Negligent parents in the UAE risk facing jail

Dubai, December 11: Dubai Police have warned that negligent parents leading their children to danger could be jailed for upto three years, as per the UAE law.

UAE has witnessed repeated accidents involving children during recent months, many resulting in deaths. At least six children have died after accidentally falling from the balcony of high-rise buildings in 2011 alone.

New Delhi, December 11: Bollywood actress Kajol, a mother of two, says education is the prime need of the society, and that every child must be educated to bring about positive change.

The 37-year-old, who is the international goodwill ambassador of Britain-based Loomba Foundation, which supports the cause of educating children of poor widows in India, was here Saturday to attend the annual charity dinner of the organisation.

AMRI Hospital may not be allowed to reopen

Kolkata, December 10: After six directors of the AMRI Hospital were sent to the police custody till December 20 by a Kolkata court, the West Bengal government on Saturday remained non-committal on whether a fresh licence would be issued to the hospital management to resume operations in its annexe-I building where 88 persons choked to death in a fire on Friday.

Earlier, Kolkata Police had put the death toll at 91, but later confirmed that three names were listed twice in the police records.

Anna Hazare to be invited for campaign against Modi govt

Vadodara, December 10 : A BJP rebel in Gujarat is planning to invite anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare to launch a state-wide campaign against the Narendra Modi government.

Former BJP Minister Nalin Bhatt, who has quit the party, said, “we are planning to invite Hazare to Gujarat to launch a crusade against the rampant corruption in the state.”

Bhatt also criticised Modi’s planned Sadbhavna fast in the city on December 15.

Gold rises to Rs 29,330 per 10 grams

New Delhi, December 10: Both gold and silver recovered on the bullion market here Saturday on fresh buying by stockists and jewellers to meet the marriage season demand.

While gold gained Rs 20 to reach Rs 29,330 per 10 grams, silver moved up by Rs 650 to Rs 56,150 per kg.

Traders said fresh buying by stockists and jewellers for the ongoing marriage season mainly led to the recovery in both the precious metals.

Muslim group opposes reservation to Dalit Muslims

Bhopal, December 10: The demand to provide reservation to Dalit Muslims on the lines of Dalits is against the basic principles of Islam, a Muslim organisation said on Saturday.

All-India Muslim Backward Classes Federation (AIMBCF), in a statement here, said reservation was given to Dalits on the account of oppression suffered by the community in the past.

AIMBCF president Ibrahim Qureshi said there was no way in which ‘Dalit Muslims’ can be equated with their counterparts in the Hindu community.

Osama’s widows expected to leave Pak soon

Islamabad, December 10: Three of Osama bin Laden’s widows, who were captured following the US raid that killed the al-Qaeda leader, are soon expected to leave Pakistan after seven months in custody, according to a media report.

The three women- two Saudis and one Yemeni- were picked up by Pakistani security officials early on the morning of May 2 in Abbottabad, just minutes after US Navy SEALs killed bin Laden in the compound where he was believed to be living for six years.

Three women accept Nobel Peace Prize

Oslo, December 10: Three women who fought injustice, dictatorship and sexual violence in Liberia and Yemen have received the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in the Norwegian capital.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, her compatriot Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen collected their Nobel diplomas and medals to applause at Oslo’s City Hall.

Prize committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said the three women represent the struggle for “human rights in general and of women for equality and peace in particular.”

Dev Anand given a tearful farewell amid rich tributes

London, December 10: Dev Anand, who ruled the hearts of millions of film enthusiasts for over six decades, was today bid a tearful adieu as his mortal remains were consigned to flames amid the tunes of some of his most memorable songs `Abhi Na Jao Chor ke` and `Gata Rahe Mera Dil`.

The funeral ceremony was joined in by a large number of people, including his family and close friends like Lord Meghnad Desai and Sahara chief Subroto Roy, as his last rites were held according to Hindu tradition at the Putney Vale Crematorium here.

Cross-voting: Cong wants 16 AP MLAs disqualified

Hyderabad, December 10: Seeking to send a strong signal, Congress on Saturday decided to seek disqualification of 16 party MLAs in Andhra Pradesh who sided with YS Jaganmohan Reddy and voted against the party government in the Assembly, defying the whip.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who was summoned here by the High Command, made the announcement after his meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and general secretary in-charge of the state Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Kidnap case unraveled: kidnapper wanted to save married life of childless sister

Hyderabad, December 10: Police has unraveled the kidnap case of a toddler at Malakpet. City police commissioner A K Khan handed over the abducted child Anirudh to his mother during a press conference and produced the kidnapper before the media.

Jaipal’s niece death: Chargesheet filed

Hyderabad, December 10: CCS sleuths filed a chargesheet against the accused in the alleged murder of Dr S. Kiran Reddy, Union minister S. Jaipal Reddy’s niece.

The chargesheet was filed in the Nampally criminal court against Kiran’s husband S. Chaitanya Reddy, his parents and brother.

The CCS said that Kiran was smothered to death by Chaitanya Reddy in their house after they came home from the party on June 17. After the post mortem report concluded it as case of asphyxia death due to smothering, police arrested Chaitanya Reddy on June 21.

She had wanted to join the police long before she started wearing a hijab.

M A Khan calls for review meet on 15 point formula
