Anjaana Anjaani revolves around two people who meet under weird circumstances and fall in love. Shot in New York and Vegas the film will also see Ranbir dressed up as a superhero and Santa Claus.

Mumbai, July 23: Bollywood perfectionist actor Aamir Khan has made it to the top in the Filmfare Power List for the consecutive third time. Beating his close competitor superstar Shahrukh Khan, Aamir has retained his top position of last year.

The last three films of Aamir, which includes 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 2009 super-hit 3 Idiots, garnered about Rs 825 crore. Aamir has managed to be on top with this huge success. His film 3 Idiots earned more than Rs 375 crore, which is the biggest hit in the history of Bollywood so far.

PFI a blot on Muslims in Kerala: IUML MP

New Delhi, July 23: Denouncing a radical Muslim group in Kerala as a blot on Muslims, a senior leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has urged young Muslims to stay away from such “anti-Islamic outfits”.

ET Mohammed Basheer, a Lok Sabha member, came out strongly against the Popular Front of India (PFI), whose activists have been accused of chopping off one of the hands of a college professor for allegedly making derogatory references to Prophet Mohammed.

The PFI, which enjoys wide support in Kerala, has denied the charge.

Akshay, Twinkle to trek in Jammu

Mumbai, July 23: Shilpa Shetty, who is holidaying in France fulfilled a long cherished dream of going up the Eiffel Tower and getting a bird’s eye-view of Paris.

The actress states on a micro-blogging site, “Been to Paris many times but have never been up the Eiffel Tower, always wanted to visit it with my husband… so going up.”

While on vacation, the actress is also learning golf.

“Took my first golf lesson (always wanted to)… left my marks out there, yikes! Nearly killed a duck.”

And she is calling herself Tigress Woods, while she’s at it.

Samajwadi Party leader shot dead in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, July 23: Samajwadi Party leader Anil Yadav, who was also the manager of a college, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, police said Friday.

Yadav, 34, was shot dead late Thursday while he was returning home after meeting some of his friends on the outskirts of the district.

‘Though we are yet to ascertain the motive behind the crime, it appears the incident could be the fallout of political rivalry,’ police inspector Ranjeet Rai told reporters in Ghazipur, some 250 km from Lucknow.

Mumbai, July 23: Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has separated from his wife of 14 years Sangeeta Bijlani, the Mid-Day newspaper from Mumbai reported on Friday.

Azharuddin (47), the tabloid said will be filing for divorce within a week, and that he is currently dating 26-year-old badminton player Jwala Gutta.

Gutta, word No. 7 in mixed doubles, is currently married to India’s top ranked badminton player Chetan Anand, but the couple is said to be estranged.

Amit Shah likely to resign before CBI interrogation

Ahmedabad, July 23: Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s close aide and Gujarat Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, is likely to announce his resignation before his interrogation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Shah will appear before the CBI at around 12:30 pm and is likely to to be arrested. This was stated on condition of anonymity by a top official of the bureau.

Jet Airways plane’s nose wheel collapses while landing

Ahmedabad, July 23: A Jet Airways flight 9W 2510 from Indore to Ahmedabad on Thursday skidded on the runway of Ahmedabad airport due to the nose wheel problem.

The nose wheel of the plane collapsed when the pilot was landing the plane at the runway.

According to the Jet airways, all the passengers and crew members are safe

“All passengers and crew are safe. They have been deplaned and taken to the terminal building where they are being looked after by the Jet Airways staff,” the spokesperson said.

US sanctions on Taliban, Haqqani Network leaders

Washington, July 23: The United States has imposed sanctions on three prominent members of the Taliban and its affiliated Pakistan-based Haqqani Network “for supporting acts of terrorism”.

Those targeted for sanctions by the US Treasury Department Thursday are Gul Agha Ishakzai, the head of the Taliban’s financial commission; Amir Abdullah, former treasurer to senior Taliban leader Mullah Baradar; and Nasiruddin Haqqani.

Andhra Pradesh minister sues MP for defamation

Guntur, July 23: Andhra Pradesh Minister for Heavy industry K Lakshmi Narayana has sent a legal notice to senior Congress MP Rayapati Samba Siva Rao for making unfounded allegation of corruption against the former.

The notice says that Rao has alleged at a press meet that Narayana has amassed wealth by abusing his position as minister. The minister in the notice alleged that Rao was jealous of his growing popularity in Guntur. Narayana has demanded an apology and payment of Rs one crore by way damages from Rao for tarnishing his reputation.

Bangladesh constitution to retain ‘Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim’

Dhaka, July 23: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the phrase “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” would not be excluded from the constitution that will be reviewed by a parliamentary committee formed last Wednesday.

She did not elaborate during her address in parliament Thursday. This would mean that ‘secularism’ will not be restored as one of the basic tenets of the 1972 constitution, political observers said.

Iran wants Iraq to crack down on PEJAK

Tehran, July 23: A senior Iranian commander has called on the Iraqi government to tighten the screws on terrorist groups which use the Iraqi soil to launch attacks on Iran.

“PEJAK terrorist group has managed to mobilize some of its forces and equipments to areas within the Iraqi Kurdistan,” Iranian Border Guard Commander Brigadier General Hossein Zolfaghari was quoted by IRIB as saying on Thursday.

As a result, the commander added, “We have [security] issues on our border with the Iraqi Kurdistan region.”

US transfers 2 Gitmo inmates to Europe

Cuba, July 23: The United States has transferred two detainees of Afghan origin from its notorious prison at Guantanamo Bay to Spain and Latvia.

The transfer was completed as part of efforts to shut the notorious detention center in Cuba, the Pentagon said, Reuters reported.

This is the third of five detainees that Spain has agreed to resettle.

Obama extends unemployment benefits

Washington, July 23: US President Barack Obama has signed a bill to restore unemployment benefits for about 2.5 million jobless Americans, despite fierce opposition by Republicans.

The benefits bill for the long-term unemployed was passed by the US House of Representatives on a vote of 272-152 on Thursday.

The 34-billion-dar bill had cleared the Senate on Wednesday after weeks of debate.

Four inmates escape from Iraqi prison

Baghdad, July 23: Four detainees, awaiting trial on terrorism charges, have broken out of Iraq’s Karkh prison on the outskirts of Baghdad, says the justice ministry.

The four, whose names are withheld, managed to break out of prison with the assistance of the warden, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

The escape was the second of its kind in less than two weeks.

African women slaves wore ‘khangas’ brought from India

Nairobi, July 23: A wraparound known as ‘khanga’ or ‘leso’ in Kenya was imported from India in the 19th century to drape women slaves in East Africa before they were transported to the Middle East, Xinhua has reported.

Interestingly, the attire is not worn in India, where it is being made, because of the enduring stigma of its close association with slave women.

In the 1980s, Kenyan women prided themselves on wearing the attire, as it made a respectable fashion statement, when they would strut around elegantly wrapped in it.
