CBSE Class X, XII exams to begin today

The Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) Class X and XII exams are beginning on Friday.

While over 12 lakh students will appear for the Class X examination, nearly 10 lakh will sit for the Class XII test.

In all, 12,59,202 students will be sitting for the class X examination, an increase of 6.70 per cent over last year.

Similarly, 9,42,035 students will be taking the class XII examination also beginning March 1, which is an increase of 15.51 per cent over last year.

The self-proclaimed Muslim hater who pushed an innocent man of Indian origin to his death in front of a subway train has been found fit for trial for a second time. Erika Menendez, 31, also fired her family-retained attorneys because she distrusts them and chose court-appointed attorney Joseph DeFelice to represent her, booting private attorney Thomas A. Kenniff, reports New York Post. Kenniff claimed that though Menendez was found fit to stand trial, she does suffer from severe psychiatric issues.

Singer Janet Jackson said on Monday that she married her Qatari businessman boyfriend last year, quashing media reports of upcoming nuptials.

Jackson, 46, the younger sister of the late singer Michael Jackson, was married to billionaire Wissam Al Mana, 37, last year but kept the news under wraps.

“The rumors regarding an extravagant wedding are simply not true. Last year we were married in a quiet, private, and beautiful ceremony,” Jackson and Al Mana said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight.

Every rape case to be tried in-camera: police to Delhi HC

The Delhi Police today opposed the media plea seeking access to the trial in the December 16 gang rape case telling the High Court that the enquiry and trial in every rape case should be held in-camera. Appearing for the police before Justice Rajiv Shakdher, Special Public Prosecutor Dayan Krishnan countered the claim of petitioners that this case is “exceptional” and the media has an independent right derived from the Constitution. “The enquiry and also trial in a rape case has to be held in-camera in the interest of justice”, he said.

Rs. 1000 cr agreed for minority budget as against proposed 1480 cr

Government has agreed to allocate a budget of Rs 1000 crore for Minority Welfare for the year 2013-14. This was assured by finance minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy in a meeting held with Minority Welfare Minister Syed Ahmedullah, Principal Secretary Minority Welfare I Rani Kumudini and officials of minority institutions.

He claimed that government is serious over educational and economic development of minorities and if government institutions spend all the amount under all schemes till 3rd trimester then government can mull over releasing further 100 to 150 crore rupees.

AP Legislature Budget session from March 13

Budget session of Andhra Pradesh Legislature will commence from March 13 with Governor E S L Narasimhan’s address to the joint sitting of Legislative Council and Assembly. Finance Minister Aanam Ramanarayana Reddy will present the Budget on March 18. Thereafter, the Legislature will have a month-long break to enable the proposed departmental Standing Committees to study the Budget proposals in detail, Legislature sources said.

Mobile cos tell court they can’t provide call records free

Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) today told the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act Court here that it cannot provide call data records (CDR) to the accused of 2006 Mumbai train blasts case free. The company told the court that its accumulated losses as of May 31, 2012 were Rs 3031.18 crore. “If the cost of retrieving the CDRs is not allowed to be recovered, then the company which is already incurring huge losses, and ultimately its more than 4.5 lakh shareholders, would have to bear this cost,” said Prashant Padvale, Assistant Manager, in an application.

Prank caller held for ringing up police control room

A prank caller who allegedly made several calls to the police control room here was arrested today and produced before a local court. On a tip off, the Narayanguda police arrested Nenawath Bheemlal, holding him responsible for dialling ‘100’ several times from his mobile and for abusing the operator of the Main Police Control Room in “filthy” language, the police said. He kept the number busy for two hours, though it is meant for emergencies, the police said.

‘Good results’ on India’s oil payment issue: Larijani

Iran today indicated that some ways might have been found to address the issue of Indian payments for Iranian oil in wake of the financial sanctions against it. “There are people on my delegation, who have been in contact with Indian players. We have been talking to each other to find mechanism. We have good results,” Speaker of Iranian Consultative Assembly (Majlis) Ali Larijani said. He was asked whether the issue of oil payments figured during his talks with Indian leaders and if any progress was made to come up with payment mechanism.

AP Congress government lauds budget, while opposition slams it

Andhra Pradesh government today hailed the Union Budget 2013-14 as “welfare and development oriented” even as opposition parties dubbed it anti-poor and “pro-corporate”. “The union budget will enable growth of every sector. Certain measures announced by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram will benefit Andhra Pradesh,” state finance Minister Aanam Ramanarayana Reddy said in a statement. The state was expected to get Rs 1000 crore in the form of sales tax compensation, for the past two years.

