Canada Muslims Moderate, Diverse: Study

Cairo, November 04: A new survey has found that Canadian Muslims are moderate and diverse and are content with their country’s freedoms and lawfulness, an example that can be applied to other Western countries.

“The Leuprecht-Winn study establishes that Canada has the most moderate, diverse, and open Muslim population in the West,” Daniel Pipes, President of the Middle East Forum in Washington, said in a commentary included with the study.

Tantrik raped, blackmail women, held

New Delhi, November 04: A 33-year-old tantrik was arrested in west Delhi for allegedly raping women, later blackmailing them and then compelling them to transfer their property, on Tuesday. The Tantrik was apprehended from Uttam Nagar on Tuesday, following investigations into a complaint, V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west), said.

The arrest came following a complaint filed by a woman on Monday, who alleged that she was being continuously raped by a tantrik, who also got her property registered in his wife’s name, by deceiving her.

Kerala High Court slams frequent petrol price hike

Kochi, November 04: Flaying the frequent hike in petrol prices, the Kerala High Court on Friday said Central and state governments cannot “wash their hands” off and directed the Indian Oil Corporation and Reliance Petroleum to produce their balance sheets and quarterly reports before it in three weeks.

Within the last one year, there had been a 40 percent hike in petroleum prices, causing immense hardhship to the common man, a division bench, comprising Acting chief justice CN Ramachandran Nair and justice PS Gopinathan, said in oral observations.

Narendra Modi to visit China next week

Gujarat, November 04: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will pay a five-day visit to China from November 8 at the invitation of the ruling Communist Party, during which he will explore investment opportunities.

Modi would visit Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu and address some business events to highlight investment prospects in Gujarat.

Besides interacting with senior Chinese leaders in Beijing, Modi would address a seminar being organised here by the Indian embassy along with the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCM).

PM to address Maldivian Parliament

New Delhi, November 04: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address Peoples’ Majlis in Male next week during his visit to the SAARC Summit, making him the first foreign Head of Government to address the Maldivian Parliament in its 78-year-old history.

Official sources told PTI that Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdullah Shahid has sent a formal invitation to the Prime Minister to address the Majlis during his official visit to Maldives for the two-day SAARC Summit on November 10-11, which has been accepted.

Saints don’t run away: Raj Babbar on Ramdev

Bhimnagar, November 04: Taking pot-shots at yoga guru Ramdev, Congress MP Raj Babbar has said real saints do not change their attire to save their lives.

“Real saints do not change their chola (attire) and run away to save themselves,” Babbar told reporters here last night referring to Ramdev, who had fled from Ramlila grounds in Delhi, attired as a woman in June last.

Babbar said he knew Ramdev as one who teaches yoga but not as a person indulging in trade.

He said that he could act as a “speed breaker” in the programmes of Ramdev.

Japan govt. approves aid to N-plant co.

Tokyo, November 04: The Japanese government has agreed to help the operator of the temblor-ravaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant pay compensation to those inflicted by Japan’s nuclear disaster.

Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yukio Edano met Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) President Toshio Nishizawa on Friday, and accepted to give $11.5 billion to the cash-strapped company, Kyodo news agency reported.

TEPCO promised to reduce operating costs by $3.5 billion for the current fiscal year in return for the funds.

In Mogadishu, 11 Somali soldiers killed

Somalia, November 04: Captain Hassan Hirsi, a Somali military official, told Press TV that the soldiers died on Friday morning after al-Shabab fighters launched an attack on Somalia’s transitional government forces in Mogadishu’s northern district of Bondhere.

An intense battle broke out in the aftermath of the attack with the two sides exchanging heavy gunfire and barrages of mortar shells.

More than 30 Somali soldiers sustained injuries as a result.

Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Israeli airstrike kills 2 in northern Gaza

Gaza, November 04: Palestinian medical officials said on Thursday that a firefight broke out as Islamic resistance fighters confronted a number of Israeli soldiers who had entered the northern town of Beit Lahiya and attacked the people there.

The resistance fighters retaliated to Israeli fire but later the invaders called in military helicopters, which bombed the Palestinians.

According to hospital officials, the two people were killed by Israeli helicopter fire.

Since last Friday, Israel has killed at least twelve people in Gaza.

Massive throng of Muslims begins hajj rites

Makkah, November 04: More than 2.5 million Muslim pilgrims began today the rites of the annual hajj pilgrimage, leaving the holy city of Makkah for Mount Arafat, where the prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) is believed to have delivered his final hajj sermon.

Dressed in white, they flooded the streets as they headed towards Mina, around five kilometres (three miles) east of the holy mosque.

The day is known as Tarwiah (Watering) Day, as pilgrims traditionally watered their animals and stocked water for their trip to Mount Arafat, some 10 kilometres further on.

Asif wants to get back with Veena?

Karachi, November 04: Few days before the British courts declared former Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Asif guilty of match-fixing, he made a distress call to ex girlfriend, model-actress Veena Malik and asked her to come to London as he needed her.

The actress, who was in a live-in relationship with the cricketer before she got to know about his misdeeds, refused the offer.

Youth commits suicide as mother refused to give Rs 20

Hyderabad, November 4: 18 year old Mohammad Dastageer committed suicide in an incident occurred under Madannapet police station limits when his mother refused to give him Rs 20.

It is said that on November 1 Mohammad Dastageer asked his mother to give Rs 20, which his mother refused to give. Later when his mother was away from home Mohammad Dastageer poured Kerosene over his body and set himself on fire. He was severely burnt in the incident and was shifted to Osmania hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Satyam scam accused Raju gets bail

New Delhi, November 04: Ramalinga Raju, former chairman and founder of Satyam Computers along with his brother has been granted bail by the Supreme Court.

The CBI on Nov 3 had opposed the bail pleas of Ramalinga Raju and his brother Rama Raju, the main accused in the Rs 14,000 crore corporate fraud.

The CBI also said that if they would be released on bail, there was a possibility of them tampering with evidence.

Municipal corporation evades property tax hike

Hyderabad, November 04: The General Body meeting of the Municipal Corporators was held yesterday at GHMC office tank Bund under the stewardship of its Mayor Ms. Bandaru Kartika Reddy.

Osama killed within 90 seconds of raid

Washington, November 04: A former commander of US Navy SEAL, which had carried out the Osama operation, has claimed that the al-Qaeda leader was shot dead within 90 seconds of the raid beginning rather than killed in a 45-minute firefight, as earlier claimed.

Chuck Pfarrer contradicted the official account of how the SEAL team landed and how one of their Black Hawk helicopters crashed.

“Bin Laden was dead within 90 seconds of the beginning of the raid, not after an extended firefight,” The Telegraph quoted Pfarrer, as saying in a statement.
