Bandh in six Northeast states today

The North East Students Organisation (NESO), the apex student body of the region, has called a 12-hour bandh in all states of the region, except Assam, on Thursday to protest against influx of migrant labourers and others into the region from other states.

There will be bandhs in other states while a central rally would be held in Guwahati on Thursday to be participated by constituent student organisations of all the NE states, NESO chairman Dr Samujjal Bhattachrjya said.

Telangana issue will be decided this month: KCR

TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday expressed confidence that the separate Telangana issue will be decided this month.

“Telangana issue will be decided this month. There need not be any doubts over this,” Rao, a Lok Sabha member, told reporters here before leaving for New Delhi to attend Parliament session.

He indicated that there are chances of talks over the contentious issue during his stay in Delhi.

The TRS president had been saying for long that he has got “signals” and “assurance” over formation of the separate state from the Central leaders in Delhi.

Vice-Principal beats students on Teachers Day

The Vice-Principal of a reputed missionary school here in Hooghly district was on Wednesday arrested for caning seven students of the school, police sources said.

The students of class IV of Don Bosco school were decorating their class room for the Teachers Day celebration and were playing with foam spray when vice-principal Subir Mondal entered the classroom, the sources said.

Mondal immediately snatched the foam spray from the students and started beating the students with a cane. Seven students were injured in the caning, they said.

Sleep disorders are early signs of Alzheimer’s

A pattern of disturbed sleep could be an early warning sign of Alzheimer’s disease, suggest scientists.

Working on a mouse model, researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, found that when the first signs of Alzheimer’s plaques appear in the brain, the normal sleep-wake cycle is significantly disrupted.

Income Tax Refunds scam unearthed

Central Crime Station of the police unearthed income tax refunds scam and arrested six tax consultants and an outsourcing employee of income tax department.

Dy. Commissioner of Police, Detective Department, Mr. P. John Victor told that Mr. Shaik Mohammed Jehangir had. contacts for five years with the outsourced income tax employee Ms. Anji Rani. Taking advantage of these contacts, Mr. Jehangir filed fake returns of income tax and got them attested by Ms. Anji Rani for the period from 2010 to 2012 by entering fake data.

Man kills wife and three children, then himself

Believing that he and his family were victims of black magic, a 30-year-old man here strangled to death his wife and daughter and then set his two other children afire before killing himself early Thursday, police said.

The shocking incident took place around 5.30 a.m. in Kothrud locality. Parshuram Mallappa Kalkatti, a labourer from Karnataka, overpowered and strangulated his wife Gayatri, 30, and daughter Payal, 7, as they slept in their hutment.

115 killed in Syria: Report

An anti-government organisation has claimed the Syrian military Wednesday killed at least 115 people in a massacre in Aleppo province.

The Syrian Local Coordination Committees, an umbrella organisation of 14 anti-government groups, said 25 of those killed were children.

Around 5,000 people died in Syria’s civil war in August, making it the deadliest month since violence started almost 18 months ago, according to activist groups.

More than 26,000 people have died in the conflict that started in March 2011.

‘India-China militaries should deepen their defence ties’

China should deepen its defence ties with India, as the agreement reached by the two countries to resume joint military exercises still represented a “low level of cooperation,” official media said today.

Defence Minister Gen Liang Guanglie’s talks with his Indian counterpart A K Antony yesterday shows an important effort that China made to increase mutual trust and reduce strategic errors, said Ruan Zongze, deputy director of the China Institute of International Studies.

SBI cuts fixed deposit rates by 0.5-1 per cent

State Bank of India today announced a cut of up to 1 per cent in interest rate for fixed deposits across maturities, a development which may prompt other banks to follow suit.

“The new rates would be effective from September 7,” State Bank of India, the country’s largest bank said in a statement.

When asked about the reduction, SBI Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer Diwakar Gupta said, “The bank has taken decision to cut interest rates on term deposits as liquidity is comfortable.”

The decision to cut fixed deposit rates would help the bank improve margins, he said.

State Bank of Hyderabad adopts 15 tigers at zoo

The State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) has come forward to adopt 15 tigers in the Nehru Zoological Park on Wednesday. Curator of the zoo, A Shankaran said that the SBH made a donation of Rs 15 lakh to the zoo fund to this effect. According to zoo officials, the rate of adoption of each tiger in Rs 1 lakh per year. The funds received from SBH will be used for food, healthcare and sanitation such as cleaning of cages and enclosures.

NE people returning to AP

People from the Northeast, who fled the city last month, fearing for their life after threatening SMS, were gradually returning. According to sources here today, most of the employers have come forward to take them back treating their absence as paid leave. To meet the extra rush, Railways were running special trains. from Guwahati and people were coming back as the situation had completely returned to normal, according to Norheast Forum. A majority of those who left the city were employed as security guards in IT companies located in Cyberabadd here.

ASP disappears, new twist to IPS officers row

The East Godavari IPS officers row has taken a new twist today with the controversial Rampachodavaram ASP Naveen Kumar suddenly disappearing from his brother’s house and family members alleging that he was kidnapped by the Superintendent of Police.

Though the government has suspended him for violation of service rules, technically he was still on duty as the suspension orders are yet to be served on him. The ASP along with his family members came to Rajahmundry around noon to his elder brother’s’house.

Minister warns striking junior doctors of stern action

Medical Education Minister Kondru Murali Mohan on Wednesday warned the striking junior doctors of stern action if they do not call off their agitation immediately.

Talking to media persons at the Government Hospital in Kurnool, Kondru Murali Mohan accused the junior doctors of resorting to blackmail tactics in order to get their demands approved by the State Government. However, he warned that the government would not relent and initiate stern action against them if strike was not called off.

Wakf Board finalises SC lawyers to fight Manikonda case

The AP State Wakf Board has finalized a four-tier system of lawyers who would be challenging the Supreme Court injunction on AP high court order declaring Manikonda Jagir as wakf land. “We have finalized a set of lawyers and they are studying the counter prepared by board lawyer Shafeeq Rahman Mahajir. Mahajir and another board lawyer Masood Khan will be visiting Delhi soon to give a final shape to the counter and thrash out other legal details with the senior counsels there,” board chairman Syed Ghulam Afzal Biyabani.

IR extends MLAs authorization to issue income certificate

Indian Railways has extended the authority conferred on Members of Legislative Assemblies of States and Union Territories for issue of Income Certificates for the purpose of securing Izzat Monthly Season Tickets (Izzat MST) for persons working in unorganized sectors by one more year — upto September 30, 2013. AP gets Saakshar Bharat Award

Andhra Pradesh Literacy Mission Authority (APSLMA) has secured three national-level awards for successfully implementing the Saakshar Bharat Programme in the state.

Man rapes daughter

In a horrifying incident, a man allegedly doused his 13-year-old daughter with kerosene and set her afire after raping her at a local slum. The victim, who was yesterday admitted to the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Smruti Hospital in critical condition, accused Nage Rao of sexually assaulting her for the past about 20 days after her mother Parvati left home with two other kids following repeated quarrels with her husband.
