India seeks US technology to check fake currency notes

India is planning to seek technological cooperation of the US to check the flow of fake Indian currency notes the way Washington does to put a stop of circulation of counterfeit USD.

Impressed by the American technology, which has a database of each counterfeit US dollar – photograph, from where it originated, its route of travel and people behind its circulation – India is all set to ask the US to help it curb the menace, mostly originating from Pakistan.

Jagan faces tough questioning on Day-1 of CBI custody

Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Sunday faced intense questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with regard to the investments into his companies from Mauritius.

Excluding the break of 20 minutes, Jagan faced tough questions in connection with the disproportionate assets case by a team of CBI led by SP Venkatesh. On the first day of five-day custody, the CBI questioned him regarding Rs 124 crore that were invested by six different firms into his companies including Jagathi Publications.

Bangladeshi couple jailed for 37 years

The leader of a banned Islamist outfit in Bangladesh and his wife were Sunday sentenced to 37 years in prison for possessing weapons and bullets.

Zahidul Islam alias Boma Mizan, leader of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, and his wife Halina Begum alias Sharmin, were handed down the punishment by a Dhaka sessions judge, the Daily Star reported on its website.

An explosives expert of the outlawed group, Islam was captured by the Rapid Action Battalion in May 2009 in the city’s Mirpur area.

CBI questions Jagan in illegal wealth case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned jailed YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in the illegal wealth case Sunday, the first day of the five-day custody.

The questioning was on at the officer’s mess in the office of director general of prisons, adjoining Chanchalguda Central Jail, where Jagan is lodged since May 28.

The Kadapa MP, emerged from the jail gate around 10.30 a.m. With his trademark smile, he greeted mediapersons with folded hands before the CBI officials led him into the waiting vehicle. Clad in white shirt, he was clean shaven and looked fresh.

Viveka raises doubts over YSR death

Former Minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy on Saturday expressed doubts over the demise of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in the helicopter crash.

Addressing an election rally of YSR Congress party in Kadapa district, Vivekananda Reddy said that the people of State have certain doubts over the helicopter crash which killed Rajasekhara Reddy.

He said that both the State and Central Governments have the responsibility to clear doubts over chopper crash. ‘There are certain unanswered questions regarding YSR’s death and the governments have to clear them,’ he said.

Heat wave conditions continue, claim 16 lives

The Coastal Andhra districts of Krishna, Guntur And West Godavari continued to reel under oppressive heat wave conditions which have already claimed as many as 16 lives so far in Krishna districts. Official sources said the 16 people died during the last 20 days in Krishna district while as many as 15 others were hospitalized with symptoms of sun stroke.

However, unconfirmed reports said that about 25 people died of sun stroke in the district so far. The day temperature recorded at Gannavaram AirPort today was 45 Celsius (113 F). The minimum temperature was 27.8.C.

Govt to distribute uniform for 56 lakh students in AP

The Andhra Pradesh Government will distribute two pairs of uniform for 56 lakhs students including boys and girls in the state in the current academic years 2012-13. Addressing a press conference here today, Andhra Pradesh Special Chief Secretary, Primary Education and Sarva Sikhya Abhyan, Ms Chandhna Khan said said the government will conduct ‘Education Fortnight’ programme from June 13 to 27 in the districts where elections are not being held.

Govt aims for Rs 50,000 crore pvt investment in airport projects

Buoyed by the Rs 30,000 crore private sector investment in airport projects during 2007-12, the government plans to attract Rs 50,000 crore more in the 12th Plan from private and foreign sources to push some big ticket projects this year itself.

The government estimates that a whopping Rs 67,500 crore would be required to develop and modernise airports during the 12th Plan period, of which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would contribute Rs 17,500 crore.

Suzuki Motorcycle records 21.59 pc sales growth in May

Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) has reported a growth of 21.59 per cent in sales at 36,746 units in May as compared to 30,222 units in the same month a year-ago.

The company has received a “good response” from the market for all its products, including the newly launched Hayate, a mass segment motorcycle, said Mr Atul Gupta, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, SMIPL.

He said the growing customer satisfaction has led to “positive word-of-mouth” in the market and the company will continue to give “the best to its customers”.

Ramdev launches attack against prime minister

Yoga guru Ramdev Sunday launched a direct attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying his claims of honesty were not enough.

“The prime minister said that ‘I am honest’, but the country does not see you as an individual,” said Ramdev, who along with anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare is on a day-long fast at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

“The nation respects you for being an honest individual, but you should also be honest politically. The country sees you as the person holding the highest constitutional post. Your personal honesty is not enough… Keep your cabinet honest,” he said.

Fearing death, Pakistani doctor refuses to eat prison meals

Shakeel Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA track down Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, has refused to eat meals provided by the jail authorities in Peshawar fearing he may be poisoned.

Sources told Geo News, Afridi has refused to eat prison food, and that on his demand, prison authorities have provided him with essential items and cooking utensils so that he could prepare his own food.

Afridi was charged with treason for helping the US track down and kill bin Laden. He has been jailed for 30 years.

CBI courts issue summons to TTD EO

The Principal Special CBI Court here today issued summons to IAS officer and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Executive Officer L V Subrahamanyam in connection with his alleged role in Emaar scam. The CBI court Judge A Pullaiah directed Mr Subrahamnayam to appear in the court on June 18. The court also issued prisoner transit warrant to another IAS officer B P Acharya, who was presently in Chanchalguda Jail here in the emaar case. Five-year-old girl raped, murdered in Pakistan

A five-year-old girl, who went missing for a month in Pakistan’s port city Karachi, has been found raped and murdered – a month after the bodies of five minor girls were found, similarly abducted, raped and then killed.

The girl’s body was found in an under-construction building in Safoora Goth area Saturday. She was tortured, sexually assaulted and then strangled over two weeks ago, Dawn News reported Sunday.

The incident sparked anger among residents, who criticised the police for failing to curb the frequent kidnappings, particularly of minor girls.
