Close on the heals of veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K.Advani slamming the feuding factions within the party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has pulled up Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the way he forced the exit of Sanjay Joshi from the BJP’s national executive last week.

In an article written by Devendra Swaroop in the RSS mouthpiece Panchjanaya, Modi has been asked to think over his style of functioning and the strength of the party organisation.

Mubarak gets life in prison for role in murder of protesters

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was today sentenced to life in prison after a court here found him guilty of complicity in the killing of protesters during a popular uprising against his 30-year rule last year.

84-year-old ailing former dictator, who was wheeled into the courtroom, got life imprisonment along with his former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly.

Six former police commanders were acquitted by the court, which also dropped corruption charges against Mubarak’s two sons Alaa and Gamal.

YSRC flays Cong. anti-farmer policies

YSR Congress on Saturday flayed the anti-farmer polices of the State government and demanded that the Congress and TDP should concentrate on the welfare of farmers and other sections instead of incessantly carrying out campaign against YS Jaganmohan Reddy with mala fide intentions.

Petrol price cut by Rs.2.02 a litre in Delhi

State-owned Indian Oil Corp Saturday said it will reduce petrol price by Rs.2.02 a litre, including state levies, in Delhi from midnight Saturday.

Petrol became dearer by Rs.7.54 a litre in the capital after a rate revision May 23.

Man kills wife, sister-in-law in Haryana

Two middle-aged women lost their lives Saturday in Haryana’s Jhajjar town after the husband of one of them hit them with an iron rod in a fit of rage, said the police.

Police later arrested Narender of Qilla Mohalla of Jhajjar town, 350 km from Chandigarh, on charges of murdering his wife Sudesh, 42, and sister-in-law Mukesh, 45.

Family members told the police that Narender attacked the two women with an iron rod in a fit of anger after his wife argued with him over his drinking habits.

Petrol prices cut by Rs 2 per litre with effect from midnight tonight.

Petrol price will be cut by Rs 2 per litre with effect from midnight tonight.

State-owned oil firms will reduce petrol price by Rs 1.68 per litre, excluding taxes. After including 20 per cent VAT, the cut in Delhi comes to Rs 2 per litre, industry sources said.

Petrol after last week’s steepest ever hike of Rs 7.54 a litre costs Rs 73.18 per litre in Delhi.

After the reduction, it will cost Rs 71.18 a litre.‎

3 day Urs of Shah Jahan in Taj from June 16

The Urs of Shah Jahan, who built world famous monument of Taj Mahal in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, will be held here from June 16 to 18. The Urs will take place in Taj premises and the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) had already started preparations for the event, according to assistant conservator of Taj Mahal Munnawar Ali. The entry of the visitors will be free on those three days and they can see the original graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz during Urs period.

AP minister denies role in cash-for-bail scam

Andhra Pradesh Law Minister Erasu Prathap Reddy Saturday denied any role in the cash-for-bail scam which has rocked the judiciary.

The minister rubbished allegations that he facilitated a deal between CBI judge Pattabhirama Rao and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy for securing bail to the latter in an illegal mining case.

Pratap Reddy, a relative of Janardhana Reddy, said he was ready to face any probe and offered to retire from politics if he was found guilty of corruption.

Man demands additional dowry from wife of 25 years

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on charges of harassing his wife 25 years after marriage for an additional dowry of Rs ten lakh, police said today.

Kalanjiam had allegedly threatened his wife two days ago that he would upload their intimate scenes through You Tube/ internet if her family did not pay up, police said.

When they got married, he was given as dowry gold ornaments weighing 42 sovereigns and some cash, police said.

His wife had been staying with her parents for the past few years as he allegedly beat her and had illicit relationships with other women, police said.

Shah Rukh not attending IIFA this year

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is set to give IIFA ceremony in Singapore a miss this year as he will be busy shooting for Yash Chopra’s untitled next.

