AP bypolls: TRS wins five seats, leading in six

Hyderabad, July 30: Riding on the Telangana sentiment, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) swept the assembly by-elections in the region, winning five seats and leading in six other constituencies Friday. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ahead in the remaining one seat.

Proving that the Telangana sentiment is still strong, TRS retained Siddipet, Sirpur, Dharmapuri and Chennur seats with huge majority and wrested Vemulawada seat from Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Salman Khan in trouble again!!!

Mumbai, July 30: Bollywood macho hunk and the man with a heart bigger than his biceps is in news again for a wrong reason. But this time it wasn’t his fault. Yes! We are talking about none other that Salman Khan. He has earned the ire of the Shiv Sena.

The reason: Salman appeared in a TV ad for a chewing gum. In the same ad, a cow was ill represented. Shiv sena took umbrage at this, as the Cow is considered sacred by orthodox Hindus.

The activists burnt the actor’s posters and effigies in Amritsar as a mark of protest.

Andhra Pradesh Congress chief loses by-election

Hyderabad, July 30: The ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh Friday suffered a major setback with its state unit chief D. Srinivas losing the assembly by-election.

In a repeat of the 2009 result, Srinivas was defeated by BJP’s A. Lakshminarayana by a margin of 12,200 votes in Nizamabad Urban constituency.

The result has come as a big jolt to Srinivas, who was planning to join the state cabinet and was even emerging as a possible successor to Chief Minister K. Rosaiah.

The state Congress president lost in the 2009 elections by 11,015 votes.

Hari Masjid firing case: SC directs CBI to go ahead with probe

New Delhi, July 30: The Supreme Court today directed the CBI to go ahead with its investigation into the Hari Masjid firing in Mumbai in which six persons were killed in 1992.A bench comprising Justices P Sathasivam and A R Dave upheld the Bombay High Court order entrusting CBI with the probe of the incident.

The bench dismissed the appeal filed by the Maharashtra government against the 2008 direction of the High Court.

Haji’s daughter threatens Balaji

Mum bai, July 30: Mafia don Haji Mastan’s daughter Shamshad Supariwala filed an additional affidavit in a Mumbai court against Balaji Telefilms for making a movie on her father and showing him in an objectionable way.

The movie based on the underworld saga is set to release on July 30, 2010. You may recall that the movie has earlier faced legal trouble from Haji Mastan’s adopted son who filed a suit for an injunction order against the movie’s release.

Copter crash victims back to Israel

Jerusalem, July 30: The bodies of six Israeli soldiers killed during a joint military exercise in central Romania have been flown back to Israel for burial.

The dead bodies of the soldiers arrived at the Tel Nof base on Friday morning, Haaretz reported.

The six soldiers along with one Romanian liaison officer were killed after their CH-53 helicopter crashed on Monday.

The wreckage was found a few hours later in the Fundata-Zarnesti area, near Brasov in central Romania.

Washington, July 30: Google’s services in China were fully or partially blocked on Thursday with the exception of its email service, Gmail.

A Web page maintained by Google on the accessibility to its products in mainland China listed Web search and Google Ads and Google Mobile as “fully blocked” for the first time in weeks.

Karachi, July 30: The Sports Ministry today said it has not received any report from the Pakistan Cricket Board on the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan team in Lahore last year.

The PCB had recently said that it was awaiting clearance from the government before sending the report to the ICC after allegations that the Board was dragging its feet on the issue. Former ICC President Ehsan Mani had said that PCB was not doing any good to the game by delaying the submission of the report.

Most Pakistanis view US as an enemy: Poll

Islamabad, July 30: Despite billions in aid from Washington and a shared threat from extremists, Pakistanis have an overwhelmingly negative view of the United States, according to results of a Pew Research Center poll released on Friday.

The survey also found that Pakistanis have grown less fearful of extremists seizing control of their country, perhaps reflecting gains that government troops have made against militants since early 2009.

ATM guard assaulted over veil

Bangalore, July 30: A woman wearing a black veil walked into an ATM kiosk located at JP Nagar at 9.15 pm. She was asked to take off the veil, by a security guard Kumar before stepping inside the kiosk.

An altercation ensued between the two and the woman started hurling abuses at Kumar.

BP Mallesh, owner of a shop located next to the ATM kiosk, said, “Kumar doesn’t speak much Kannada because he is a Malayali but he can somehow manage to communicate in Kannada. The woman was a north Indian.

Cops tore my clothes

Delhi, July 30: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly beaten, molested and her clothes torn off, while her mother was kicked in the stomach by drunken traffic cops and police constables attached to the Bhalswa Dairy police station on Wednesday night.

Rekha (name changed), along with her mother and father, had gone to inquire about her elder brother who was detained by the police reportedly for violating a traffic rule.

She claimed that apart from assaulting her family, the errant cops did not provide any medical help to her injured brother for more than four hours.

TRS leader Harish Rao wins by record margin

Hyderabad, July 30: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader T. Harish Rao Friday set a record in Andhra Pradesh’s electoral politics by retaining his Siddipet assembly seat in the by-elections by a margin of over 95,000 votes.

He was elected with a margin of 95,858 votes, breaking the record of late former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was re-elected from Pulivendula constituency in Kadapa district last year with a margin of 68,681.

Harish Rao came second in last year’s elections in terms of victory margin with 64,677 votes.

Washington, July 30: A new United States Army report reveals that substance abuse and criminal activity are two central reasons why US soldiers are committing suicide in the Army.

The report, released Thursday at the Pentagon and titled Health Promotion, Risk Reduction, and Suicide Prevention, is the result of a 15-month effort to better understand the alarming increase in suicides, AFP reported.
