the IPL, the first half of which has been shifted here due to the general elections in India, will start tomorrow.

HDFC mutual fund retains top slot; ICICI Pru catches up

ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund is set to beat HDFC Mutual Fund for the top slot on the back of a strong 22 percent growth in its average asset under management in the January-March quarter, according to data released Tuesday by the Association of Mutual Funds in India.

ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund grew its assets by about 22 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of the financial year ended March 31. With this growth, the company has entered into the Rs.1 trillion club.

Congress, CPI finalises seat-sharing pact

The Congress and Communist Party of India (CPI) on Wednesday finalised the seat sharing agreement.

As per the understanding, the CPI would contest on one Lok Sabha and nine Assembly segments. Besides Khammam Lok Sabha constituency, the CPI will also contest from Kothagudem, Pinapaka, Wyra, Munuguru, Devarakonda, Bellampalli, Station Ghanpur, Maheshwaram and Bahadurpura Assembly segments.

Sidharth plans to fly down to Delhi to vote

(IANS) Model-turned-actor Sidharth Malhotra, who is from Delhi, says he will cast his vote if he gets time and urged youngsters to participate in the elections and exercise their voting rights.

The 29-year-old, seen in films “Student of The Year” and “Hasee Toh Phasee”, currently lives in Mumbai to pursue his Bollywood career.

“If I will get the time, I would want to go to Delhi to cast my vote as my voting card is from Delhi,” Sidharth told reporters here Tuesday at the red carpet of the Mijwan Fashion show.

Researchers at Ohio State University have found a way for computers to recognise 21 distinct facial expressions.

“We have gone beyond facial expressions for simple emotions like happy or sad. We found a strong consistency in how people move their facial muscles to express 21 categories of emotions,” said Aleix Martinez, a cognitive scientist and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Ohio State.

9-yr old sister slits the throat of her brother

A nine-year-old tribal girl slit the throat of her five-year-old brother at Seldouri village in Jagannathpur block of West Singhbhum district.

According to a delayed report received here, the girl, who had consumed hadia (popular rice beer among tribals), in an inebriated state slit the throat of her brother, who was playing in front of the house, Bertinus Kullu, Sub-divisional Police Officer, Jagannathpur, said.

The parents of the siblings were away for work when the incident took place yesterday.

Women crime less in male-dominated societies!

Feminists would take this with a grain of salt as a new study has found that rates of rape, sexual assault and homicide are actually lower in societies with more men than women.

Male-biased sex ratio does not lead to more crime, the study found.

In societies where men outnumber women, the men do not necessarily resort to violent competition for the limited number of mates, said the study.

“Evidence does not support a relationship between violence and a short supply of women,” said Ryan Schacht, a doctoral researcher at University of California, Davis.

R K Aaseri, principal, medical college, Kota today said that 63 children and 25 women were admitted to hospital last night after complaining of stomach ache, vomiting and dehydration.
The victims had consumed Ratanjot (poisonous fruit) seeds mistaking them to be almonds at a marriage function.
