Siliguri, October 29: A Girl commits suicide after obscene video blackmailed incident of her and circulated as an MMS.

A polytechnic student in Siliguri committed suicide after she was being blackmailed by a college mate who shot an obscene video of her and circulated it as an MMS, police said on Friday.

The girl, studying in first-year, had lodged an FIR on September 18 with the Siliguri police, claiming that her senior Aninda Garai took her to a private boarding, where he stayed, for helping her with some drawings.

US dollar ends cheaper against rupee

Mumbai, October 29: Rupee ends cheaper against dollar at Rs 44.43/44 per.

The US dollar ended cheaper against the rupee at Rs 44.43/44 per dollar, but the Pound Sterling turned higher at Rs 70.79/81 per pound at the close of the Interbank Foreign Exchange Market (Forex) here on Friday.

Snapping its three-day losing string, the rupee recovered by 10 paise against the US currency following late rise in equities and dollar selling by exporters.

Fresh capital outflows, however, restricted some of the gains in rupee, dealers said.

Farmers stop trains in Punjab

Punjab, October 29: Farmers in Punjab blocked railway traffic at nearly half a dozen places to protest against slow lifting of paddy crop.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal warned the central government of unrest if procurement norms were not relaxed immediately.

The farmers, who had called for a railway and road blockade on Friday (Oct 29), are seeking relaxation of moisture and colour norms for procurement of their paddy and also a higher minimum support price (MSP).

Mauritania chooses ‘offensive’ strategy against Al-Qaeda

Nouakachott, October 29: Mauritania’s Defence Minister Hamadi Ould Hamadi said Wednesday his country has opted for an “offensive” strategy against al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) militants.

“We have deliberately opted for an offensive and dynamic strategy to prevent the formation of operational bases directed against our country” by elements of AQIM based in northern Mali, Hamadi told journalists on the sidelines of a forum on terrorism in Nouakchott.

Turkish group slams Israeli praise of Gaza boat raid

Ankara, October 29: A Turkish rights group denounced Wednesday the praises showered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the naval commandos whose raid on a Gaza-bound aid boat killed nine Turks.

“Netanyahu’s insolence has no limits,” Bulent Yildirim, head of the Islamic charity IHH (Foundation of Humanitarian Relief), which owned the boat in question.

“Killing innocent and defenceless people is not heroic,” he added.

MI6 chief: spying crucial to stopping Iran nuclear drive

London, October 29: Diplomacy is not enough to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons, the head of Britain’s foreign spy service said Thursday, urging an “intelligence-led” approach to stopping nuclear proliferation.

In an unprecedented public speech, MI6 chief John Sawers said that intelligence activities were responsible for Iran’s admission last year of a second enrichment plant, which in turn led to tougher diplomatic pressure.

Anger in Israel at huge government aid to religious students

Jerusalem, October 29: Thousands of Israeli university students demonstrated across the country on Wednesday to protest against government plans to pay millions of shekels in stipends to full-time religious students.

Simultaneous demonstrations took place in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as well as in Galilee, in the northern port city of Haifa and in Beersheva in the southern Negev desert, police said.

The protests were coordinated to denounce government plans to approve living stipends for ultra-Orthodox Yeshiva students as part of the state budget for the next two years.

Washington, October 29: The United States condemned “in the strongest possible terms” an attack on staffers of a UN court investigation the 2005 killing of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri in Beirut on Wednesday.

A security source earlier told AFP a group of angry women charged at two male investigators and their female translator who were on a scheduled appointment at a Beirut clinic, shouting insults at them, and managed to wrangle a briefcase from them.

Emir of Qatar meets Prince Charles on Britain visit

London, October 29: The emir of Qatar met Prince Charles on Wednesday on the second day of a state visit to Britain aimed at strengthening ties and boosting trade between the countries.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani held talks with Charles, the 61-year-old heir to the British throne, at his London residence Clarence House during the three-day trip.

The meeting followed recent controversy over links between the pair after it emerged that Charles lobbied the emir to change a major London building development plan, sparking accusations of abuse of power.

Suspected Qaeda chief surrenders in Yemen

Aden, October 29: A suspected Al-Qaeda commander in the southern Yemen province of Abyan has surrendered to the authorities after negotiations conducted by tribal leaders, a security official said on Thursday.

“Jamal Ahmed Mairan, leader of Al-Qaeda in Loder and Modia (towns) handed himself in on Wednesday after mediation by tribal authorities,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

UAE recognises new ruler of strategic northern emirate

Ras Al-Khaimah, October 29: Sheikh Saud bin Saqr al-Qassimi will succeed his father, who died on Wednesday, as ruler of the tiny but strategic emirate of Ras al-Khaimah.

Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed al-Qassimi, 92, died in Ras al-Khaimah, the official WAM news agency of the United Arab Emirates reported earlier.

In official recognition of Sheikh Saud’s succession to the post of emir, the UAE’s Federal Supreme Council “expressed its full support for Sheikh Saud as ruler of Ras al-Khaimah,” in a statement carried by WAM.

Centre should clarify its stand on Omar’s remark: Advani

Banka (Bihar), October 29: Senior BJP leader L K Advani today questioned the Centre’s “silence” over Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s remark earlier this month that his state had acceded to India and not merged with it.

“Omar’s statement is objectionable and is not in the national interest…it smacks of anti-national activity,” Advani told an election meeting here.

“Congress should clarify its stand instead of maintaining silence over it,” Advani said.

‘Mission: Impossible 4’ to be shot on Burj Khalifa tower

London, October 29: The fourth installment of Tom Cruise starrer “Mission Impossible 4” will be shot at the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai.

The scenes will be shot around Dubai and some of the action will take place in and on the Burj Khalifa tower, which stands at 828m (2,717ft) tall, reports metro.co.uk.

“To be shooting here, it’s a city I’ve always wanted to shoot in,” said Cruise.

The filming will also take place in Moscow, Prague and Vancouver.

CM directs AP Genco to make the state self-sufficient

Hyderabad, October 29: The Chief Minister K Rosaiah held a review meet with officials of AP Genco and directed them to work on a comprehensive action plan to see that Andhra Pradesh becomes self-sufficient in energy by 2014.

AP Genco Projects were reviewed in the meeting.

The APGenco officials assured the Chief Minister that 2,800 MW power will be added by 2012-13 through commissioning of various projects in the State.

Hamas to Israel: Think twice before war

Gaza, October 29: A senior member of the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas says Israel will pay the price in case of another offensive against the Gaza Strip.

“If Israel tries to enter Gaza, it will cost it a lot and it won’t be able to achieve its goals,” Mahmoud al-Zahar said from Gaza on Thursday.

“If Israel carries out another war in the future, it should think thousand of times before carrying out a war,” he noted.
