Researchers have successfully engineered cartilage from induced pluripotent stem cells which can be used to repair body tissues.

A team of researchers from Duke Medicine suggest that induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, may be a viable source of patient-specific articular cartilage tissue.

Sandy leaves 40 dead, 7.5 million without power in US

As Hurricane Sandy lost its ferocious punch and veered towards Canada leaving a trail of destruction up and down the US East Coast, President Barack Obama cautioned “The storm is not over yet.” It left at least 40 dead and some 7.5 million people without power along the East Coast with New York’s subway system paralysed by flooded tunnels and much of America’s financial hub of Manhattan, in the dark.

They asked: “What are the rights of the way?” He (s.a.w.s.) said: “To lower your gaze (on seeing what is illegal to look at), and (removal of harmful objects), returning greetings, enjoining good and forbidding wrong”.

Hafiz Saeed offers aid to superstorm victims in US

JuD chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the 2008 Mumbai attacks mastermind and for whom the US has offered a bounty of USD 10 million, on Tuesday said his organisation was ready to help Americans affected by the superstorm Sandy.

“We are ready to send food items, medicines and doctors to the US for the people affected by the storm,” Saeed said.

He said though the US had put a bounty on his head, it was the duty of Muslims to help fellow human beings, irrespective of their faith, during a natural catastrophe.

Slight intensity quake felt in Assam

A slight intensity quake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit Marigaon area of Assam this morning, officials said.

The quake which took place at 7.10 am was epicentred at 92.4 degrees north latitude and 26.2 degrees east longitude, India Meteorological Department officials here said.

A mild quake with a magnitude of 3.4 had hit West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya yesterday at around 6 am, they said.

Bail granted to Darsgah-e-Shahadath activists

(Siasat News) Eight Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate granted bail to 15 activists of Darsgah-e-Shahadath and ordered for their release from jail and told them a deposit Rs. 5,000 each. It may be recalled that these activists had staged dharna in front of the office of Mr. M. Kishtaiah, ACP Meer Chowk alleging him of the harassment of the innocent Muslim youths. The dharna was organized on Friday, 19th October. Police of Meer chowk had registered criminal cases against these activists and had sent them to jail after arresting.

Cyclone ‘Nilam’ expected to make landfall this evening

Cyclone Nilam is expected to make a landfall this evening between Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, bringing in heavy rains in the region, with tide levels reaching 1.5 meters.

“The cyclonic storm, which lay about 320 km south-south east of Chennai at 5.30pm on Wednesday, will move north-north westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh between Cuddalore and Nellore near Chennai by October 31 evening”, a weather bulletin by the Met department said.

No proper facilities for Hajj pilgrims at airport

(Siasat News) The management of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport received Rs. 96 lakh as its income from the Hajj pilgrims alone by way of collecting user charges from Hajj pilgrims a sum of Rs. 900 were collected with 50% concession. All the pilgrims departed from the Hajj Terminal. They had to pay the user fees without utilizing the requisite facilities.

In the name of providing special facilities, the airport authorities constructed a shed at the Hajj Terminal without providing the minimum facilities which are available to other passengers at the airport.

Russian woman sentenced for kidnapping daughter

A French court has awarded a two-year suspended sentence to a Russian woman accused of kidnapping her daughter and orchestrating an attack on her ex-husband.

Though Irina Belenkaya will not be serving her sentence in prison, Judge Paulette Leclanche put her on probation for five years as well as ordered that she should pay her French ex-husband Jean-Michel Andre 8,000 euros ($10,300) in moral compensation.

Belenkaya said she was satisfied as the sentence for her is conditional and she would not go to prison.

No helmet, no petrol rule in UP National/Law/Rights

In a move aimed at ensuring road safety, the Uttar Pradesh government has directed petrol pump owners to not give fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets.

The directives were issued Tuesday at the behest of state Transport Minister Raja Aridaman Singh.

After the orders from the minister, transport officials and police have been asked to check for the implementation of the diktat.

Lucknow accounts for the highest number of road mishaps involving two wheelers in the state.

JK Tyre Q2 net profit at Rs.25.99 crore

JK Tyre has reported a net profit of Rs.25.99 crore for the quarter ended Sep 30, due to various cost control measures, the company said.

The tyre major Tuesday reported that its total income during the period rose to Rs.1,321.96 crore from Rs.1,246.01 crore in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

The company had reported a net loss of Rs.54.99 crore for the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal.

According to the company, its net sales in the quarter under review grew by almost 6 percent at Rs.1,313 crore from Rs.1,241 crore as compared to the same period of 2011-12.

Minor earthquake in Rajasthan

A minor earthquake measuring 3.5 on Richter scale tonight jolted Rajasthan’s western region.

The tremors were felt in Barmer and nearby areas at 2252 hrs.

The epicentre was Barmer,according to Met department here.

The intensity of the quake was said to be slight.

Police sources said that was no loss of human life or property.

Bird flu in Karnataka: Kerala bans poultry from outside

Kerala has banned entry of poultry from other states following detection of avian influenza (bird flu) in a central government farm at Hesserghatt in southern Karnataka.

Following an intimation in this regard from the Karnataka Government, the state Animal Husbandry Department has banned movement of poultry from both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu since last evening, official sources said on Tuesday.

Gujarat court asks Zakia Jafri to file protest petition by Nov 7

A local court on Tuesday granted more time to Zakia Jafri to file a protest petition challenging the Closure Report of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) which gave a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi among others in the 2002 riot cases.

The court of metropolitan magistrate B J Ganatra today directed Zakia to either inform the court about the status of the Special Leave Petition (SLP) she had filed in the Supreme Court or file a protest petition by November 7.

Modi insulted all women by his comments on Tharoor’s wife: Congress

Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhvadia on Tuesday alleged Chief Minister Narendra Modi had insulted all women in the country with his comment on Union Minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife.

Modi, of late, was using language that did not fit for a political leader and had lost “decency”, Modhvadia added.

“Recently, on the issue of malnutrition, Modi had said that as Gujarati women are beauty-conscious, malnutrition is high in Gujarat.

“I personally, on behalf of the people of Gujarat, apologise to those against whom the Chief Minister has made these remarks,” Modhvadia said.
