Man rapes daughter, sells her for $365

Mexico City, December 12: A Mexican man was arrested for raping his 14-year-old daughter and then selling her for 5,000 pesos (about $365) to his friend, who also sexually abused her, authorities said.

The two men and one of the girl’s brothers, who failed to prevent the abuse, were arrested by the police in Huixquilucan, a city in Mexico state, the Attorney General’s Office said.

The girl reported the abuse to the AG’s office’s special unit for violence against women and people trafficking, or Fevimtra, at the urging of neighbours, officials said.

Rahul visits Islamic clerics, discusses RTE

Lucknow, December 12: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Sunday visited Nadva, a renowned centre of Islamic learning, and met its rector Maulana Rabe Hasni Nadvi.

Rahul had one-to-one meeting with the rector for over an hour, Congress sources said.

The issue of Right to Education and reported confusion among Muslims over it was discussed, they said adding Rahul assured him that this would be removed.

When asked to give his blessings to Rahul, the rector cited his relations with the Nehru-Gandhi family and said he always had good wishes for them, the sources said.

Woman delivers in public view

Amritsar, December 12: A woman was forced to deliver a child in a corridor of a government hospital after the medical staff allegedly refused to move her to a labour room, prompting authorities to order an inquiry.

Gurpreet Kaur (25), a resident of village Guru Ki Waddali – Chehertha, was taken to the civil hospital in an ambulance and the doctor who was accompanying her asked the senior staff of the hospital to shift the patient to the labour room.

Slippers thrown at TN Finance Minister

Theni, December 12: A day before the DMK fast, protesters opposing Mullaperiyar dam on Sunday gheraoed Tamil Nadhu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam and threw slippers at him near Kumili at the Kerala border after he tried to pacify them following a lathicharge to quell their demonstration, which left 50 persons injured, police said.

The minister escaped unhurt and was later taken away from the spot via another route, they said.

Man get 13 yr for raping daughter

Riyadh, December 12:A Saudi court sentenced a local man for 13 years in jail more than 2,000 lashes with the whip after he was convicted of raping his teen age daughter for nearly four years, a newspaper said on Monday.

Sharq said the man, an alcoholic and drug addict, had been caught red handed with his raped daughter and told police he had done so in retaliation for her “obscene” relations with other men.

The girl’s uncle, her mother’s brother, had informed the police that he suspected her father had been raping her and threatening her against reporting him.

Pak airspace may be closed for US: Gilani

Islamabad, December 12: Pakistan may continue blocking NATO supply convoys into Afghanistan for several weeks and would not rule out closing its airspace to the US, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday.

Gilani said there was a “credibility gap” between Pakistan and the US, and the two sides need to develop greater trust. He made the remarks during an interview with BBC.

Pakistan stopped NATO convoys and asked the US to vacate Shamsi airbase, reportedly used by CIA-operated drones, to protest a NATO air strike which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last month.

Petition against Andhra CM in SC withdrawn

New Delhi, December 12: A petition challenging the continuance of N Kiran Kumar Reddy as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has been withdrawn from the Supreme Court by MLA S Venu Gopala Chary after the former won a no-trust motion last week.

A bench of justices Dalveer Bhandari and Dipak Mishra permitted counsel Sateesh Galla to withdraw the petition as “it had become infructous” in view of Reddy’s victory in the motion moved by Opposition Leader N Chandrababu Naidu.

Hazare’s village observes day-long shut down

Ralegan-Siddhi, December 12: As Anna Hazare observed a token fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, residents of his native Ralegan-Siddhi supported him with a total shutdown in the village.

“Nearly 2,000 people have gathered near the Padmavati temple and the village has been shut down entirely. You will not find a single shop open,” Hazare’s close associate Anil Sharma said.

“More than half of the 2,300 strong village are sitting on a token fast to support Anna. They will break their fast in the evening when Anna does,” he added.

2003 Mumbai blasts: High Court’s verdict today

Mumbai, December 12: The Bombay High Court is likely to give its ruling on Monday on confirmation of death sentence, awarded to three convicts including a woman, in the 2003 Mumbai twin bomb blasts case.

Ashrat Ansari (32), his aide Hanif Sayed Anees (46) and wife Fehmida Sayed (43) were held guilty on charges of planting powerful bombs in two taxis which exploded at the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar on August 25, 2003, killing 52 persons.

A special Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court had in August 2009 awarded capital punishment to the trio.

Rahul lands at clergy door for Muslim pie

Lucknow, December 12: Desperately seeking Muslim votes to sail through the 2012 Assembly election, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday reached the doorstep of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, the noted Sunni seminary in Lucknow.

He spent about an hour with its rector Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadwi, who is also the president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

Although Ulama has a tradition of keeping silent on the issue of any political meeting, Rahul’s visit is clearly an effort to send a signal that the Muslims are with the Congress.

London 2012 chief says he supports Dow sponsorship

Beijing, December 12: The chairman of London`s 2012 Olympic organizing committee said on Sunday that he is comfortable with having Dow Chemical participate as a sponsor of the games despite criticism over its links to a gas leak in India that killed thousands.

An estimated 15,000 people died in 1984 when gas leaked out of a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the central Indian city of Bhopal. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001 and says legal claims from the disaster have been resolved.

Sydney, December 12: Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is technically a far superior batsman than West Indian legend Brian Lara, former Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill has said.

“I’ve said on many occasions that as a spin bowler, the most devastating batsman I’ve played against was Lara. Having said that, Brian always went so hard I always felt like he’d miss one eventually, and it did happen occasionally,” MacGill wrote in an article for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Congress terms Anna’s fast premature, insult to parliament

New Delhi, December 11: The Congress Sunday rejected Anna Hazare’s token fast for a strong anti-corruption Lokpal bill, terming it “preemptive” and “premature” and an “insult to parliament”.

“I have no hesitation in saying that Anna is insulting parliament,” said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.

“The Lokpal bill report has been submitted. There will be debate and decision will be taken. Laws cannot be made at Jantar Mantar,” he said.

BSP MP arrested in murder case

Lucknow, December 11: Mafia don-turned-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Dhananjay Singh was arrested here Sunday evening in connection with his alleged involvement in a double murder.

Uttar Pradesh Police chief Brij Lal said Dhananjay was arrested for the murder of two members of an OBC Nishad community in 2010 in Kirakat town of Jaunpur district, about 230 km from here, which is his constituency.

“This followed his indictment by the crime branch of the Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) to which the case was entrusted shortly after the incident,” he added.

Two persons including a woman commit suicide

Hyderabad, December 11: A 68-year-old man committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling fan at his residence.

According to Neredmet police, Varalakshmi Murthy, a retired railway employee, took the extreme step late Saturday while he was alone at his residence in Sri Nagar Colony. Loneliness is suspected to be cause behind Murthy’s suicide. However, police registered a case and further investigations into the case are on.

Teacher among two killed in road accidents

Hyderabad, December 11: Two persons were killed in different road accidents in the city on Sunday.

A 32-year-old man, Krishna, suffered grievous injuries when the auto-rickshaw he was travelling over-turned near Moinabad. According to police, Krishna, a teacher with MK Pally Government Upper Primary School, met with the accident on Sunday morning. He was immediately rushed to the Osmania General Hospital where he died a few hours later.

The Moinabad police registered a case of negligent driving against the auto-rickshaw driver who has been arrested.
