Pilgrims perform final hajj rituals

Jeddah, November 08: Nearly three million Muslim pilgrims were performing the final rituals of the hajj on Tuesday as the world’s largest annual gathering neared its close without major incident.

The most dangerous rite of the annual hajj proceeded peacefully as pilgrims rushed to throw 21 stones at three pillars that symbolise the devil, the last rite of the annual pilgrimage which is compulsory for all Muslims who can make the journey.

Imran Khan defends his Kashmir remark

Isllamabad, November 08: Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who leads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has justified his remark that Indian troops would fail in Kashmir.

In an interview to Times Now channel, Khan said: “I don’t think Indian army for 20 years or 700,000 troops in Kashmir is going to solve any problems.

I think it’s only going to produce hatred. It’s counter productive. It’s a solution. It probably means I might be a well wisher for India to actually say this. It doesn’t mean I’m an enemy of India.”

Bhupen Hazarika’s funeral to be held on Wednesday

Guwahati, November 08: Assam government has postponed to Wednesday the funeral of Bhupen Hazarika in view of the huge turnout of people wanting to pay their last respect to the music legend.

“People from all parts of the state have descended on Judges Field where his body has been kept and have queued up since 3 am. It will not be possible for all to pay their respect till 2 pm today,” Assam Culture Minister Pranati Phukan said.

In view of the situation, the government has decided not to cremate the body today and has rescheduled the funeral to 7 am tomorrow, she said.

Tension at OU as T-students stage rally

Hyderabad, November 08: Tension gripped Osmania University for a few hours on Monday as security forces fired teargas shells to disperse students who took out a rally.

The students took out the rally after hearing the news of the suicide of an Arts College student in Adilabad district. One Naikini Nagesh (26), a second year student of MA (Hindi) at the University College of Arts, committed suicide by jumping before a running train at the Mancherial railway station in the wee hours of Monday. He left a suicide note saying that he was ending his life for the sake of Telangana.

Media can cover Aish delivery: Big B

Mumbai, November 08: After some leading news organisations reported that Amitabh Bachchan has requested Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry to issue guidelines to Media regarding the coverage of Aishwarya’s delivery, Big B on his Twitter page slammed these reports calling them
“ridiculous, malicious and completely false allegations.”

Half of Americans give Obama thumbs down

Washington, November 08: Exactly a year before the presidential polls, half of Americans say President Barack Obama does not deserve to be re-elected versus 40 percent who say he does, according to a new poll.

Independents, in particular, have lost faith in the Democratic president, says the Christian Science Monitor/TIPP poll released Monday. But attitudes can change a lot in a year, as history shows, it says.

Moreover, Obama’s performance scores as many failing grades as it does soaring marks from the general public, it said.

Obscene film on Saudi TV channel, sparks fire

Riyadh, November 08: A major Saudi satellite TV movie channel has come under fire for showing a film containing nude women and other obscene scenes, with viewers calling for punishment of those responsible, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The Arabic language daily Sabq said it had received scores of phone calls from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries criticizing MBC Max channel for showing the movie that contained obscene scenes for several minutes.

Rs 6 lakh, 20 tola gold ornaments stolen

Hyderabad, November 08: Unidentified persons stole Rs 6 lakh cash and 20 tola gold ornaments from a police constable’s house on Monday.According to police, the incident took place at an Armed Reserved constable’s house at Narasimhanagar.

The miscreants broke into the house while the constable’s family members had gone to Karimnagar for their younger daughter’s wedding reception. Police said the constable Yadgiri, lodged a complaint on Monday morning to Banjara Hills police that unidentified persons gained entry into his house and decamped with Rs 6 lakh cash and 20 tola gold ornaments.

Amar Singh to go to Singapore for treatment

New Delhi, November 08: Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, who was allowed by a Delhi court to travel abroad for treatment, said he will be visiting Singapore later this month.

“My doctor who performed liver transplant in Singapore is in the US and will be back only on Nov 16. So, I have decided to delay my visit to Singapore and will now go by Nov 15-16,” Singh told reporters here.

Addressing media for the first time after being discharged from AIIMS, Singh said he will inform the court about the change in his schedule and would also pass on details of his stay.

George Bush in Mumbai on private visit

Mumbai, November 08: Former US president George W. Bush arrived here late Monday on a private visit, a police officer said.

“We have provided the security for Mr Bush for Tuesday. He would leave Mumbai Wednesday,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajnish Seth told IANS.

Seth, however, refused to divulge any details on where Bush was staying or the purpose of his visit, citing security concerns.

“I do not know the purpose of his visit. We shall not be giving out any details as to where he is staying or his schedule for Tuesday,” Seth said.

Delhi’s star goat this Eid costs Rs.1.5 lakh

New Delhi, November 08: The livestock markets in Old Delhi’s Jama Masjid area are witnessing high footfalls and doing brisk business as Muslims gear up to celebrate Eid-ul-Zuha Monday. The most expensive goat this year is priced at Rs.1.5 lakh!

“Due to natural patterns, one side of this goat’s back reads ‘Allah’ while the other side has ‘Muhammad’ etched on it,” said Mohammed Sabir standing next to Chanda the goat, which is adorned with a garland and coloured frills.

However, a similar goat last year, though much healthier, had a price tag of a whopping Rs.4.5 lakh.

Michael Jackson’s doctor found guilty of manslaughter

Los Angeles, November 08: Michael Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death in 2009.

In a lengthy trial that lasted six-weeks, a Los Angeles County jury found Murray guilty of administering propofol to Jackson. The jury found that Murray, 58, acted with criminal negligence, which led to Jackson’s death. They rejected the argument of defence that the singer gave himself an overdose of propofol and therefore was responsible for his own death, the Los Angeles Times reported.

High Court to hear Delhi Police’s plea on Abu Salem

New Delhi, November 08: The High Court will take up the petition of the Delhi Police urging the court to drop MCOCA charges against jailed gangster Abu Salem. This is because imposition of these charges have jeopardised Salem’s extradition.

The Portuguese High Court recently ruled that Salem should be brought back from India as the latter has violated the terms and conditions of the extradition treaty according to which, no charge that carries a punishment of life imprisonment or death sentence, can be imposed on the accused.
