Iran opposition vows protests until leaders are freed

Berlin, February 28: The Iranian opposition said Monday that its protests would continue until the release of two of its main leaders, according to messages on its websites.

The protests were aimed at securing the release from custody of Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who have been kept incommunicado under house arrest for almost two weeks.

The movement known as Green Wave has said it plans to hold protests Tuesday, and again March 15 if the two leaders are not released.

Beijing, February 28: A call for protests on Sunday in more than 20 Chinese cities resulted in a tiny turnout but an enormous law enforcement presence that led to police clashes with foreign journalists in Beijing.

Hundreds protest Lebanon’s ‘sectarian’ government

Beirut, February 28: About 500 people waving flags and chanting for national unity have gathered in Beirut in a protest inspired by the wave of demonstrations across the Middle East.

The crowd held signs Sunday criticizing the sectarian makeup of Lebanon’s government. According to Lebanon’s power-sharing system, the president must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister a Sunni Muslim and the parliament speaker a Shiite Muslim.

Each faith makes up about a third of Lebanon’s population of 4 million.

Clinton in Europe for sanctions talks

Geneva, February 28: Hillary Clinton was flying to Geneva last night for talks with European foreign ministers and diplomats from the Middle East and Africa in an attempt to further co-ordinate the international response to the crisis in Libya.

The UN Security Council unanimously imposed what Washington claimed were “biting sanctions” on Saturday, including travel bans and asset freezes on Col Gaddafi and his family.

Christian town in north Iraq offers refuge

Mosul, February 28: Qara Qosh, which lies east of Mosul in Nineveh province, took in hundreds of families after an October 31 massacre in a Baghdad church claimed by Al-Qaeda.

Forty-four worshippers and two priests were killed in the incident that terrorised the minority and drew condemnation from Iraq’s top Muslim clergy.

Libya uprising: Anti-Gaddafi forces control Zawiya

Tripoli, February 28: Forces fighting to oust the Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi have seized the city of Zawiya, 50km (30 miles) west of the capital, Tripoli.

The Libyan government took journalists to Zawiya on Sunday morning.

But instead of a show of government force, reporters saw opposition fighters manning the barricades in the city centre and flying their flag.

The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Saturday to impose sanctions on Col Gaddafi’s regime.

Afghan Team Says NATO Killed Civilians in Strikes

Kabul, February 28: Afghan investigators said Sunday that they were convinced that NATO forces killed 65 civilians in airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan this month, a charge that, if true, would be one of the worst civilian casualty episodes of the war.

NATO officials, who are still investigating the claims, have insisted that the people killed were insurgents.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and the United Nations are also investigating and have not completed their reports, which typically are the most thorough investigations and are perceived as impartial.

115, Including Civilians, Killed in Latest Somali Govt Offensive

Somalia, February 28: At least 115 people have been killed, including at least 49 innocent civilians, in the latest offensive by the self-proclaimed Somali government, which years after moving to the nation is still struggling to control more than a tiny portion of the capital city.

A spokesmen for the Burundian soldiers helping the “government” in the offensive insisted that only 6 AU soldiers were slain in the offensive, with 60 militants killed. Such estimates will likely, if history is any indicator, be contradicted by the militant faction.

At Least 29 Dead in Iraq Protest Crackdowns

Baghdad, February 28: The death toll in Iraq’s broad anti-regime protests, and the subsequent violent crackdown by security forces, has risen to 29 killed, with untold hundreds of others wounded across at least eight cities since Friday.

The Maliki government reacted to the protests, which they blamed on supports of long-dead Saddam Hussein, with mass detentions of leaders and journalists, and one of the detained journalists, Hussan al-Ssairi, who detailed the beatings and threats of execution in custody, slammed the move as “a picture of the new democracy in Iraq.”

Rebel Forces Prepare Final Push in Tripoli

Tripoli, February 28: The rebel faction in East Libya has established a new “unified” command for the military forces which have defected from the Gadhafi regime onto the side of the protesters, and are looking at a final push against Tripoli.

And despite early warnings from some of the military commanders that they are “not ready” to take on the heavily armed, well-trained mercenaries loyal to the Gadhafi regime, others are suggesting that they are quite eager to end the regime’s hold on its last major city.

Clinton: US ready to aid to Libyan opposition

Washington, February 28: The Obama administration stands ready to offer “any type of assistance” to Libyans seeking to oust Moammar Gadhafi, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday, adding a warning to other African nations not to let mercenaries go to the aid of the longtime dictator.

Clinton made no mention of any U.S. military assistance in her remarks to reporters before flying to Geneva for talks with diplomats from Russia, the European Union and other powers eager to present a united anti-Gadhafi front.

Libyan Opposition Spurns Calls for Foreign ‘Help’

Tripoli, February 28: Though it seems clear that the international community in general and the United States in particular are bound and determined to do “something” about the massive uprising in Libya, the protesters’ leadership is openly spurning those calls and insists it doesn’t need their sort of help.

Hafiz Ghoga, a spokesman for the protesters’ new National Libyan Council, insisted that calls for foreign intervention were entirely unwelcome, adding that the protesters have taken most of the nation and “the rest of Libya will be liberated by the people.”

Man held with drugs worth Rs.1 crore

New Delhi, February 28: A 25-year-old drug peddler was arrested with about 1 kg of smack worth around Rs.1 crore (over $220,000) in the international market, police said Monday.

Mehraj, who hails from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, was held from Nigam Bodh Ghat in north Delhi Sunday when he came to supply the consignment, a senior police officer said.

During interrogation, Mehraj told the police that he joined the gang of a drug supplier named Shibu three years ago in Bareilly.

Court rejects bail application of Maoist Srinivasalu

Malkangiri, February 28: Bail application of Maoist Sriramulu Srinivasalu, one of the ultras whose release had been demanded by abductors of Malkangiri district Collector RV Krishna, was rejected by a local court on Monday.

Additional District Judge MS Dhal rejected the bail plea of Srinivasalu, who had a week ago been granted bail by a Fast Track Court here in connection with another case, his lawyer RP Patnaik said.

The ultra continued to remain in jail in connection with the present case involving attack on policemen, he said.

CBI court tells Talwars to attend hearing, issues warrants

Ghaziabad, February 28: A CBI special court here Monday issued bailable warrants against Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the parents of murdered teenager Aarushi Talwar, after they failed to appear before it, while the Allahabad High Court continued to hear their plea against their being tried for the crime.

The Ghaziabad-based Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court, earlier this month, ordered that Aarushi’s doctor parents should be tried for the gruesome killing of their own daughter in Noida about three years ago.

Los Angeles, February 28: Aishwarya and Hoffman reportedly met in Los Angeles at an exhibition basketball game at Staples Center. Hoffman had come with his son Jake, and Ash was with her husband Abhishek Bachchan.

Thousands of people from villages and towns would squat on the railway tracks from 6 am to 6 pm tomorrow as part of the protest named ‘Palle Palle Pattala Paiki’ (villages on railway tracks), Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) Convener M Kodandaram told reporters here on Tuesday.

Man kills wife on tenth wedding anniversary

New Delhi, February 28: Hours after celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary, a wife was smothered to death by her husband who was tired of their constant quarrels and fights, police said Sunday. The man has been arrested.

Prince Kocher, 32 murdered Anchal Kocher, 29 in their home in Janakpuri in west Delhi on the night of Feb 25-26 by suffocating her following an altercation.
