Fresh clashes in Syria ‘civil war’

Syria, December 04: Hours of clashes across Syria killed at least four people today and wounded dozens more – including an 11-year-old girl who was struck by stray bullets that flew across the border into Lebanon, officials said.

The most serious violence appeared to be in the town of Talkalakh, where witnesses reported more than six hours of explosions and gunfire.

The town is within walking distance from Lebanon, and at least two people were struck by bullets on the Lebanese side.

Riyadh, December 04: If Saudi women are allowed to drive, it will lead to them having premarital sex, a report to a high-level advisory group claims, according to a rights activist.

The ultra-conservative stance suggests increasing pressure on King Abdullah to retain the kingdom’s male-only driving rules. Waleed Abu Alkhair said the report, by Kamal Subhi, an academic, was sent to the Shura Council, which advises the monarchy. It claims that letting women drive threatens the Saudi tradition of virgin brides.

Anna to fast in jail if not allowed to protest

Ralegan Siddhi, December 04: Anna Hazare on Saturday said he will sit on an idenfinite fast in jail if police does not give permission for his proposed protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan later this month for a strong Lokpal.

“I will sit on a fast in jail. Who can stop me from going on a fast in jail? Nobody can stop in jail,” he told reporters when asked what he will do if police denies permission for holding his fast from December 27 if a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed in the Winter Session of Parliament.

Lt Gen Prakash held guilty, dismissed

Guwahati, December 04: Former military secretary, Lt Gen (retd) Avadesh Prakash was on Saturday held guilty by an Army court here in connection with the infamous Sukna land scam.

Following the verdict, Avadesh Prakash has been dismissed from the service. The dismissal means he will not be entitled to any benefits like pension.

Prakash, whose court martial proceedings in Guwahati got over yesterday, was today held guilty on three counts, including misuse of official position. However, the court gave him benefit of doubt on the fourth count of committing a civil offence.

KCR asks T Cong MLAs to support No Trust Motion

Two including housewife commit suicide

Hyderabad, December 04: A 23-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling fan at her residence in Gosha Mahal.

According to Shahinayatgunj police, the deceased – Naga Chandrika took the extreme step while she was alone at her residence on Friday night. She was married with Govind in 2009 and had an 18-month daughter. However, she was suffering due to bad health and the same is suspected to be the reason that led her to commit suicide. Further investigations into the case are on.

10 killed, 2 injured in Maoist attack

Ranchi, December 04: Ten persons, including eight policemen, were killed and two policemen were injured on Saturday when Maoists attacked the convoy of MP and former Jharkhand Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari, who escaped unhurt in Latehar district.

“Maoists triggered an IED blast and then opened fire on the security vehicle which was following Namdhari’s car at Ladu More in the district,” Director General of Police GS Rath said.

Six policemen, including Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhim Tudu, and two civilians were killed on the spot, Latehar SP B D Sharma said.

Hyderabad, December 04: The CBI on Saturday filed a chargesheet against former Karnataka Tourism minister Gali Janardhana Reddy and four others in the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) case.

“We, today, filed a chargesheet against five accused in the OMC case under different sections of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act,” CBI Joint Director (Hyderabad Zone) V V Lakshmi Narayana told reporters here.

OMC case: Gali’s remand extended till Dec 15

Hyderabad, December 04: The CBI Special Court on Saturday extended the judicial remand of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law BV Srinivasa Reddy, the key accused in the illegal mining case of the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) till December 15.

The court extended the custody after conducting the proceedings through video-conference from the Chanchalguda Central Prison. It was the fifth time that the prison officials produced the accused through video linkage.

BJP adopting double standards on FDI: Digvijay

Ajmer, December 04: Holding BJP responsible for the ongoing impasse in Parliament, Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Saturday said it was adopting double standards on the FDI issue.

“When they (BJP) were in power, they had supported the FDI in retail. Now, they are opposing it,” he said.

“This is double standards,” the Congress General Secretary said.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a funciton here, he alleged the BJP had always opposed reforms.

On the Bhanwari Devi abduction case, Singh said CDs of some BJP leaders also persist. He did not name the leaders.

Building collapses in Delhi, 4 killed

New Delhi, December 04: Four persons, including three women, were killed when a four-storeyed building in west Delhi collapsed this morning while construction activity was being undertaken to strengthen another adjoining structure.

The building located near Uttam Nagar Metro Station came down at around 11:30 am.

A family of seven resides in the house, they said, adding officials are yet to ascertain how many were in the building when the incident took place.

Mamata-hit Congress puts retail FDI on hold

Kolkata, December 04: In a bid to end the impasse in the Parliament, the government on Saturday put on hold its decision to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.

The government decision was revealed by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday reportedly assured Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee that no foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail would be implemented unless a consensus is reached in the cabinet over the issue.

Iraq no battlefield against Iran: Maliki

Baghdad, December 04: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has warned that Baghdad would not let any country use its soil as a launch pad for hostilities against Iran.

“Clearly we are no enemy to Iran and we do not accept that some who have problems with Iran would use us as a battlefield,” he said during a press conference in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday.

Maliki made the remarks in reaction to recent comments made by the US Vice President Joe Biden about Baghdad-Tehran relations.

Tenant farmers to get interest free loans for Rabi

Hyderabad, December 04: The State Government on Saturday announced that it would provide interest free loans to tenant farmers who are having LEC cards during the Rabi seasons.

In a reply to a question raised by MLAs D Venkata Bala Vardhana Rao and others during Question House in the State Legislative Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha said that there were 5,85,954 tenant farmers across the State. So far, the government has issued cards to 5,76,147 farmers and about 1.30 lakh LEC holders have been sanctioned loans of Rs 270.20 crore.
