ASI report far from foolproof?

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad HC may have gone by the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) report submitted to it in April 2003 to rule that the disputed site is the birthplace of Ram but noted historians had drilled holes in the report when it first came out.

Though the ASI report refrained from giving a clear verdict on the existence of a temple, use of words like “interesting” and “significant” in crucial places and the body of evidence that it gave pointed to the existence of a temple.

A team of scientists, headed by Daniel F. Kripke, professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, US revisited original research conducted between 1995 and 1999.

In the previous study, part of the Women’s Health Initiative, Kripke and colleagues had monitored 459 women living in San Diego (aged from 50 to 81 years).

Lucknow, October 01: Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav Friday hit out at the judgement in the age-old Ayodhya dispute, saying it was hardly based on legalities.

“The verdict appears to be have been given more on the basis of faith and belief rather than on the basis of legalities and evidence,” the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister told reporters here.

“I am firmly of the view that the court has somehow ignored or overlooked various legal issues and relied more on the faith and belief of people. This is not how a court should have acted,” said Mulayam Yadav.

Ahmedabad, October 01: Gujarat CM Narendra Modi welcomed the Ayodhya verdict, saying it lends constitutional credence to the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site.

“This verdict paves way for the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple… Construction of a Ram temple there now becomes a duty.”

He sought public resolve for the temple’s construction. “I believe there should be no feeling of victory or loss… it is laudatory for country’s unity and pride. The result should be accepted forgetting past conflicts.”