Swine flu claims two women’s lives

Swine flu claimed lives of two women at private hospitals here, raising the death toll to three this year in Indore, health officials said. A 50-year-old woman of Khargon city succumbed to the dreaded disease at Rajshree Hospital here this morning, while another 35-year old woman of Dewas died of H1N1 at Gokuldas Hospital on February 26, Medical Officer G L Sodhi told PTI. The Dewas woman’s H1N1 positive report came yesterday, while the Khargon woman’s report came from Jabalpur laboratory this evening, Sodhi said.

A balanced budget in tough conditions: Cong

Lauding the Union Budget as a “pragmatic balance” between fiscal prudence and public welfare, Congress today dismissed criticism from Opposition and some allies that it was “anti-farmer and anti-poor”. “The interests of farmers are first and foremost in the mind of the Government and the interests of farmers will, in no way, be compromised. The budget is certainly not anti-farmer. Huge outlays have been made for farming sector,” party spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said at the AICC briefing.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said she was happy that her party Trinamool Congress could win in one of the three bypolls in the state. “We have won at least one seat in an area where we had none,” Banerjee said. “The party has done well in the English Bazar seat in Malda district. I have congratulated our candidate Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury for his win,” the Chief Minister said. Cong retains power in Meghalaya, blunts P A Sangma challenge

Blunting the challenge posed by P A Sangma, Congress emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya today bagging 29 seats falling short of majority by two in the Assembly polls and is set to retain power with the help of Independents. The United Democratic Party(UDP), which was the key ally of Congress for the past three years in the Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government, retained eight out of 11 seats it won in 2008. The two parties, however, did not have any pre-poll alliance and it was not immediately known if the two parties could again come together to form a government.

Budget lacks strategy and vision for India’s development: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said that the UPA government’s budget lacks a growth strategy and vision to develop India’s economy. Coming down heavily on the budget, he said that there is a lack of co-ordination between the 12th Five Year Plan and the budget presented for the year 2013-14 by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram. SC declines AP govt’s plea against Babhali barrage

The Supreme Court today declined the plea of Andhra Pradesh government against the construction of Babhali barrage by Maharashtra in Nanded district for utilising the water of Godavari river. The apex court said, “On the basis of facts which have come on record, a case of substantial injury of a serious magnitude and high equity that moves the conscience of the court has not been made out by Andhra Pradesh justifying grant of injunction.

Rape accused get sentenced within 2-and-half months of crime

A local court in Multai town of Betul district has awarded ten years’ rigorous imprisonment to three persons for gang-raping a minor girl last December. Additional Sessions Judge S C Upadhyaya also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on Sanju Dhimer, Manish Prajapati and Pappu Prajapati in the verdict announced yesterday. The accused gang-raped the victim after kidnapping her on December 16, said Superintendent of Police Lalit Shakyawar. Police completed the probe within 13 days and the case was submitted for trial which got over in 58 days. PTI

An all-women bank by November

Finance Minister P Chidambaram today proposed setting up an all-women bank, which will become operational by November this year. “This bank will be a reality by the end of October and I want to cross an invite to Ms Sushma Swaraj and Mr L K Advani (senior BJP leaders) and all others for inauguration in November,” Chidambaram said in his post Budget interaction with media here. “I…propose to set up India’s first women bank as a public sector bank. I shall provide Rs 1,000 crore as initial capital,” he said.

Channel 4 video not part of UN rights resolution: Lanka

Sri Lanka today said that a British channel video featuring the images of the alleged cold-blooded killing of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran’s 12-year-old son would not be part of the official process of the ongoing UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva. Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Geneva Ravinatha Ariyasinha told media that he had met the Chairman of the UNHRC after his letter of protest on Monday. “I met the President of the UNHRC Remigusz Henczel to protest about the screening of the video. He assured me that it would not reflect the official position of the Council,” Aryasinha said.

Boy fails in test for HS exam, kills mother

A 19-year-old boy today strangulated his mother to death in North 24 Parganas district, apparently in fear of being exposed that he had failed to clear the test to appear for the Higher Secondary Examination, the police said. Sourav Khilari first sprinkled chili powder on the eyes of his mother Mousumi Khilari (45) and then strangulated her using a skipping rope, the sources said. The woman managed to raise an alarm, following which their neighbours at Green Park under Belgharia police station reached there, broke open the door of their flat and found the woman lying dead.
