10 yrs’ RI in minor rape case

A special court here has sentenced a man to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment on the charge of raping a minor and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him.

In his verdict delivered yesterday, Judge S Saluja convicted Lachhuram Bheel for sexually assaulting the girl
after threatening to kill her at Baseda village on May 10, 2010.

Shabbir resents Jagan family doubts on YSR death

Former minister Shabbir Ali has taken serious exception to the doubts expressed by YSRCP Chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s family on the death of former chief minister Dr YSR.

Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan here on Friday, Shabbir Ali alleged that the doubts expressed by the Jagan’s family after two years was only to evoke sympathy and get political benefits in the present bye-elections. Shabbir Ali strongly suspected that Jagan and Brahmananda Reddy might have played a role in the death of Dr YSR.

T’ Lawyers agitate for arrest of CBi Judge

Telangana lawyers on Friday launched an agitation at the High Court, demanding immediate arrest of the CBI First Additional Court Judge Pattabhi Rama Rao, who was suspended by the High Court.

It was alleged that Pattabhi Rama Rao has received Rs 5 crores as bribe from the former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardana Reddy to grant him bail. Pattabhi Rama Rao granted bail to Gali on May 12. However, the former mining baron continued to be in jail in Karnataka as he was arrested there in connection with another case.

YSR tried to sell his house to clear debts in 2004 : Naidu

TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu has said that late Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had written a letter to him in 2004 for permission to sell his house to clear his debts and questioned how he had earned thousands of crores of rupees within a few years from that stage.

Addressing election meetings in the Potti Sriramulu Nellore district on Friday, Naidu said that when YSR sought permission to sell his house, he could not give it as it was constructed on government land. He said that he wrote back stating that YSR could pay for the land and then sell his house.

Bharati not permitted to meet Jagan in Jail

YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s wife Bharati had a bitter experience at the Chanchalguda jail here when she came to visit her husband on Friday.

Bharati came to the jail along with her relatives to meet Jagan in the afternoon. However, as the time given for the relatives to meet the prisoners in ‘Mulakhat’ ended, she was not allowed to meet her husband by the jail authorities.

Prosecutors ‘tarring’ Rajat Gupta: US judge

A US federal court judge trying Rajat Gupta on insider trading charges has observed that prosecutors were “tarring” the former Indian-American managing director of McKinsey & Co. with an unrelated separate scheme.

“That’s the problem,” US District Judge Jed Rakoff said when Gupta’s lawyer, Gary Naftalis, argued in a hearing Friday outside the jury’s presence that prosecutors were attempting to retry the case of convicted hedge fund billionaire Rajaratnam to get his client.

India to launch 16 new nuclear reactors

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) will launch 16 reactors at an outlay of Rs.2.3 trillion ($40 billion) during the 12th Plan period (2012-17), a top official of the atomic power operator said.

“We have to launch eight 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) and eight light water reactors (LWRs) involving a total outlay of Rs.230,000 crore (Rs.2.3 trillion). The LWRs will be from foreign companies,” S.K. Jain, who retired Thursday as NPCIL chairman and managing director, told IANS in an interview.

No further appeal against Bhagavad Gita translation

Russian prosecutors have decided against taking forward their case seeking a ban on a translated version of Bhagavad Gita, bringing down the curtains on the sensitive issue that had enraged Hindus globally and even threatened to strain Russia’s ties with India.

State prosecutors in the Siberian city of Tomsk will not challenge a lower court decision to refuse to declare the translation of the Hindu scripture as “extremist”, RAPSI legal news agency reported.

Ramdev, Hazare to fast against corruption

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and social activist Anna Hazare will Sunday sit in the capital on a day-long fast against corruption and black money stashed away by Indians abroad.

“The protest will take place simultaneously in the capital at Jantar Mantar, in all state capitals and in 650 districts across the country,” Ramdev said at a press conference here.

Ramdev said he would be joined by Hazare during his day-long hunger strike.

Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Kiran Bedi will also participate in the protest.

CBI court dismisses Jagan’s bail petition

Close friends, fans and fellow artists will remember Maqbool Fida Husain, one of India’s greatest contemporary artists, on his first death anniversary June 9 with a commemorative programme, “Remembering Husain”, at the India International Centre (IIC) in the capital.

The artist died in exile in London. He was 96.

CBI seeks HC permission to arrest tainted judge

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday moved a petition in the High Court seeking permission to arrest First Additional CBI Judge T Pattabhi Ramarao, who granted bail to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy in an illegal mining case, by allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 crore.

The agency has noticed that Rs 10 crore has changed hands and at least four people were involved in the alleged hawala operations. The agency also booked the judge’s son and others involved in this connection.

BJP accuses KCR of cheating people on Telangana issue

Woman injured after shot at by husband

A woman got injured after she was shot at by her husband, who demanded a son from her after
three daughters, police said.

The incident took place in Khajrana area here late last night, they said today.

The accused Bunti Narvale, a history-sheeter and wanted by police, fled from the spot after firing, Khajarana
Thana Incharge Kulwant Singh told PTI.

Injured Priti, who received a bullet on her hand, was admitted to local hospital, whose condition was stable, Singh said.

Priti had come to stay at her brother’s place as her husband used to quarrel with frequently, he added.

CBI books two diamond export companies for fraud

The CBI has booked two diamond export companies here for allegedly availing Rs 63 crore loan from Indian Overseas Bank on the basis of fraudulent documents and carried out searches at the residence of their executives.

HC asks Centre and UP to file reply on detention of Kashmiri youths by ATS

The Allahabad High Court today asked the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government to file their replies on a petition challenging the detention of two Kashmiri youths who were picked up by the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the state police while travelling by train last week.

A division bench comprising Justice Dharnidhar Jha and Justice Ramesh Sinha directed the Centre and the state to file
their counter affidavits within a month and ordered that the matter be listed for further hearing after the court reopens after summer vacation on July 2.

Chopper carrying Tata Steel officials makes emergency landing

A Tata Steel helicopter carrying some company officials made an emergency landing at Situlata village in Seraikela-Kharswan district due to bad weather this evening, company sources said.

The helicopter carrying personal executive officer to the Tata Steel managing director H M Nerurkar, Arun Mishra and
four others including crew members made the emergency landing at a village about 50 km from here but all are safe, said Prabhat Sharma, Head of Corporate Affairs of Tata Steel.

Company officials have left for the spot to bring them back by road, the sources added.

Pak doctor’s lawyers appeal against his conviction

A group of lawyers representing Pakistani doctor Shakeel Afridi, sentenced to a 33-year jail term after he helped the CIA track Osama bin Laden, appealed against his conviction today.

Idress Kamal, the head of an anti-militancy civil society group that has taken up Afridi’s case, said an appeal had been filed in a court in Peshawar against the doctor’s conviction.

The appeal also challenges the sentence and charges levelled against Afridi, he said.

After a tense seven month stand-off, Pakistan has allowed two US military liaison officers back on its turf, a move largely seen as a small but “significant” sign of cooperation.

Attack on US base kills 14 in Afghanistan: NATO

A suicide truck bomber attacked a US-run base today, sparking clashes that killed up to 14 people in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border, officials said.

NATO’s US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said none of its personnel was killed in the attack in
Khost province, a Taliban flashpoint that borders Pakistan.

The Taliban militia, which is leading a 10-year insurgency against foreign troops and the Kabul government, claimed

Mecca Masjid blast accused Bharat Bhai granted bail

A city court on Friday granted bail to Bharath Mohanlal Rateswar alias Bharat Bhai, an accused in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case, however, his remand will continue in connection with the Ajmer blast case.

The special court for National Investigation Agency (NIA) granted bail to Bharat Bhai after the agency, which is probing the case failed to file charge-sheet against him even after the expiry of 180 days of remand period.
