Pakistani gets death for policeman’s murder

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has sentenced a man to death for killing a policeman.

The court in Rawalpindi Saturday also imposed a fine of Rs.100,000 on Kashif Hussain for killing policeman Ashiq Hussain and injuring two other police officials during a raid at a hideout of suspected car thieves in May 2011, the Dawn reported Sunday.

The man was charged with murder and possession of illegal weapons. He was also wanted in a vehicle theft case in May 2011.

Politics full of dirt: Social activist Anna Hazare

Maintaining strong opposition to entering politics as it is “full of dirt”, Anna Hazare today claimed that he did not get answers from Arvind Kejriwal-led group on questions raised by him on how to organise a political alternative.

Hazare, who arrived here this morning and met activists to chalk out the next course of action on an apolitical anti-corruption movement, said the path of “politics is not sacred and it is full of dirt” but the route of agitation is “sacred”.

FinMin opposes levy on electronic products imports

Information Technology Ministry’s proposal to levy a cess on import of electronic products to create a corpus for development of domestic industry, has been opposed by the Finance Ministry.

While the Planning Commission and the Commerce Ministry have supported the proposal, the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) and the Department of Agriculture have expressed some reservations, sources privy to the development said.

Planning Commission, they said, is of the view that to support electronics sector, a cess may be imposed for 10 years and the quantum of it can be appropriately fixed.

IAF to unveil radar plane, choppers at 80th anniversary parade

India will showcase its latest air force acquisitions — an indigenous airborne radar plane and a Russian-origin cargo helicopter — at this year’s Air Force Day parade that marks its 80th anniversary, a week from now.

“This year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) completes its 80 years. We will showcase our latest acquisitions such as the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft and the Mi-17V5 cargo chopper at the Air Force Day parade, Oct 8,” an IAF officer told IANS here Sunday.

Bhutan to inaugurate new airport

Bhutan is to inaugurate its third domestic airport in Gelephu next month.

Two more airports in Bumthang and Trashigang will be relaunched next month, the national newspaper Kuensel reported. The airports would be serviced by national carrier Drukair, which also operates its only international flights from Paro, the gateway to the mystical Buddhist nation that is seeking to keep a fine balance between modernisation and tradition.

With a population of just over 650,000, Bhutan is bordered to the south, east and west by India and to the north by China. India is its main trade partner.

EC mulling foolproof methods to ensure EVMs are not misused

The Election Commission has told the Supreme Court that “it is contemplating foolproof methods” to ensure that electronic voting machines (EVMs) are not misused or tampered with as is being feared in some quarters.

Appearing for the poll panel before a bench of justices P Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi, senior counsel Ashok Desai said the EC was taking various steps in consultation with technical experts and eliciting the views of all recognised political parties on the issue.

Krishna to meet Clinton tomorrow; hike in Visa fee on agenda

The issue of US visa fee hike, which has hurt several Indian IT firms, is expected to come up for discussion when External Affairs Minister S M Krishna meets US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton here tomorrow on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.

India has “consistently” taken up the issue of the visa fee hike with the US and the issue will figure in talks between Krishna and Clinton, official sources told PTI here.

The US had raised visa fee in 2010 to fund its enhanced costs on securing border with Mexico under the Border Security Act.

BJP State Chief Kishan Reddy received threats

Mr. G.Kishan Reddy, State President of BJP has registered a complaint with Cyber Crime police that he received a threat on his face book from a Pakistani national Ikram Shah that he should not make statements about the anti-Muslim film otherwise he has to face dire consequences. He told that the Pakistani National has threatened to kill him.

Mr. Reddy has requested the police to conduct investigations and find out the details of the said person.

Bangalore Police raids two Internet centers in city

In connection with Bangalore Terrorist Attack case, Bangalore Police brought Obaidur Rahman and his companion Mohammed Akram to Hyderabad from Bangalore and raided two Internet centers in the city. Bangalore Police produced these two youths before the local magistrate in Bangalore. On completion of their two days additional period of custody, Obaidur Rahman was given in judicial custody for 14 days and Mohammed Akram was shifted to Maharastra in a case registered in Aurangabad.

Kerala CM’s injured legs get an ayurvedic make-over

An old leg injury has forced Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to remain mostly indoors for the past two weeks and now an ayurvedic treatment is expected to put him well back on his feet.

Since Sep 16, Chandy is troubled by his nagging leg injury caused by a fall in Davos, Switzerland, in 2006, when he was headed for the World Economic Forum meeting.

Tension in parts of Hyderabad as Telangana march begins

Tension prevailed in parts of Hyderabad as hundreds of pro-Telangana activists were reaching the Necklace Road Sunday to participate in a march to demand separate Telangana state.

Telangana protagonists from various parts of Hyderabad and neighbouring districts started reaching the venue on the bank of Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city since Sunday morning. Protestors were trying to take out rallies to reach the Necklace Road.

Tension prevailed at Osmania University, the nerve centre of the movement for separate state, as students clashed with police.

Pakistan wants lasting solution to Kashmir issue: Zardari

Pakistan wants a “result-oriented uninterrupted dialogue” with India that will help find a permanent solution to the Kashmir dispute, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari told Kashmiri leader and Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Mohammad Umar Farooq.

Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s stance to continue support to the Kashmiri cause at a meeting with the Mirwaiz, who heads the moderate faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported Sunday.

Complaint against Ajay Devgn for defaming Sikhs in Son of Sardar’

A complaint has been filed in a court in New Delhi against Bollywood actor-producer Ajay Devgn for allegedly maligning and defaming the Sikhs in his upcoming film Son of Sardar.

The complaint has been filed by Ravinder Singh,who claims to be a member of a Sikh organisation Sikhi Sidak, seeks action against Devgn and the film’s director Ashwini Dhir for hurting religious sentiments of the Sikh community and defaming it.

Pakistan Army chief to visit Russia next week

Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is scheduled to visit Russia next week to give a push to Islamabad’s efforts to improve relations with Moscow ahead of the pull out of foreign troops from Afghanistan.

Kayani during his October 3-6 visit will hold talks with Russia’s top military leadership and is expected to meet some political leaders, defence sources said yesterday.

It is expected that he will also meet President Vladimir Putin, who recently called off a scheduled visit to Pakistan.

16 Taliban killed in Afghanistan

At least 16 Taliban militants have been killed in “clean-up” operations in Afghanistan, the interior ministry said Sunday.

Afghan police, army and personnel from the NATO-led coalition forces launched joint operations in Sar-e-Pul, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Wardak, Logar, Herat, Farah, Ghor and Helmand provinces, Xinhua reported.

A total of 22 Taliban militants were arrested.

The ministry did not say if there were any casualties among the security forces.

The Taliban did not make any comment.

Kingfisher shuts down operation in Himachal

While Himachal Pradesh is planning to have an international airport, two of the three domestic airports here have been left idle without any flights after Kingfisher Airlines stopped its operation to Delhi-Kullu and Delhi-Shimla sector earlier this month without any notice. Sources yesterday confirmed that the ground handling staff in Bhuntar and Shimla airports have received notices from the airline with regard to suspended operations and non-requirement of their services. The only other operator, Air India has already suspended its operations since July this year.
