‘Iran’s saffron exports to hit 100 tons’

Tehran, February 03: Iran’s saffron exports will increase by more than 10 percent to top an annual 100 tons by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20).

Head of Iran’s Union of Sellers and Exporters of Saffron Gholam Reza Miri said the country exported 90 tons of the precious spice last year.

Iran, the largest saffron producer in the world, exports saffron to 46 countries including European and Persian Gulf countries, IRIB quoted Miri as saying.

Earlier last month, Miri said that Iran exported about 68 tons of saffron in the first three quarters of the year.

Protestation indexed in opposition to Bipasha Basu for disgusting picture

Mumbai, February 03: A local advocate has filed acomplaint against Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu in amagistrate”s court here, alleging that her picture in therecent issue of the magazine `Maxim” was obscene.Advocate Nisar Mohammed states in his complaint that hecame across the pictures when he recently purchased theJanuary issue of the magazine.

His wife, children and acquaintances “felt outraged” onseeing it, and asked him to throw the magazine away, thecomplaint adds. Chief Judicial Magistrate, R G Singh will hear the caseon February 15.

Israeli warplane pounds Gaza tunnel

Jerusalem, February 03: An Israeli warplane has once again pounded the southern Gaza Strip, targeting the tunnel network used to transfer vital goods from Egypt to the blockaded territory.

The F-16 jet flew over the city of Rafah on Wednesday and fired a missile at a Palestinian tunnel, witnesses told Xinhua news agency.

The attack caused a huge explosion which destroyed the tunnel, but there were no immediate reports on the possible injuries.

London bombers instructed by phone from Pak

London, February 03: The ringleader of the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings on London’s transport system received advice from a mystery figure in Pakistan just days before the attacks, an inquest heard Wednesday.

Mobile phone records showed a series of calls made from phone boxes of Rawalpindi to bomber Mohammad Sidique Khan, a police officer told hearings in London into the deaths of 52 people.

Israeli planes hit Gaza tunnel, no casualties

Gaza City, February 03: The Israeli air force bombed a suspected smuggling tunnel on the Gaza-Egypt border on Wednesday in response to rocket attacks, the military said. No casualties were reported.

“The site was targeted in response to the recent rocket fire from the Gaza Strip,” a military statement said, referring to Grad rockets and mortar rounds fired from Gaza on Monday night, one of which exploded near a wedding in southern Israel, although nobody was injured.

Witnesses in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah said there were no casualties in the Israel air raid.

Uniform guidelines to deal with food-borne diseases

Dubai, February 03: From next month onwards, hospitals and other healthcare establishments in Dubai will have to follow uniform guidelines for the investigation and surveillance of food-borne illnesses and food poisoning cases.

This will ensure that related symptoms are concluded a case of food poisoning or a food-borne disease only when clinical symptoms, food samples and lab tests tally. The application of such guidelines is expected to change the current scenario of some doctors misdiagnosing diarrhea and vomiting as symptoms of food poisoning.

Two get life terms for drug trafficking

Sharjah, February 03: The Shariah Court of First Instance on Wednesday sentenced two Asians to life imprisonment and another Asian to 14 years in jail and a fine of Dh50,000 for trafficking in 4kg of opium and pain-relieving drug Tramadol.

The convicts will be deported after serving their jail terms. Two defendants were found guilty of possession of opium and drug use, while the defendant was convicted of possession of opium.

The judgement was based on Federal Law No. 14 of 1995 regarding trafficking in and use of narcotic substances.

Youth tries to end life over lost love

Ras Al Khaimah, February 03: A 27-year-old Indian expatriate attempted to commit suicide in Ras Al Khaimah after being dumped by his lover he left back in his hometown.

The love-sick man allegedly cut his neck with a knife while at his accommodation after he received information recently that his girlfriend got married to another man.

1.8 tonnes of rotten meat seized; suspect on the run

Dubai, February 03: The Deira Prosecution has launched a probe after 1.8 tonnes of expired meat bearing validity stickers were seized last week.

Deira Chief Prosecutor Youssef Foulaz said on Wednesday that the meat was about to be distributed in the market .

“The stickers were changed to show that the meat was fit for consumption. There are five suspects including the main one who is at large,” Foulaz said.

Male worker, woman stand trial over human trafficking

Dubai, February 03: A male worker and an unemployed woman stood trial in the Court of First Instance on Wednesday on the charges of human trafficking and illegal confinement.

The two, both Bangladeshis, allegedly forced two women into prostitution.

Acording to the prosecution records, the two defendants lured two compatriot women to the UAE with the offer of jobs as maids. Once they arrived here, the defendants seized their passports and visas and held them up in an apartment at Naif in Deira.

Pak court defers hearing of Punjab Governor’s killer

Islamabad, February 03: A Pakistani court on Wednesday deferred the indictment of the police guard who assassinated Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer last month as the prosecution could not provide some documents to defence lawyers.

Mumtaz Qadri has confessed that he shot and killed Taseer on January 4 because he was angered by the politician’s opposition to the blasphemy law.

Qadri’s indictment could not take place as planned since the prosecution had not provided his lawyers with some police statements.

Sensex weak in early trade

Mumbai, February 03: A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Thursday was ruling weak in early trade.The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,113.73 points, was ruling at 18,121.68 points, up 31.06 points or 0.17 percent from its previous close at 18,090.62 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange too was in a slump, trading 0.06 percent up at 5,435.4 points.

Broader markets were ruling flat too.

212 more Indians return from Egypt

Mumbai, February 03: A third batch of 212 Indians stranded in Egypt, which is in the midst of a political upheaval, arrived here early Thursday in a special flight.Air India flight AI-160 landed with the Indians at 5.30 a.m., an official said.

This is the third flight to Mumbai in Air India’s efforts to bring back the Indians stuck in Egypt.

Earlier this week, two flights carrying 320 and 280 passengers respectively arrived in this city.

Air India flew a Boeing 747-400 from Mumbai to Cairo to bring the stranded Indians late Wednesday.

Exercise cuts genetic obesity by 40%

London,February 03: Physical exercise can reduce a genetic predisposition to obesity by an average of 40 per cent, a new study showed.

The research challenges the notion that an inherited propensity to obesity is impossible to overcome and boosts the case for the benefit of more exercise for anyone looking to shed some weight.

The study, published in this week’s Public Library of American Science Medicine journal, is based on examination of 20,430 people living in Norwich, Britain.

Oslo, February 03: A Norwegian politician nominated the whistle-blower site WikiLeaks for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, news agency NTB reported Wednesday.

Snorre Valen, a representative of Norway’s Socialist Left Party, highlighted the work of WikiLeaks in exposing classified documents and promoting freedom of speech and transparency.

Valen emphasized the role the website played in the Tunisian uprising after disclosing the assets of Tunisia’s former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
