Govt clears SC/ST quota proposal for promotion in state jobs

The government today cleared a proposal that would allow it to provide reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in promotion in state jobs.

The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the proposal for making provisions for quotas for SC/STs in promotions in government jobs.

The Cabinet nod clears the decks for introduction of a Constitution Amendment Bill in the ongoing session of Parliament, which has been a long-standing demand of all parties, barring the Samajwati Party.

EC begins groundwork for polls in five states

The Election Commission has begun the spadework for Assembly Elections in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, scheduled early next year, an official said here on Tuesday.

“The Commission might hold the Assembly polls due in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh separately. After conducting the elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, Assembly polls might be hold in the three northeastern states,” an Election Commission official said on condition of anonymity.

Fat, not sugar, contributes to the more common Type-2 diabetes, said a leading scientist of the Visva Bharati University here Tuesday

“Diabetes exists in two forms, Type-1 and Type-2. Ninety-six to ninety-seven percent of patients exhibit the latter type,” explained Samir Bhattacharya, while speaking at the Frontiers of Science conference organised by the Centre for Natural Sciences and Philosophy and the Critical Issues Forum, Kolkata.

BSP welcomes Cabinet nod for promotion quota

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval to a Bill to give Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes reservation in job promotion.

The BSP chief, talking to reporters here, appealed to the main opposition party, Bharatiya Janata Party, to let the Bill be passed in this session, which ends on September 7.

SP against promotion quota bill, BJP wants amendment

Soon after the union cabinet Tuesday approved a constitutional amendment bill for reservation in job promotions to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the Samajwadi Party said it will not let the bill pass in parliament.

The party, which has taken a stand against the bill, accused the government of taking a politically motivated decision.

“We are against the bill. It is unconstitutional,” Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ram Gopal Yadav said.

“The Supreme Court has quashed it. Still the government wants to bring the bill because it is politically motivated,” Yadav told reporters here.

Bihar politicians slam Uddhav Thackeray

Bihar’s political leaders, cutting across party lines, Tuesday slammed Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray for his remarks that a permit system should be implemented for Biharis wanting to live in Mumbai.

Leaders of ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and Congress have countered Thackeray and demanded action against him.

Thackeray, the Shiv Sena executive president, made the comments Tuesday in the party mouthpiece Saamana.

Govt. strives to deprive poor students: YSRCP

Considering the fee reimbursement as an investment, YSR Congress party demanded that the government pay total fee of the students. Government’s announcement that the total fee of only those students who got rank within 10000 would be paid, tantamount to deprive poor students from attaining higher education.

Speaking to media at party head office Lotus Pound, YSR congress party spokesman Mr. G Ramchander Rao told that the government has no future strategy nor it is in favour of sustaining existing welfare schemes.

Police fail to stop theft and robbery cases

In one such incident Panjagutta division of the city police has arrested 3 young thieves besides a minor. Panjagutta police arrested Sheikh Nazeer, Syed Jabbar and Mohammed Shoeb besides a minor thief and seized jewellery worth 9 lakh 50 thousand from their possession.

Heavy downpour in the State yesterday

Four persons were swept away in the rainwater in Warangal district. Rail track was damaged in many areas of Warangal and Khammam. South Central Railway cancelled 9 trains. It also diverted the routs of many trains. All the 20 doors of Tungabhadra Dam have been opened.

Many persons have been shifted to safe places. Eleven thousand acres of crops have been damaged.

Police, protesters clash in Ranchi; one killed

A bystander was killed and 12 others were injured when police and protesting workers of the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric-JVM) clashed Tuesday, prompting Chief Minister Arjun Munda to order a judicial probe into the incident.

“A by-stander died by accident under a vehicle,” Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Saket Kumar Singh, who was present during the violence said.

Researchers from the New York University found that children showing physical changes due to being obese, such as raised blood pressure, higher levels of bad cholesterol and resistance to the blood sugar controlling hormone, insulin, had poorer scores on thinking tests.

Third tiger cub at Patna zoo also dead

All three tiger cubs born at the Patna Zoological Park July 31 have died within a week, succumbing to infection, a zoo official said Tuesday.

The last of the three cubs died late Monday and the death came as a huge blow to the captive breeding of tigers. The first cub died Aug 28 and the second Sep 2, a zoo official said.

Zoo director Abhay Kumar said it was unfortunate that all three tiger cubs died despite the best possible treatment.

Government notification permitting smoking scenes in films soon

The government Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it would shortly issue a notification to permit smoking scenes in films with a scroll carrying statutory warning that smoking is injurious to health.

The apex court bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi was told that the new notification would mandate that the films showing smoking scene run a scroll that smoking was injurious right at the start of the film, soon after the interval and during the course of the scene showing smoking.
