US Children in Mock Hajj to Makkah

Washington, November 04: As nearly three million Muslims are preparing to start the annual hajj on Friday, November 4, American Muslim children are being taught about the ritual of the fifth pillar of Islam.

“We take them through every step just as if they’re [going through it],” Hafsa Abdelrahman told Voice of America.

Abdelrahman teaches a number of young children of the Dar Al-Hijrah weekend school in Washington about the rituals of hajj.

Moti Masjid painting gets 3mn USD

New York, November 04: Russian artist Vasili Vasilievich Vereshchagin’s painting of an Indian mosque has fetched $3.1m at Sotheby’s auction held in New York, US.

The masterpiece, which is 3.9 meters tall and 16 4.8 meters wide, features men kneeling in prayer at New Delhi’s Pearl Mosque also known as the Moti Masjid.

One of the artist’s most significant works, The Pearl Mosque painting was created between 1876 and 1879 and belongs to Vereshchagin’s Indian series, the state-funded BBC reported.

Venkat Reddy’s fast unto death continues

Hyderabad, November 04: A warm reaction was witnessed at the hunger strike camp of K. Venkat Reddy who is observing ‘Fast Unto Death’ for separate Telangana. His fast entered 4th day today. People from far off places are reaching the camp to extend moral support to the Telangana leader. Police diverted the traffic seeing the large gathering of T-supporters.

Ex-gratia of Rs. 579.83 cr. distributed among heirs to Bhopal gas victims & survivors

Bhopal, November 04: The legal heirs of who lost their lives and survivors of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the world’s worst industrial disaster, are being paid enhanced compensation by the Central Government on the advice of the Group of Ministers constituted for the purpose.

So far, an amount of Rs. 578.83 crore has been distributed among the heirs in 36,948 cases of Bhopal gas tragedy so far. Commissioner relief is distributing the ex-gratia amount in rest of 11,776 cases. A sum of Rs.104 crore will be spent on economic rehabilitation of gas-hit families with experts’ advice.

Female inmate strips before Sadhvi

Mumbai, November 04: Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, an undertrial in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, was allegedly attacked by a Nigerian inmate in Byculla jail on Tuesday. According to Sadhvi’s lawyer Navin Chomal, the Nigerian inmate had been mentally harassing her for a while.

Crying wolf? Sadhvi’s advocate has alleged that her prison mate would repeatedly flash her, and didn’t stop in spite of her protests

89,000 illegal pilgrims returned

Mina, November 04: The Passport Department has sent back 89,000 people who were traveling to Makkah without Haj permit.

The passport officials also arrested 1,600 overstayers and those who violated residence regulations or attempting to sneak in with forged permits, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

There are 16 passport checkpoints around Makkah and four in Madinah region.

RTA offices hit by staff shortage

Hyderabad, November 04: Shortage of staff in the Road Transport Authority offices is hampering regular work. The RTA offices where over 35,000 different transactions take place everyday, have around 500 vacancies in various ranks.

According to RTA officials, there are over 500 vacant posts of assistant motor vehicle inspectors, clerks and constables in all RTA offices in the state, with 150 vacant posts in Hyderabad alone.

Hence, the officials are unable to complete work in time due to lack of sufficient staff and sometimes they face anger of the people for the delay.

Police bust four gangs, recover Rs 71 lakh property

Hyderabad, November 04: In a major breakthrough, the sleuths of Central Crime Station busted four different gangs of property offenders who were involved in many cases.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, City Police Commissioner AK Khan said that the gangs were involved in 33 cases and the police Stolen property worth nearly Rs 71 lakh has been recovered in all cases.

Over 46 million Americans live in poverty

Washington, November 04: They may not be starving, but by American standards some 46.2 million people live in poverty today, more than at any other time in American history, erasing gains made in reducing poverty during the 1990s, according to a new study.

Compared to the 1990s they are more likely to be white, live in the Midwest, have a high school diploma and own a home, according to shows, the Brookings Institution, a research group based in Washington, said in a report released Thursday.

Will Yeddyurappa walk out of jail today?

Bangalore, November 04: Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa will get to know today if he can walk out of jail. Yesterday, a court in Bangalore granted him conditional bail in one of the two cases that have landed him in jail. But he cannot leave prison till he gets bail in both cases. The order on the second case will be out today.

The BJP leader has been in prison for 21 days. He was arrested by the Lokayukta police in Bangalore on October 15 for his alleged involvement in a scam that saw his family members getting prize land at throwaway prices while he was Chief Minister.
