Convene all-party meet on Babli: Naidu to Rosaiah

Hyderabad, July 22: TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday appealed to Chief Minister K Rosaiah to convene an all-party meet to discuss the Babli issue, ahead of the proposed meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on July 26.

In a letter to the Chief Minister today, the TDP chief said, “We received the draft note on Babli for ventilating our views. We request you to convene a meeting with all political parties to place our suggestions before the state government.”

$1 Trillion Spent on Wars Since 9/11

Washington, July 22: A Congressional Research Service report on the costs of America’s assorted wars has put the global war on terror since September 11, 2001 at over $1 trillion, making it the second most expensive military action in American history, adjusting for inflation.

The cost of $1.147 trillion was second only to World War 2, which cost $4.1 trillion. It should of course be remembered, however, that the war on terror is not over yet, and that the costs continue to rise dramatically as the wars expand.

More people killed in North Yemen clashes

Yemen, July 22: Media reports say a score of people have been killed in north Yemen as fresh clashes break out between Houthi fighters and army-backed tribes in the troubled region.

“Violent clashes took place overnight between Houthis and Bin Aziz tribes… leaving 20 dead from both sides,” AFP quoted a Yemeni official as saying in Thursday.

Yemeni army forces deployed in the area intervened to break up the fighting, he added.

Contacted by Press TV, a Houthi spokesman, however, denied the death toll, saying only three Shia fighters were killed in the fighting.

Maha govt seeks spl courts for speedy trial of Dalit cases

Mumbai, July 22: To improve the poor conviction rate in atrocity cases against Dalits, Maharashtra government has proposed to set up special courts for quick trial of such cases. “We have proposed to set up special courts to deal with atrocity cases against Dalits and the proposal has been sent to the Law and Judiciary Department for approval,” Home Minister R R Patil informed the Legislative Council today.

Rosaiah Aides demand Naidu to Apologies

Hyderabad, July 22: Strongly objecting to the language used by the TDP Chief, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu, and the party leader, Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy, against the Chief Minister, Mr K Rosaiah, the Group of Ministers on Thursday demanded that Mr Chandrababu Naidu tender an apology to the Telugu community for degrading their value with their questionable “actions and words”.

Sohrabuddin case:Guj Min fails to appear before court

Gandhinagar, July 22: Gujarat’s junior Home Minister Amit Shah, who is close to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was today summoned by the CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case but he failed to appear and has been asked to show up tomorrow for questioning.

It is for the first time that a state minister has been summoned in connection with the alleged fake encounter by Gujarat Police near Ahmedabad in which Sohrabuddin, an alleged gangster, was killed in November 2005.

London, July 22: Hollywood beauty Jennifer Love Hewitt filmed love scenes with 26 different men over a period of two days for her role as a prostitute. The actress who plays a housewife-turned-call girl in the TV movie ”The Client List”, said that the filming left her exhausted, reported Sun online.

“We shot all those scenes in two days and I did 26 lingerie changes and 26 clients in those two days. I was truly a working girl making this movie,” she said.

Mumbai, July 22: Lead actors playing visually challenged characters is not new, but for Deepika Padukone it was a first. She describes it as her toughest role yet but also says she is exactly like the heroine – a woman who is self-confident, ambitious and never gives up.

‘For me, this role out of all the films that I have done was the most challenging. It’s not been easy. It required a lot of focus and concentration. I had to observe a lot of blind people before I could play this role,’ Deepika, 24, told IANS in an interview.

AP police on alert to foil Sena protest on irrigation project

Hyderabad, July 22: Andhra Pradesh police got into an alert mode along the border with Maharashtra as a few hundred Shiv Sena activists planned to cross the border protesting the construction of a lift irrigation project at Salur in Nizamabad district.

Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police R R Girish Kumar spoke to his Maharashtra counterpart and requested him to prevent the Shiv Sainiks from marching into the state.

Mandela’s daughter, grandchildren attacked after his birthday party

Cape Town, July 22: A daughter and some of the grandchildren of former South African president Nelson Mandela were attacked by gunmen in Johannesburg as they returned home from a weekend birthday party for the 92-year-old statesman, police confirmed Thursday.

Zindzi Mandela and her children were approached by the two armed strangers in the driveway of their home early Sunday evening, according to police spokesman Govindsamy Mariemuthoo.

The award is bestowed every year on a person who has strived for the well being and progress of the society and the nation, the trust president Deepak Tilak told a press conference here.

The award ceremony will take place on August 1, coinciding with Lokmanya Tilak’s 89th death anniversary, he said.

Mumbai, July 22: Dimple Jhangiani, who plays Sandhya in Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat, is not keeping well these days. We hear that she is down with viral fever.

As per the sources she was not keeping well since a long time and now has eventually has been hospitalised. Doctors have advised her to take rest for some more time, but knowing the shooting schedules, she might have to return soon on the sets.

Otherwise, the new twist in the serial has to be introduced so as to shift the focus from her character.

Mosquito flies into TV news, chokes anchor

Taipei, July 22: A Taiwanese television presenter was hospitalised after a mosquito flew into her mouth, choking her and interrupting her live broadcast of a news programme.

The mosquito got so deep into Huang Ching’s mouth that it was stuck in her windpipe, touching off severe asthma, China Times media group said on Wednesday.

China Television Co had to urgently put on a four-minute advert while it drafted in a replacement presenter to carry on with the news.
