Relative held for extortion call

A man was arrested here Saturday for trying to extort money from a property dealer-cum-relative by pretending to be a don based in the Gulf, police said.

Ashish Thapar, a resident of DLF Phase 5 here, got a telephone call May 17 purportedly from Dubai demanding Rs.4 crore. Thapar was told to pay up or get killed.

Sushant Lok police station chief Gaurav Fhogat told reporters that police tapped some mobile telephones that led them to Gaurav Sahagal, who had reportedly made the extortion call.

Sahagal was a relative of the victim and was also a property dealer, police said.

Israeli embassy car blast needs probe abroad, court told

Delhi Police Saturday moved an application in a court here saying that the probe in the Feb 13 Israeli embassy car bomb attack has gone international and they needed three months to conclude the investigation, sources said.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav while granting more time to Delhi Police said this was for the first time that the name of any country has appeared in a police application.

13,000 women own 20,000 companies in UAE

The number of Emirati businesswomen has crossed 13,000 who together control over 20,000 business establishments in the country, an official said.

According to the chairperson of the Emirates Business Women Council and of the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council Eng, Fatima Al Jaber, the women could prove their capability for economic participation as a result of the economic renaissance in the country.

Unprecedented security was made at the CBI main office in Kothi on Saturday.
Police have taken the extraordinary precaution as they expect that the YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy might be brought here for questioning, should the CBI gets his custody as it sought in its petition in the High Court.

The CBI has done a commendable job in unearthing the ‘cash-for-bail’ scandal in which a Judge of the CBI court T R Pattabhirama Rao, his son, and a minister from Rayalaseema region were allegedly involved, along with two others, to bail out mining baron and former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, in the OMC scam. The Chief Justice and other Judges of the State High Court also deserve high praise for ordering immediate suspension the tainted CBI judge.

CBI court issues summons to Acharya, Subrahmanyam in Emaar case

The CBI court on Saturday issued summons to IAS officers L V Subrahmanyam and B P Acharya in connection with their alleged role in Emaar scam.

The special court while issuing summons to both the bureaucrats, asked them to appear before the court on June 18. As BP Acharya, who arrested by the CBI, is presently lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail, the court has issued Prisoner Transit Warrant against him and directed the jail authorities to produce him in the court on June 18.

BJP accuses TRS of mounting pressure on TP-JAC

Addressing an election rally for YSR Congress party in Kadapa district, Vivekananda Reddy said that the people of State have certain doubts over the helicopter crash which killed Rajasekhara Reddy. He said that both the State and Central Governments have the responsibility to clear doubts over chopper crash. “There are certain unanswered questions regarding YSR’s death and the governments have to clear them,” he said.

Girls out-performed boys in the Engineering Common Entrance Test – 2012 whose results were released here on Saturday.

The ECET – 2012 was conducted on May 26 by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada. Releasing the results, ECET Convenor Prof G Tulasi Ramdas informed that out of 32,937 candidates who registered for the test, 29,391 candidates qualified in the ECET taking a total pass percentage to 89.23.

Two dead, curfew in riot-hit Mathura district

An indefinite curfew continued Saturday in Kosi Kalan town along the Delhi-Agra highway here after communal violence a day earlier left two people dead in widespread rioting.

The small Uttar Pradesh town wore a ghostly look as residents remained indoors, witnesses and police sources said. Few people got off from trains Saturday at the Kosi station in Mathura district.

The more than a dozen people injured in the riots were warded in hospitals in Mathura and Agra towns and in Faridabad in neighbouring Haryana, officials said.

Man kills two minor daughters in Uttar Pradesh

A man in Uttar Pradesh killed his two minor daughters as he was upset over his wife not giving birth to a son, police said Saturday.

Anil, a resident of Asandra region, killed four-year-old Muskaan and two-year-old Khushi Friday and dumped their bodies in a river in Barabanki district, 29 km from the state capital. He is absconding.

The bodies were discovered by villagers Saturday.

Superintendent of Police Barabanki D.K. Rai told IANS that Anil was angry with his wife Sangeeta as she had given birth to three daughters.

BJP has made Karnataka the most corrupt state: Rahul Gandhi

On a day when a ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator was convicted and jailed in a bribery case, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Saturday charged the BJP with making Karnataka the most corrupt state in the country.

“There is no other state more corrupt than the BJP-ruled Karnataka. At a time when half the state is reeling under drought, the ruling party’s leaders are busy fighting among themselves,” Gandhi said at a Youth Congress convention here, about 400 km from Bangalore.

RSS mouthpiece questions Narendra Modi’s style of functioning
