HC questions BDA on land acquisition

Bangalore, July 1: While hearing a case wherein a citizen has challenged acquisition of his land – 29 years ago – for a project that was not fully executed, the High Court asked the commissioner of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to be present in the court.
The HC has asked the commissioner to be in the court for next hearing, on July 4, or submit an affidavit regarding the status of Kamakshi Layout to let the court pass an order regarding a petition.

Three-month jail term for child marriage

Bangalore, July 1: The performers and abettors of child marriages may get at least three months of imprisonment along with hefty fine if the Centre acts on the recommendations made by a committee to check the menace of child labour.
The core committee headed by retired SC Judge Shivaraj Patil in its report submitted to the state government on Thursday, has asked the latter to impress upon the Centre to get the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 amended to ensure at least three months imprisonment for those who support or perform child marriages.

33-yr-old woman found murdered with throat slit

Bangalore, July 1: A 33-year-old woman, who was alone at home was found murdered at her residence in Hanumanthanagar on Thursday afternoon.
The victim has been identified as Aruna, wife of one, Somesh. The couple who owned a provison store in the city, hailed from Mulbagal taluk in Kolar district and have two children Niharika and Trishakthi.

Five labourers crushed under crane

Bangalore, July 1: Five labourers were killed when a portion of a crane came crashing down at the DLF Westend Heights New Town project site at Akshaynagar, Begur, off Bannerghatta Road around 5.30 pm on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Baljit Singh, Avtar Singh, Vikram Singh, Srikanth and Amarnath, all in the age group of 25-30 years. They were from Punjab, Maharashtra and Bihar.
Praveen Bhosle (28), has been admitted to Fortis Hospital with multiple injuries.

Train derailed, none hurt

Bangalore, July 1: Two pairs of front wheels of Bangalore– Chennai Express derailed on Thursday morning at 7.55 am at SBC railway station. There was, however, no report of any injury or casualty in the incident, according to the Southern Railway authorities. “The train was scheduled to leave the station at 8 am.
The engine started while coming back to fix the bogie, when suddenly it was derailed.
The inicident scared some of the passengers, who left the station immediately,” Velu, a porter at the station, said.
The train was late by 1 hour 15 minutes.

Commandos ready to take on terrorists

Bangalore, july 1: The first batch of commandos trained under the Centre for Counter Terrorism (CCT) of the Internal Security Division (ISD) is now ready and it was dedicated to the state by the Home Minister R Ashok on Thursday.
The Response Counter Terrorism Team presented a demonstration at CCT, various urban counter-terrorism skills such as slithering, rappelling, room and vehicle intervention, weapon handling and life-saving medical trauma care at Kudlu. Home Minister R Ashok, senior police officers and media persons witnessed the demonstration of the commandos.

Man stabs wife, ends life as kids watch

Bagalore, July 1: For Mohammad Salman (14) and his younger brother Mohammed Farqon it was supposed to be just another day. Instead, they saw a horrifying event unfold at their home in Kausar Nagar near Dharmaraya Swamy Temple Street on Thursday morning. As they were getting ready for school, they saw their father stabbing their mother and then jumping to his own death.
Their father Afsar Pasha (45) and mother Gul Nawaz Khanum (42) had been married for 14 years but were living separately since the last eight years.

APTransco bags three major awards

Hyderabad, July 1: Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation Limited (APTransco) bagged three major national wards for its outstanding performance in various fields. The corporation obtained the national vigilance excellence award – 2011, ICWAI-2011 national award for cost management and the excellent public service sector award.
The corporation also achieved record savings of around Rs 180 crore by introducing cost control measures, optimal inventory control systems and accounting and timely completion of transmission schemes.

Chavez says he is fighting cancer after surgery

Caracas, July 1: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez revealed on Thursday night that he is fighting cancer after having a tumor removed in Cuba, but assured his countrymen that he is doing well as he sought to cool growing questions about his health and ability to govern.
Chavez said in a televised talk that the operation took out a growth in which there were “cancerous cells.”
The 56-year-old president said the surgery was done after an initial operation nearly three weeks ago for the removal of a pelvic abscess. He called his situation “this new battle that life has placed before us.”

Sudan’s army attacking civilians: UN report

Juba, July 1: The U.N. said in a report on Thursday that Sudan is denying it full access to tens of thousands of civilians near an area between north and south Sudan where violence continues less than 10 days before Southern Sudan becomes the world’s newest nation.
The Nuba people — black Africans who have opposed the rule of Sudan’s Arab north — have streamed into the Nuba Mountains in search of safety from attacks by Sudan’s military in Southern Kordofan, a part of Sudan’s north. At least 73,000 have fled.

Aussie doctor jailed for genital mutilation

Sydney, July 1: A former Australian gynecologist has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for mutilating a patient’s genitals and indecently assaulting two other patients.
Graeme Reeves was sentenced in a Sydney court on Friday after a judge found him guilty of assaulting two patients during internal examinations.
Earlier, a jury convicted him of inflicting grievous bodily harm by removing a patient’s clitoris during surgery in 2002 to remove a lesion from her labia.
Reeves has denied the accusations.

Unhappy over the delay in formation of separate state, public representatives of the ruling party in Andhra Pradesh Friday decided to submit their resignations.

Senior leader K. Keshava Rao told reporters that the MPs would submit their resignations to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar while the state legislators would hand over their papers to state assembly Speaker N. Manohar.

Putin urges clean-up operation in Arctic

Suu Kyi to travel into Myanmar’s countryside

Yangon, July 1: A spokesman for Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi says the pro-democracy leader will make her first trip into the countryside since her release from house arrest last November.
Hantha Myint said Friday that Suu Kyi will make a private four-day visit to the ancient city of Bagan with her youngest son, Kim Aris, who is visiting from Britain.
Suu Kyi is expected to make a separate trip to meet supporters in the weeks ahead, State media has warned that those plans could trigger riots.

US Senate confirms Petraeus to lead CIA

Washington, July 1: The US Senate voted 94-0 on Thursday to confirm Gen. David Petraeus as the next director of the CIA, a post left vacant by Leon Panetta’s appointment as secretary of defense.
A veteran of more than 37 years in the US Army, Petraeus has been serving for the past year as commander of international forces in Afghanistan.
“His military service will come in handy. I think his analytical skills and ability will come in handy. He is the right man for the job,” the Senate Intelligence Committee chair, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, said before Thursday’s vote.
