After tigress, Priyanka adopts lioness

After tigress Durga, Bollywood’s ‘junglee billi’ Priyanka Chopra has adopted lioness Sundari of Ranchi’s Birsa Munda zoo, an official said Saturday.

“We have received a cheque of Rs.200,000 from Priyanka Chopra foundation. She has adopted lioness Sundari,” a zoo official told IANS.

The contract will last till April 30, 2013. The official said Priyanka had adopted tigress Durga last year. That contract ended April 30.

Last year the Ranchi zoo introduced a scheme for adoption of animals. One can adopt any animal for a period of one year to 11 years.

Parineeti, Arjun say acting schools are important

“Ishaqzaade” co-stars Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor feel training at an acting school can be extremely helpful. While Parineeti says it’s too late to join one now, Arjun says training helps you face failure and eggs you on.

“It would have been nice if I would have got a platform to learn acting. Now there is no time. But we do attend workshops before we start shooting,” the actress said on the sidelines of an event at Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods International here.

Naseer slashes fee for ‘Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein’?

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah is said to have been so impressed with the script of “Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein”, involving a bunch of theatre actors, that he agreed to be part of it at a nominal price.

Debutant director Manish Srivastav was keen on casting Naseer in a lead role and had even written the script keeping him in mind. When he approached the actor, he was humbled and decided to come on board for a very small amount, said a source.

He was even more delighted that majority of the a cast include theatre actors.

Shruti heads for Madonna’s live concert

Actress Shruti Seth can’t wait to see her lifelong dream come true as she gears up to watch singer Madonna live in concert in Abu Dhabi.

“Heading to Dubai tomorrow to fulfil another life dream. Watching Madonna LIVE IN CONCERT in Abu Dhabi on the 4th! Yayyyyy!!!” tweeted Shruti.

The actress is a trained singer herself.

CBI takes Jagan’s custody, begins questioning

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Sunday began questioning jailed YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in the illegal assets case.

The questioning began at the officer’s mess in the office of director general of prisons, adjoining Chanchalguda Central Jail, where Jagan is lodged since May 28.

The Kadapa MP, emerged from the jail gate around 10.30 a.m. With his trademark smile, he greeted mediapersons with folded hands before the CBI officials led him into the waiting vehicle. Clad in white shirt, he was clean shaven and looked fresh.

BJP’s poser to Cong on T state issue

The Bharatiya Janata Party National Spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Prakash Javadekar has asked the Congress party as to what it will lose if separate Telangana state was formed.

Speaking at a seminar organized by the party youth wing at Geesukonda mandal on Saturday, Javadekar said that they had carved out three states, and they were being developed now. Introducing a private bill on separate Telangana in the Rajya Sabha, the BJP had got the issue discussed for five hours in the house.

Fire at World Trade Center in New York

A fire broke out at the One World Trade Center tower in New York Saturday but firefighters managed to put it out in about an hour, media reports said Sunday.

“The fire was on the 89th, 90th and 91st floors, and our job was to extinguish that,” CBS New York television channel quoted Manhattan firefighting chief Jim Esposito as saying.

He said that luckily the fire was small with some construction materials burning, but firefighters had hard time fetching water 89 floors up, RIA Novosti reported.

Ramdev, Anna hold day-long fast in Delhi

Launching a joint agitation against corruption and black money, yoga guru Ramdev and anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare started a day-long fast at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar Sunday.

The fast has been called to mark one year of Ramdev’s last agitation at Ramlila ground, from where he was arrested in the middle of the night between June 3 and 4 last year.

EC issues notices to all Parakala candidates on poll expenses

The Election Commission has served notices on all the candidates in fray in the Parakala by-election.

The Returning officer has issued notices to TRS candidate Bhikshapati, YSRC candidate Konda Surekha along with six other candidates. The Returning Officer warned that the Commission would initiate action against them if they failed to submit details of election expenditure. (NSS)

Five killed in Pakistan drone strike

At least five suspected militants were killed and three others injured Sunday when a US drone fired missiles at a hideout in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region, Geo News reported.

The strike took place in Wana area of Barmal in South Waziristan along the border with Afghanistan.

The drone fired four missiles at a house, killing five residents and injuring three.

The house was completely razed to the ground.

Sources said there were still four drones hovering over the area.

Promiscuity, divorce, separation epidemic gripping Britons

A senior Church of England bishop has warned that promiscuity, separation and divorce have assumed “epidemic” proportions in Britain.

Rt. Rev Richard Chartres said it as he called for Britain to use the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as an opportunity to reflect and reassess values, Daily Mail reported.

The Rt Rev Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, writing in a Bible Society pamphlet about the origins of the word jubilee, said Britain was now an “enormously different” society compared to 1952, the year of the Queen’s accession to the throne.

Muslim front demands reservation

Andhra Pradesh Muslim Reservation Front has demanded the Central government to implement the Ranganath Mishra Commission report by making necessary constitutional amendments and laws in the Parliament to provide 10 percent separate reservation for backward classes of Muslim.

In a press release, front state president Mohd. Iftekharuddin Ahmed also demanded the State government to include all the 14 existing groups of backward Muslims under BC-E category of the state, into the central list of OBCs, and recommend it to the National Commission for Backward Classes.

Govt okays continuation of LGS posts

The State government has accorded permission for continuation of 70 posts of LGS on outsourcing basis for further period from May 7 up to December 31 this year, subject to following outsourcing guidelines scrupulously.

Earlier, the State government sanctioned 70 posts of LGS on outsourcing basis to OCTOPUS for one year, subject to meeting the expenditure within the budget available under the H.O.A 300-OCS and follow outsourcing guidelines scrupulously. Their tenure expired by May 6.

Man kills two minor daughters in UP

A man in Uttar Pradesh killed his two minor daughters as he was upset over his wife not giving birth to a son, police said Saturday.

Anil, a resident of Asandra region, killed four-year-old Muskaan and two-year-old Khushi Friday and dumped their bodies in a river in Barabanki district, 29 km from the state capital. He is absconding.

The bodies were discovered by villagers Saturday.

Superintendent of Police Barabanki D.K. Rai told IANS that Anil was angry with his wife Sangeeta as she had given birth to three daughters.

China’s non-manufacturing sector slows

The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) of China’s non-manufacturing sector, a key economic indicator, dropped 0.9 percentage points to 55.2 percent in May.

The figure fell for a second consecutive month as the non-manufacturing sector growth slowed, according to China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) Sunday.

A PMI reading above 50 percent indicates expansion from the previous month, while readings below this mark indicate a contraction.
