Gold drops further on profit-taking, silver also slips

Mumbai, October 01: Gold declined further at the bullion mark here today on sustained selling by stockists and speculators despite prices ruling firm at the global level.

Silver, after touching a fresh all-time high yesterday, also encountered profit-taking to close lower.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) dropped by Rs 55 per ten grams to end at Rs 19,095 from overnight closing level of Rs 19,150.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also fell by a similar margin to finish at Rs 19,185, as against Rs 19,240 yesterday.

Government extends ban on bulk SMSes till Oct 4

New Delhi, October 01: The government today extended till October 4, the ban on bulk SMSes and MMSes to check any propaganda post the verdict on the Ayodhya title suit case.

“We have decided to extend the ban till October 4 in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs,” a senior DoT official told PTI.

The Allahabad High Court yesterday ruled that the 2.77 acre disputed land in Ayodhya be divided into three parts among Hindus and Muslims, and held that the place where the makeshift temple of Lord Rama currently exists belongs to Hindus.

New Delhi, October 01: India on Friday strongly rejected Pakistan’s allegation that it was sponsoring terrorism in South Asia, with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna terming it as “unacceptable”.

“We have rejected it. This is totally unacceptable,” Krishna told PTI as he left New York after attending the opening session of the General Assembly.

“The track record of India speaks so eloquently,” he said, adding, “We don’t need to defend our position.”

Kolkata, October 01: Global auto major Tata Motors Friday increased prices of some of its vehicles due to increase in input costs, a company statement said here.

“The prices of Tata Indica and Tata Indigo have been hiked from Rs.4,500 to Rs.14,000, depending upon the model,” it said.

In utility vehicles, the prices of Tata Sumo and Tata Grande MK II have been increased from Rs.7,800 to Rs.10,300.

The price rise in commercial vehicle is in the range of Rs.5,000 to Rs. 40,000, the statement said.

Patna, October 01: A day after the Ayodhya verdict was pronounced, Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) gave an assembly ticket to the daughter of diplomat-turned-politician Syed Shahabuddin — the man who championed the cause of Babri Masjid for Muslims.

The JD-U has given a ticket to Parveen Amanullah, in her late 40s, to contest from Sahebpur Kamal, a Muslim-dominated constituency in Begusarai district, about 125 km from here.

The JD-U is contesting the October-November assembly polls in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
