Jagan an ‘ant’ before High Command: Shankar Rao

Hyderabad, September 02: Secunderabad Cantonment MLA P Shankara Rao on Wednesday described the Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy as an ‘ant’ before the High Command.

Talking to media persons at the Media Point on the Assembly premises, Mr Shankar Rao alleged that Kadapa MP, in the name of consoling families and providing them financial support through is Odarpu Yatra, is attempting to showcase his popularity by mobilizing people in the Yatra.

Stone laid for Kadapa-Bangalore railway line

Kadapa, September 02: Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa on Wednesday attributed the relentless efforts of former chief minister late YS Rajasekhara Reddy to get the sanction for the Kadapa-Bangalore new railway line.

Laying the foundation stone for one of the largest projects on South Central Railway, the Kadapa-Bangalore new Railway line, at the Kadapa Railway Station, Mr Muniyappa said that the new Railway Line will reduce the distance considerably between Kadapa and the Silicon City of Bangalore.

Fever forces CM to skip Mannavaram foundation stone laying ceremony

Hyderabad, September 02: Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Wednesday was forced to cancel his trip to Tirupati on account of being indisposed.

According to sources in the Chief Minister’s Office, Mr Rosaiah was scheduled to participate in the foundation stone laying ceremony of BHEL-NTPC power equipment manufacturing joint venture project. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Mannavaram near Srikalahasthi in Chittoor district on Wednesday.

Mr Rosaiah’s personal doctors advised him from making the trip to Tirupati since he is suffering from fever.

PM lays foundation stone for Mannavaram project

Tirupati, September 02: Laying the foundation stone for much awaited Rs 6,000 crore power equipment manufacturing plant project, a joint venture between the BHEL-NTPC at Mannavaram near Tirupati in Chittoor district on Wednesday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh lauded the services of former chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to the state.

Talking to reporters, he said “I am happy to lay foundation stone for the project a day before the first death anniversary of YSR who played key role bringing the project to the State.”

Sweden reopens WikiLeaks founder rape investigation

Sweden, September 02: Sweden reopened a probe on Wednesday into rape allegations against Julian Assange, the founder of whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, who has infuriated the U.S. military by publishing secret documents on Afghanistan.

Assange called the rape allegations baseless and described the case against him as a “legal circus”.

WikiLeaks published more than 70,000 secret military files on Afghanistan in July in what U.S. officials have called one of the biggest security breaches in U.S. military history.

US Open: Sania Mirza’s run ends in women’s singles

New York, September 02: India’s Sania Mirza failed to get the measure of Russian teenager Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, losing 2-6, 4-6 in the second round of the US Open here Wednesday.

With Sania’s loss, India’s challenge in the singles is over, with Somdev Devvarman already crashing out of the first round against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the men’s event.

Sania was outplayed in the first set by the 20th-seeded Russian. She fought back in the second and was tied 4-4 before she dropped her serve.

US Muslims call for more protection amid mosque controversy

Washington, September 02: US Muslim leaders called Wednesday for more protection from law enforcement amid what they described as a wave of “Islamiphobia” over plans to build an Islamic centre and mosque near the site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“We ask for extra protection of the Muslim community,” said Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). “We call on local state and federal authorities to provide extra protection for the Muslim community in the next days and weeks based on the kind of hysteria that was seen.”

Rubabuddin charges Modi with contempt of apex court

Gandhinagar, September 02: Rubabuddin Sheikh, the brother of staged-shootout victim Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Wednesday served a legal notice on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi charging him with contempt of the Supreme Court with his derogatory remarks against the CBI that is probing the case.

The notice dated Aug 28 sought a response within a week whereafter he would take “appropriate action” in the matter.

Answers ready for Pakistan’s queries on Headley: Chidambaram

New Delhi, September 02: India will send its answers in a day or two to Pakistan on its queries about Pakistani American David Coleman Headley’s visits to Indian cities prior to the 2008 Mumbai attack, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Wednesday.

“They gave a dossier on David Headley. We have furnished answers. The answers are being given to the ministry of external affairs and I am sure they will hand over the answers to Pakistan high commission either today or tomorrow,” Chidambaram told reporters here.

28 killed as serial blasts rock Lahore

Islamabad, September 02: : Three blasts rocked Lahore on Wednesday evening, killing 28 people and injuring 150.

The blasts, reports say, were aimed at a Shia procession comprising hundreds of people that gather in the walled city of Lahore during the holy month of Ramzaan.

The first blast took place around 6.50 pm, killing at least seven persons and injuring hundreds.

