Dev got too involved with himself: Waheeda Rehman

Mumbai, December 07: The ethereal Waheeda Rehman missed the opportunity to meet her co-star Dev Anand one last time, but fondly remembers him as a good producer. She, however, feels in recent times he got too involved with himself.

“Without meaning any disrespect to him, I’d like to say that as the years went by Dev’s script sense went more and more haywire. I think he got too involved with himself. Dev was a very good producer. But he needed to look out for better scripts,” said Waheeda.

Doctor returns remote control after 23 years

Madinah, December 7: While Dr. Azhar, a medical doctor from Mauritius, worked at King Fahd Hospital in Madinah, he was given a remote control to operate his TV set at home.

After he left the Kingdom 23 years ago, he discovered he still had the device in his possession. Coming to perform Haj this year, Dr. Azhar brought the remote control with him.

When he visited Madinah to pay homage and pray at the Prophet’s Mosque, he made it a point to go to his old hospital. According to local daily Okaz, he returned the device to the general manager of the hospital, Dr. Abdul Hameed Shahat.

Karnataka may ban bizarre tradition at temples

Bangalore, December 7: The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka may ban a bizarre tradition of people rolling over plantain leaves with leftovers of meals, eaten by Brahmins, at some temples in the belief it cures them of skin ailments.

The ritual, said to be 400 years old, is mostly undertaken at the Kukke Subramanya temple in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, though it is practiced at some temples in neighbouring Udupi district also.

Two mosques and pre-Islamic fort uncovered in Asir province

Riyadh, December 7: A pre-Islamic era fort and foundations of two mosques have been discovered by a Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) team during an exploration at the historical town of Jursh in Asir province.

The two mosques are of the early Islamic period and have been built one over the other. The mosques were built on top of the fort.

Zardari suffers heart attack, may quit?

Islamabad, December 07: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who abruptly left for Dubai late Tuesday, is said to have suffered a minor heart attack, triggering speculation that he may even resign on account of “ill-health”.

A report published in the Foreign Policy magazine, Wednesday, said, “Zardari left for Dubai on a private visit to meet his children and to undergo some medical tests a day ahead of his scheduled address to National Assembly over the recent NATO attack and the Memogate scandal.”

Women arrested for running an illegal restaurant

Madinah: An illegal restaurant in Madinah, selling food to pilgrims, was busted Tuesday.
A committee of representatives from the Madinah municipality and other government departments arrested the three women who were running the eatery.

Ahmad Al-Baadani, director of the municipality’s food supervising department, said the committee heard the women had turned a house in Al-Hasnan district into an illegal restaurant.

211 drunk drivers in Hyderabad booked

Hyderabad, December 07: Two women were among those caught for drunken driving by the city traffic cops during a drive in Banjara Hills area. As many as 211 drunk drivers were booked last Friday and Saturday and their vehicles were seized. The special drive at various places in the twin cities was conducted from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. “A total of 211 drunken drivers were arrested and their vehicles, 79 fourwheelers, 126 twowheelers and six autorickshaws, were seized.

Jilted woman hires goons to rape lover’s wife

Cairo, December 07: An Egyptian woman whose marriage proposals were constantly turned down by her lover, devised a malicious plan to avenge him.

She allegedly hired goons, had them kidnap his wife and ordered them to rape her in front of her as she sat looking. After three days, she asked the men to dump her naked on the road in front of her lover’s house. She then called her lover and told him where he could find his wife, reported ‘Al Youm Al Sabea’.

Sonia Not to Celebrate Birthday on Dec 9

New Delhi, December 07: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who turns 66 on Friday, will not be celebrating her birthday this time also to “avoid inconvenience to people”.

Like last year, keeping in view of the inconvenience caused to people, Gandhi has appealed to the party workers not to come to Delhi on her birthday, party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said today.

She is concerned that people take a lot of trouble and spend money to come to Delhi from far off places to greet her, he said.

Sidhu beats up guard at toll gate, triggers row

Hyderabad, December 07: BJP MP and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu assaulted a security guard at a toll gate in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district after the latter threw his stick at his car damaging the windowshield.

Police said they have not registered a case as the matter was solved amicably.

The incident took place Tuesday evening when Sidhu’s car did not stop despite being asked to do so by guard P. Chenchuramaiah at Swarna toll gate near Sulurpet in Nellore district, 550 km from here.

The guard threw his stick at the car, damaging its rear windshield.

Pawar slap reaction: Hazare admits he ‘committed violence’

Ralegan-Siddhi, December 07: Anna Hazare Tuesday admitted that he had “committed violence” when he asked why a man slapped Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar only once in New Delhi recently.

“But for the betterment of society, I do not consider this violence as wrong. Many politicians felt very bad about the slapping incident, many of them got very angry also,” Hazare said in a post on his blog.

He said people held the person who asked the question (Hazare) more guilty than the man, Harvinder Singh, who had actually slapped Pawar.

Man held for raping his daughter repeatedly

New Delhi, December 07: A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his daughter thrice reportedly at the instigation of her step-mother.

The 15-year-old victim, who managed to flee her house in Jamia Nagar and contact police with the help of an auto driver on Saturday, was produced before the child welfare committee on Monday and sent to the shelter home Prayas. The step-mother has also been arrested.

Wife, lover held for Shakeel’s murder

Hyderabad, December 07: Cyberabad police on Tuesday arrested two persons in connection with the murder of a 54 year old man at Attapur on Monday night.

The deceased, Mohammed Khaleel alias Shakeel, was chased and stabbed to death. During investigation, police found that Shakeel had differences with his first wife and had been staying with his second wife at Jalal Baba Nagar in Rajendranagar. His first wife developed an affair with Ilyas of Erragadda and the duo decided to eliminate Shakeel. Ilyas sought the help of his friend, Asif, to execute the killing.

Indian alert to growing military might of China: Nirupama Rao

New Delhi, December 07: India remains alert to the growing military might of China, even as New Delhi has sought to strengthen its bilateral dialogue with Beijing over the last two decades, a top Indian diplomat based here has said.

Deadlock over FDI ends after all-party meet

New Delhi, December 07: Parliament logjam over the Foreign direct investment in retail ends after all-party meet today.

The opposition agreed to the government offer to hold back the FDI in retail.

Both the houses have adopted the government resolution suspending 51% FDI in retail till a consensus is developed through consultations with various stakeholders.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, “The FDI in retail has been suspended till the consensus is reached.”

CPI said that this is a ‘virtual rollback’ of the FDI decision and they will allow Parliament to function.
