500,000 Yemeni kids face death: UNICEF

Sanaa, January 31: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that about half a million of Yemeni children are at risk of dying by the turn of 2012 over severe famine and malnutrition.

“500,000 of these children are at the risk of dying or at the risk of being physically and mentally, cognitive impaired,” UNICEF’s regional director Maria Calivis said in a press conference held in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, to discuss the looming humanitarian crisis.

Ray of hope for Veena-Vani

Hyderabad, January 31: The unending plight of conjoined twins Veena-Vani, who are lodged at the Neeloufer Children’s hospital in the city, may well be over, thanks to the efforts of the hospital.

A team of overseas doctors led by Dr. David of the US visited the hospital on Thursday and held discussions with the hospital authorities over the issue of surgery to separate the twins. The team consisted of five doctors. Dr. David has successfully performed four such surgeries (Craniopagus).

Iran unveils laser-guided ammunition

Tehran, January 31: Islamic Republic of Iran has unveiled smart laser-guided ammunition dubbed “Basir” manufactured by the country’s military experts.

Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi attended the unveiling ceremony in the capital Tehran on Monday.

The general said that it is the first time that such ammunition has been designed and manufactured by Iranian experts in the Defense Industry Organization.

Nearly 50 per cent qualify for TET

Hyderabad, January 31 (INN): Nearly 50 per cent candidates have qualified for the second Teachers Eligibility Test conducted by the School Education Department on January 8.

About 48 per cent of 54,488 candidates who appeared for the exam have qualified for the Paper-I of TET. Similarly nearly 57 per cent of candidates in Paper-II (Maths & Science) have qualified while the pass percentage of Paper – II (Social Studies) was 45 per cent.

14 Countries To Join India In Naval Exercise

New Delhi, January 31: Aiming to strengthen cooperation among the navies in the region, Indian Navy will host 14 of its counterparts from South East Asia, Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region (IOR) for the eighth edition of the Milan exercise in Andaman and Nicobar Islands starting Wednesday.

The five-day exercise will see the participation of Seychelles and Mauritius for the first time in the event where nine countries, including India, will field their warships, Navy officials said here.

Govt issues notification to recruit over 21,000 under DSC

Hyderabad, January 31 (INN): The State Government on Monday issued the notification for the District Selection Committee – 2012.

The government has notified 21,343 vacancies under the DSC – 2012. Of them, 11,602 are for Secondary Grade Teachers, 2,000 for Language Pandit, 365 for Physical Education Teachers, 5,703 School Assistants and 1,673 posts in Municipal Schools.

Rules on statues soon: Manikya Vara Prasad

DL wants cabinet sub-committee on junior docs

Hyderabad, January 31 (INN): Health Minister DL Ravindra Reddy on Monday denied having invited striking junior doctors for the talks.

Talking to reporters after meeting Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the State Secretariat, the minister said that the government did not invite the junior doctors for holding discussions on their demands. However, he said that he has requested the Chief Minster to form a cabinet sub-committee on the issue.

Motkupalli, TD workers held for dharna at Tank Bund

Hyderabad, January 31 (INN): Telugu Desam Telangana Forum leader Motkupalli Narasimhulu and his supporters were arrested by the police when they staged a dharna at Tank Band in protest against the desecration of Dr BR Ambedkar’s statues.

Narasimhulu and TDP activists staged dharna in front of Ambedkar statue on Tankbund and obstructed the traffic. Raising slogans against the state government, the TDP activists demanded that the government take stern action against those responsible for such acts and take steps for not recur of such incidents in future.

Govt to enforce rules for statues’ installation

Hyderabad, January 31 (INN): The State Government has decided to enforce the rules for the erection of statues across the State.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet Sub-Committee which met at the State Secretariat here on Monday. Briefing the media after the meeting, Tourism Minister Vatti Vasanth Kumar said that the government would strictly implement the GO Ms No 55 dated April 18, 2003 which laid down certain rules and regulations for the erection of statues in the State.

Iran to unveil new unmanned aircraft

Tehran, January 31: Iran is set to unveil a new domestically-built unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which possesses high capabilities and versatile features to achieve its objectives.

Mehdi Iraji, the aeronautics engineer in charge of the project, said on Sunday that the new remote-controlled aircraft, called A1, has a maximum flight ceiling of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). It is capable of traveling for at least two hours, and can carry a 5-kilogram (11-pound) payload.

4 accused acquitted in Adnan murder

Mumbai, January 30: A Mumbai sessions court on Monday acquitted the four men arrested for the 2007 murder of teenager Adnan Patrawala.

A fifth accused was a minor at the time of the murder and was tried separately by the Juvenile Justice Board.

Sujit Nair, Ayush Bhat, Rajeev Dharaiya and Amit Kausha were acquitted of charges of extortion, kidnapping and murder as the court felt that evidence collected by Mumbai Police was weak.

The fifth person was not named as he was a minor at the time of the murder.

New Delhi, January 30: Sania Mirza’s semifinal finish in the women’s doubles event at the recently-concluded Australian Open has catapulted her to a career-best ranking of seventh position in the latest WTA Team Rankings, issued today.

Sania jumped from 11th spot to be inside the top-10 in doubles rankings and if she manages to stay in the top 10 till June 21, 2012, she will get a direct entry into the London Olympics. The Hyderabadi girl though slipped in the singles rankings to be placed at 111th spot from 106th position.

Delhi HC blast: Court extends Amir’s judicial custody till Feb 13

New Delhi, January 30: A Delhi court on Monday extended till February 13 the judicial custody of suspected terrorist Amir Abbas Dev who was arrested for his alleged role in the September 7, 2011 blast outside the Delhi High Court premises.

Dev was produced before District Judge H S Sharma during an in-chamber hearing after expiry of his two-week judicial remand.

The court extended the judicial custody of Dev after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said the probe in the case was still going on, court sources said.

No efforts by SIT to probe illegally disposed bodies of riot victims: Sanjiv Bhatt

Ahmedabad, New Delhi 30:Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt today claimed the Supreme Court-appointed SIT has not made any efforts to probe into allegations of bodies of the Naroda Patiya riot victims being illegally disposed of in a well despite specific documents supplied by him.

The allegation was made in a letter written by Bhatt to SIT chairman RK Raghavan.

Bhatt also reiterated his request to get his statement recorded before a magistrate under the provisions of Section 164(1) of CrPC in the missive.

TDP wants house panel on land allotments

Hyderabad, January 30: The Telugu Desam Party on Monday requested Speaker Nadendla Manohar to hasten the constitution of the House Committee to study the land allotments across the State.

Talking to reporters after meeting the Speaker at his chambers, TDP MLA P Keshav said that said that the State Government has promised to constitute a House Committee to study the land allotments and acquisitions across the State. However, almost nine months after the promise was made, the committee has not been formed.

6% DA enhancement for AP employees

Hyderabad, January 30: Andhra Pradesh Cabinet on Monday approved enhancement of dearness allowance (DA) to state government employees by 5.99 percent with retrospective effect from July 1, 2011.

The Cabinet met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy after a gap of more than two months and discussed various issues.

Consequent to the decision, the DA component for the employees will increase from the present 29.96 percent to 35.95 percent, according to Information and Public Relations Minister DK Aruna said.