The second blast, which is reportedly a suicide attack, took place about 25 minutes later near the site of the first blast, killing at least three persons, including a policeman, and injuring some 20 others.

I stand by ‘saffron terror’ remark, says Chidambaram

New Delhi, September 02: Despite the Congress distancing itself from his ‘saffron terror’ remark, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday stood by it, saying there was no difference between the party and the government.

“I do not claim patent on the phrase ‘saffron’. It has been used by a number of other persons, including my colleagues in the UPA,” he said responding to questions, seeking a clarification on his remark made at the recent annual conference of State police chiefs and top police officials.

YSR, a great leader from Andhra Pradesh: PM

Tirupati, September 01: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today hailed the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy as a “great leader from Andhra Pradesh”, in an apparent bid to mollify his defiant son Jagan from taking out a yatra despite warning from Congress high command.

“Let me once again remember a great leader from Andhra Pradesh and his love and concern for his people. Tomorrow will be his first death anniversary,” Singh said.

Obama convenes Mideast peace talks

Washington, September 01: US President Barack Obama met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the first of a series of meetings Wednesday with leaders from the Middle East as he relaunches the peace process.

Netanyahu arrived at the White House for the private meeting with Obama that precedes separate Obama meetings with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak.

Obama is expected to deliver a statement following the meetings and host a working dinner for the leaders Wednesday night.

Three die in UP floods, rain returns to Delhi

Lucknow, September 01: Three persons died in floods in Uttar Pradesh where all major rivers have crossed the danger mark, as rains today drenched Chandigarh and the national capital after three days.

Two children died in UP’s Gonda district as one-and-a- half-km breach in Charsari embankment in Parsawal left about 86 villages inundated by flood waters. Another person died in a roof collapse in Azamgarh last night.

“A national rapid response team has been deployed to carry out relief and rescue work in 24 villages,” District Magistrate Madhukar Dwiwedi said.

Saffron terror: Digvijay Singh differs with Chidambaram

New Delhi, September 01: Sparring continued within Congress over “saffron terrorism” with Home Minister P Chidambaram today maintaining that his use of the phrase brought home the message of right-wing terror and senior leader Digvijay Singh saying he has objection to such words.

Days after Congress party distanced itself from his remarks on saffron terror, Chidambaram said the party was supreme and he had no patent on the phrase–saffron terrorism — which has been used by two of his colleagues in UPA.

PM had only N-bill on agenda during session: Yechury

New Delhi, September 01: Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury today said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had only one agenda during the Monsoon session — to get the civil nuclear liability bill passed.

“We are not questioning the Prime Minister’s credibility.

It is about his intentions,” Yechury said.

He said there was just one agenda in the entire session and that was nuclear liability bill.

“His aim was to get the bill passed before (US) President Barack Obama comes to India,” he said.

AP govt to organise functions in memory of YSR

Hyderabad, September 01: Late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s first death anniversary will be observed across Andhra Pradesh tomorrow with the state government organising a series of functions in memory of the Congress leader.

State Chief Minister K Rosaiah would unveil a 20-ft-long statue at the ?YSR Smriti Vanam? (memorial garden) near the crash site at Pavuralagutta in Kurnool district which was being built in an area of 3,500 acres.

The garden would have a bio-diversity park, a butterfly park and deer park.

TRS to adopt Gandhian way to achieve Telangana state

Hyderabad, September 01: The TRS today said a “non- cooperation movement in the Gandhian way” would be launched to put pressure on the Centre towards granting statehood to Telangana after the Srikrishna Committee submits its report by this year-end.

“Since the Centre has appointed the Srikrishna Committee, we have given a report to it. We waited for so many years and we thought we could wait for some more time. We hope a positive outcome would come after the committee submits report by December 31,” TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao told a gathering at the party office here.

Washington, September 01: He claims that he quickly realised the implications of the suicide bombers crashing aircraft into the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, having heard the news while preparing to deliver a speech to the TUC in Brighton.

Mr Blair says he understood the new war was ideological, but admits that at the time he did not fully understand the history of Islam. He admits he underestimated the “hold of this extremism”.

Only the future will tell if it would have been better to fight the war using military intervention or “soft power”.

Blood of murdered Israelis will not go unpunished: Netanyahu

Washington, September 01: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the “blood of Israeli civilians” would not go unpunished as he vowed to hunt the killers of four Israelis near a Jewish West Bank settlement.

“We witnessed today a savage murder of four innocent Israelis,” Netanyahu said in Washington yesterday, where he was due to resume direct peace negotiations with the Palestinians tomorrow for the first time since December 2008.