The actor, who attended the ceremony last year, will be leaving for London this weekend for the shooting where he will be joined by his family and children Aryan and Suhana.

“The rumours of Shah Rukh and his family being at IIFA has got many of his fans excited but this is to clarify to everyone that Shah Rukh is in London shooting for Yash Chopra,” his representative said.

Slippers hurled at Vanisri during campaign of Congress candidate

Erstwhile film actress Vanisri had a bitter experience at Nellore where she was campaigning for Congress candidate T. Subbarami Reddy. Vanisri made some offensive remarks against women on which infuriated women hurled slippers on her.

Court sends Jagan to CBI custody for five days

In another setback to MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in disproportionate assets case, the Andhra Pradesh High Court Saturday sent him to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody for five days.

The high court also dismissed Jagan’s quash petition, seeking orders to declare his arrest illegal.

Though the CBI sought Jagan’s custody for 10 days, the court sent him to the probe agency’s custody for five days from June 3.

Justice B. Chandra Kumar, who had reserved his orders Friday after hearing arguments from both the sides, pronounced it after 3.30 p.m. Saturday.

Gold prices breached Rs 30,000 mark for the first time today on heavy buying by stockists and retailers amid strong overseas trend, triggered by global financial uncertainty which has increased the metal’s appeal
as a safe investment haven.

Gold shot up by a hefty Rs 960 to touch a record high of Rs 30,300 per 10 grams in line with global rally where it jumped the most in ten months.

Traders said gold, both of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity, recorded the biggest single day gain of Rs 960 each to Rs 30,300 and Rs 30,160 per 10 grams, respectively.

Spl. prayers offered after Friday prayers for Abdul Qadeer’s release

Khateebs of various mosques in the city offered special prayers after Friday prayers for the release of ex-constable Mohammad Abdul Qadeer. Before Friday prayers Khateeb of Masjid Guttala Begumpet Madhapur Mr. Mumtaz Ahmed explained the details of Abdul Qadeer’s arrest and said that even after his sentence is over he is not being released. Presently he is extremely ill, he said.

Akhilesh orders probe against former UP power minister

Acting on the recommendation of state Lokayukta Justice N.K. Mehrotra, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered a probe against BSP supremo Mayawati’s close aide former state power minister Ramveer Upadhyay, officials here said Saturday.

The investigation, ordered late Friday, would look into the allegations of misuse of power by Upadhyay and disproportionate assets acquired by him and his family members, besides several other irregularities during his five-year tenure in the previous government, informed sources told IANS.

Legislator shot at in Delhi

An independent Delhi legislator, Bharat Singh, was shot at in the Najafgarh area by unidentified attackers Saturday morning, police said.

According to police, Singh, a legislator from Najafgarh, was shot by unidentified gunmen at around 8.30 a.m.

He was taken to the nearby Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Police are suspecting it to be a case of personal enmity and are investigating.

Singh is the brother of MCD councillor Kishen Pahalwan against whom several criminal cases are pending.

BJP to launch countrywide stir from June 7

BJP on Friday announced it will hold a fortnight-long agitation across the country from June 7 which will culminate in a court arrest programme on June 22 to protest steep hike in petrol prices, alleged attack on the country’s federal structure by the Centre and price rise.

In a statement issued, BJP General Secretary Ananth Kumar said the decision to launch a ‘Jan Sangharsh Abhiyan’ (Public Struggle Campaign) was taken at a meeting of office-bearers on Thursday chaired by Party President Nitin Gadkari.

Polling underway for crucial Kerala bypoll

Voting for the Assembly by-election from Neyyattinkara segment near the Kerala capital got underway Saturday morning on a brisk note.

Candidates of the ruling Congress-led UDF, CPI(M)-led LDF and BJP are engaged in three-cornered fight in the rural constituency, located about 15 km south-east of the capital.

According to official sources, impressive voter turnout was reported from most parts of the rural segment in the initial hours itself.

A total of 1.6 lakh voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the polls.
