IT searches homes, offices of TDP MP

Hyderabad, February 04: Income Tax officials Friday searched the homes and offices of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Nama Nageswara Rao across several cities including Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi and Hyderabad.

Suspecting tax evasion, IT sleuths conducted simultaneous searches at the residences and premises of the companies owned by Rao at Khammam and in major Indian cities. The searches, which began in the morning, were still on.

UPA not in favour of Telangana?

Hyderabad, February 04: Differences of opinion exist among the Telangana Congress leaders on the proposed alliance between the Congress and Praja Rajyam Party. Some of them view that it was an indication that the UPA government was not in favour of separate Telangana state, while others opine that the party leadership would want to strengthen the Congress in Seemandhra under the leadership of Chiranjeevi once Telangana state is formed.

Teacher sets herself on fire

Hyderabad, February 04: A private school teacher succumbed to burns under the Begumpet police station limits.

According to Sub inspector S Santosham, the victim has been identified as Kalyani (30), wife of Ramesh and a resident of Balamrai, Secunderabad.

Unable to bear stomach pain, on Wednesday, Kalyani poured kerosene on her body and set a fire. She died while undergoing treatment in hospital late on Wednesday night.

Police registered a case under Section 174 CRPC and the body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem.

Jobless depressed man commits suicide after wife left him

New Delhi, February 04: A man depressed over losing his job and his wife walking out on him, committed suicide in east Delhi Thursday, police said.

Hemant, 23, was found hanging inside his room on the first floor of the house by his landlord who informed police.

Although no suicide note was recovered, police was told by the neighbours and Hemant’s family that he lost his job in a private company three months ago and was probably depressed over it.

Burial of unclaimed Muslim bodies opposed; police disperse local miscreants

Hyderabad, February 4: Tension erupted in Chatrinaka area over burial of unclaimed Muslim bodies when local non Muslim residents opposed the burial and demanded to exhume the bodies and take them away. However the situation was brought under control when police intervened.

Siasat daily has been arranging burial of unclaimed Muslim bodies from in and around Hyderabad for more than past three years.

Corruption dents India’s global image: PM

New Delhi, February 04: Expressing concern over the “menace” of corruption in the wake of a series of scams, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday said it demeans and dents India’s image.

“Corruption strikes at the roots of good governance. It is an impediment to faster growth. It dilutes, if not negates, our efforts at social inclusion. It dents our international image and it demeans us before our own people,” Manmohan Singh said, addressing the second annual conference of chief secretaries of states here.

Flash floods kill 5 in SE Iran

Tehran, February 04: At least five people have been killed as a result of flash floods that have inundated parts of Iran’s southeastern province of Kerman, reports say.

“Floods in different parts of the province have so far left five killed in the towns of Sirjan, Roudbar and Kahnouj,” Mehr news agency quoted Kavous Mahmoudi, the head of Kerman Red Crescent Society as saying on Thursday.

Mahmoudi said that the recent rains and consequent flooding are threatening to overwhelm a number of villages in the region.

US writers, poets hold anti-war vigil

The White House vigil on Thursday was sponsored by the Institute for Policy Studies and Split This Rock and included 16 minutes of silence in representation of every year of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, Press TV correspondent reported.

Boss Tried To Rape Me, Says Executive

New Delhi, February 04: A 27-year-old woman executive of South Delhi-based multimedia company has accused her boss of attempt to rape and has lodged a police complaint.

In her complaint to the Sadar Police Station, the woman executive alleged that the chief operating officer (COO) of the company in which she works as a project manager, came to drop her at her Gurgaon house after an office party in Saket on January 20. She said her boss then tried to rape her.

The police said the COO is based in Mumbai and a team has been sent to trace and question him.

Three killed, 27 injured in Pak blast

Lahore, February 04: A bomb went off at a Sufi shrine in the old quarters of this eastern Pakistani city on Friday, killing three persons and injuring 27 more, an official spokesman said.

A large number of people had gathered at the ‘langar’ or community kitchen of the Baba Haider Saeen shrine near the historic Lahore Fort when the explosion occurred at its entrance late tonight.

The explosive device was planted near the shrine, state-run Rescue 1122 service spokesman Fahim Jehanzeb said.

“Two persons were killed and 27 others were injured, five of them seriously,” he said.

VC’s Irregularities: AMU Court Member Wants CBI Probe

New Delhi, February 04: An Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) court member has demanded a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities committed by the varsity’s Vice Chancellor P K Abdul Aziz since he assumed office.

“The inquiry should probe into all aspects of financial irregularities and administrative impropriety committed by the VC over the years since he assumed office in 2007,” demanded AMU Court member and former MP Wasim Ahmad.

He said members of the court would soon meet the President, the Prime Minister and the HRD Minister to press for a CBI probe.

US-led troops kill Pakistani soldier

Waziristan, February 04: The US-led NATO soldiers have killed a Pakistani soldier in a clash near the country’s border with Afghanistan, a report says.

The exchange of fire broke out when NATO troops fired three mortar shells inside Pakistan at Tehsil Ghulam Khan of North Waziristan tribal region early Thursday, a Media correspondent reported.

Pakistani security forces responded with heavy weapons and clashes continued into late Thursday but no further casualties were reported.

Pakistani military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas has confirmed the clashes in North Waziristan.

VHP against dams across Ganga: Togadia

Chennai, February 04: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad said it would oppose any attempt to build dams on the Ganga between Gangotri and Ganga Sagar.

“Ganga’s flow should be uninterrupted. We oppose any type of dam between Gangotri and Ganga Sagar. (We also oppose) any type of pollution in Ganga, such as effluents from industries,”VHP International General Secretary Pravin Togadia told reporters here.

He claimed that sustained opposition by VHP against attempts to pollute the river has improved the situation.

US senators urge Germany to stop EIH from supporting Iran

Washington, February 04: Nine influential US Senators have urged Germany to stop Hamburg-based bank Europäisch-Iranische Handelsbank from routing funds that could be used to support Iran’s nuclear programme, warning that all entities doing so will be debarred from the US financial system.

EIH was sanctioned by the United States in September, 2010, for its facilitation of Iran’s proliferation activities.

NABARD sanctions loan of Rs 222 crore to AP

Hyderabad, February 04:) NABARD, the apex bank for agriculture and rural development, today announced that it has sanctioned a loan of Rs 222.71 crore to Andhra Pradesh for the implementation of 22 micro irrigation projects.

These projects will be implemented by the Department of Horticulture.

Out of the total outlay of 521.59 crore, the balance will be met by the state government.The micro irrigation projects will benefit an area of 119,600 hectares through adoption of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.

Chidambaram, Omar agree to push Kashmir peace roadmap

Jammu, February 04: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday and the two agreed to draw up a roadmap for lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir. The former then reviewed the security situation in Kishtwar.

Abdullah hosted an hour-long breakfast meeting with the visiting home minister who is on a two-day visit to the state from Thursday.

Both Chidambaram and Abdullah, who have been advocating an “out of the box solution” for Kashmir and also back efforts of the three interlocutors on Kashmir, had a candid exchange of views, sources said.

TRS threatens to block NH, demand aid for weavers

Hyderabad, February 04: Yesterday TRS threatened to block the busy Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway on February 9 if the Andhra Pradesh Government failed to release Rs 312 crore for the welfare of weavers.

The highway would be blocked for about 140 kms from Kothagudem in Ranga Reddy district here to Kodada in Nalgonda district, TRS Politburo member Jagadishwar Reddy told reporters here.

Over two lakh people would take part in the protest and the vehicles coming from Vijayawada in coastal Andhra will have to take an alternative route, he said.
