Aarushi case: SC rejects Nupur Talwar’s review plea

The Supreme Court Thursday rejected dentist Nupur Talwar’s petition for review of its earlier order that she and her husband Rajesh be tried for the murder of their daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj. It also turned down the plea for further investigation in the case.

The court, however, allowed Nupur Talwar to move a fresh bail plea as the Allahabad High Court earlier rejected her application. While Nupur Talwar is lodged at the Dasna jail in Ghaziabad, her husband, also a dentist, is out on bail.

Be strong to fight frustration, Mamata tells students

Stating that life was full of challenges, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday urged the student community to develop mental strength to fight frustration.

“Life is full of challenges but I never thought I cannot…I always believe I can. Why should you get frustrated? One should never lose his mental strength. Swami Vivekananda used to say strength is the medicine for all diseases. I urge you all not to get frustrated but develop strength to fight,” said Banerjee.

Pakistani kills ex-girlfriend with hammer

A jobless Pakistani national bludgeoned his Filipina ex-girlfriend to death with a hammer after a split with the 37-year-old mother of his two-year-old daughter, a British court heard.

The court heard that 28-year-old Muhammed Niazi savagely murdered Charito Cruz in September 2011 after discovering she was flirting with an ex-boyfriend on Facebook.

He became depressed and asked police to deport him. But he was turned away and told to contact the Home Office, the Daily Mail reported.

UN observers shot at in Syria: Ban

UN observers trying to reach the scene of the latest reported massacre of Syrian villagers were shot at with small arms, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on the latest situation in Syria, the secretary-general called the new massacre “shocking and sickening”, Xinhua reported.

The unarmed monitors from the UN Supervision Mission in Syria were initially denied access to the massacre site in al-Qubayr village in the country’s northern Hama province, and “were shot at with small arms” while trying to get there, Ban said.

Another explosion in Allahabad, five kids injured

Five children were injured Thursday when a bomb went off in a village in this Uttar Pradesh district — the second blast in about a fortnight, police said. All five are out of danger.

The children, residents of Ghoorpur village, were taking their cattle to graze when they spotted a “ball like object” and picked it up. Minutes later there was a deafening explosion in which Mausam Yadav, Sushma Yadav, Jyoti Yadav, Sashi Yadav and Ajay Singh — all aged between 7 and 12 were injured.

Yemen’s consulate to boost historic ties with Hyderabad

Yemen’s historic ties with Hyderabad are set to get a boost with the Arab nation planning to set up an honorary consulate in the city.

Ausaf Sayeed, India’s ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Yemen, said persons of Yemeni origin in Hyderabad had been representing for a full-fledged Yemeni consulate. However, Yemeni authorities were considering setting up only an honorary consulate.

An eminent person of Yemeni origin will be appointed as an honorary consul, Sayeed told IANS on phone from Sanaa.

Telugu Desam Party leader Shobha Rani has declared Oscar Award for the YSR Congress honorary president Y S Vijayamma “for her acting with glycerin-aided tears at losing her husband in an accident and having her son in jail”.

Talking to the media here on Thursday, she alleged that all the tears of Vijayamma were for winning the by-elections. She said that the good name Vijayamma earned as a good housewife had evaporated after she started supporting her son, who was involved in criminal activities. She posed some questions to Vijayamma and her daughter Sharmila.

Nearly 90 killed in new massacre in Syria

Opposition activists and Syrian government forces clashed with each other in al-Qubayr village in the country’s northern Hama province, leading to the death of at least 86 people, a media report said Thursday.

The toll figure was declared by Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, RIA Novosti reported citing Al Jazeera.

The government, however, said nine people were killed by a “terrorist group”.

Both the opposition and the government have accused the other of being responsible for the deaths.

Woman killed over a goat in Beng

Enraged over a neighbour’s goat nibbling some plants in his garden, a man battered to death the owner of the animal in West Bengal’s south Dinajpur district, police said Thursday.

“Khojamani Das, 42, was beaten to death and her daughter Mamuni was injured by one Bimal Mondal. He was arrested Thursday,” said an officer.

Das’ goat entered Mondal’s garden Tuesday evening and nibbled some of the plants. When Mondal went to Das’ house to complain an altercation ensued, following which the man pounced on the woman, battering her to death, police said.

Digvijaya hits out at Ramdev, asks him to declare his ‘black money’

A day after Congress appeared going soft on Ramdev, party general secretary Digvijay Singh today hit out at the yoga guru asking him to first declare how much black money he possesses before launching a campaign to bring back ill-gotten wealth stashed abroad.

“Everything of whatever I had said about Ramdev and Anna Hazare in past has come out to be true. There is a notice by ED on tax evasion against Ramdev. He (Ramdev) himself is in the dock but keeps talking about bringing black money back. First he should declare how much black money he has,” Singh told reporters.

HC order no setback for me, says Chidambaram

Home minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said that the Madras high court order “is not a setback for me but for the petitioner” even as the government and his party defended him from opposition onslaught.

Government and Congress on Thursday came in defence of home minister P Chidambaram rejecting opposition demands for his resignation in the wake of the Madras high court order that declined to dismiss a petition challenging his election to Lok Sabha in 2009.

Law minister Salman Khurshid ridiculed the BJP for demanding Chidambaram’s resignation over the issue.

APTET exam was conducted on June 1. Candidates can file their objections on the website till June 12. Candidates have to file objections typing their hall ticket no. date of birth and booklet code.

Objections filed by post or through telephone will not be accepted. Final key will be released on June 15.

RIL aims to increase revenue from retail business by as much as six times in 3-4 years and is targeting a ten-fold increase in sales from its shale gas business in the US, Chairman Mukesh Ambani told company shareholders here on Thursday.

Google unveils its new digital mapping service

Google, on Wednesday, unveiled its new digital mapping service in order to be more convenient and convincing for the users.
In a live event , Google demonstrated 3D models of individual buildings and entire cities. The new features were shown off to members of the press on an Apple iPad, rather than an Android-based tablet.

Besides providing 26 million miles of driving directions, Google’s maps will now include imagery of most of the world’s neighborhoods.

Is Microsoft buying Nokia?

Finnish telecom giant Nokia, considered among the most trusted brands in India, is going through a bad patch with its shares at an all-time low, triggering speculation that it may be acquired by Microsoft.

US warns that it has reached ‘limit of patience’ with Pak

In the strongest warning so far to Pakistan, US today said it is reaching the limits of its patience with Islamabad for allowing terrorist safe havens, specially the dreaded Haqqani network.

The warning was sounded by the Defence Secretary Leon Panetta who on an unannounced visit to Afghanistan declared,”It is difficult to achieve peace in Afghanistan as long as there is safe havens for terrorists in Pakistan”.
