ITC may shut Wimco unit in Chennai

Kolkata, July 24: ITC may shut down its match box manufacturing unit in Chennai and has given voluntary retirement to all its employees, a top official said here Friday.

‘We are restructuring our matchbox business. We are cutting down on number of plants. We want to outsource it to the small scale sectors. But we want to do it gradually,’ chairman Y.C. Deveshwar told reporters during a press conference.

‘Voluntary retirement has been given to the people and they have all accepted it,’ he said.

Allahabad Bank net up 14.62 percent in Q1

Kolkata, July 24: City-based public sector Allahabad Bank posted a 14.62 percent surge in net profit in the April-June first quarter of the current fiscal to Rs.347 crore from Rs.303 crore during the corresponding period last year, a top official said here Friday.

The bank recorded a 19.29 percent growth in the operating profit in the first quarter. The net interest margin was up by 3.10 percent, said J.P. Dua, the chairman and managing director of the Allahabad Bank.

The bank is also planning to open an office in Dhaka and Shanghai this year.

Manmohan seeks states support on GST implementation

New Delhi, July 24: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday sought the support of states in the government’s efforts to implement a uniform taxation regime on goods and services across the country from the next fiscal.

‘Reform of tax structure and tax administration is another important step in resource mobilisation. The implementation of the the GST (Goods and Services Tax) is especially important in this context and I would urge chief ministers to give full support to the effort to implement GST with effect from April 1, 2011,’ said Singh.

Jet Airways Q1 net profit at Rs.3.52 crore

New Delhi, July 24: India’s largest airline group by domestic market share, Jet Airways, logged a net profit of Rs.3.52 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal due to higher seat sales and growth in passenger traffic as against a loss of Rs.22.53 crore in the like period of 2009-10.

The private-sector group, which operates premium international and domestic airline Jet Airways, low-fare domestic airline Jet Airways Konnect and budget carrier Jetlite, came out with the consolidated results for the first quarter Friday.

Power sector losses unsustainable: PM

New Delhi, July 24: Hinting that hugely subsidised power to farmers was hindering the growth of the energy sector and making it unsustainable, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday urged all chief ministers to give personal attention to problems in the power sector.

‘The total loss (in power sector) 2009-10 is estimated at Rs.40,000 crores. This is simply not sustainable and unless corrected it will make the whole power sector unviable,’ Singh told the 55th National Developmental Council meet here at Vigayn Bhawan.

Must cut dependence on debt, reduce subsidies: PM

New Delhi, July 24: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said the country needed to cut down on its dependence on debt to finance its developmental programmes and find ways to reduce the current level of subsidies.

‘The financing of the plan expenditure has depended far too much on debt. This must change,’ said Manmohan Singh while addressing a meeting of the National Development Council (NDC), the country’s top policy forum.

No open offer for EIH: Deveshwar

Kolkata, July 24: Multi-business conglomerate ITC will not make an open offer for more stakes in East India Hotels (EIH), Chairman Y.C. Deveshwar said here Friday.

The cigarettes-to-hospitality group currently holds 14.98 percent in EIH.

If the holding touches 15 percent, ITC has to approach market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for an open offer, which it would not do, Deveshwar told reporters during a press conference.

IRCTC divested of catering service in trains

New Delhi, July 24: The Railway ministry Friday divested the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation of managing base kitchens and on-board catering under a new a new policy intitiative and decided to run these through the zonal units, which will be accountable for the quality.

Railway Board Chairman Vivek Sahai said as per the Catering Policy 2010, the Indian Railways will overtake the task in phases under its direct control and supervision.

Congress misusing CBI: Modi

New Delhi, July 24: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today alleged that “pick and choose” policy has been followed in the CBI probe against state Home Minister Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and accused the Centre of using the agency as a political weapon.

He also maintained that the minister was “innocent” and a “law-abiding citizen”.

Pakistan register historic win after 15 Years

Leeds, July 24: Pakistan leveled the two-Test match series against Australia at 1-1 after winning by three wickets on Saturday.

Pakistan began a tense morning session at Headingley on 140-3, needing 180 for victory on the fourth day of the second Test.

Ben Hilfenhaus took 3-39 and Doug Bollinger 3-51 as Pakistan lost six wickets for 42 runs, but Umar Gul hit a single in the 51st over for Pakistan to win the match.

Imran Farhat was Pakistan’s top scorer with 67, while Azhar Ali added four to his overnight total, making 51 from 107 balls, with six fours.

Abu Salem attacked in jail by Dawood henchman

Mumbai, July 24: Mafia don Abu Salem, one of the accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case, was attacked Saturday with a sharp instrument inside the Arthur Road Central Jail allegedly by Mohammed Dossa, a member of Dawood Ibrahim’s gang, police said.

Bleeding profusely from the neck and shoulder, Salem was rushed for treatment within the prison premises.

Dossa is said to be a member of absconding mafia don, Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. The attack took place around breakfast in the high security jail precincts.

PCB may not recall Yousuf if team wins at Leeds

Karachi, July 24: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will give up the idea of recalling former captain Mohammad Yousuf for the Test series against England starting later this month if the team went on to win the second Test against Australia at Leeds Saturday.

With seven wickets in hand, Pakistan just need 40 more runs to record a memorable Test victory against Australia. If Pakistan goes on to win the Test and level the two-Test series 1-1, then the PCB will continue showing faith in youngsters instead of bringing back Yousuf.

Arrest warrants against Priety Zinta, Ness Wadia

Chandigarh, July 24: Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab ended up on the wrong side of the law Saturday when a court here issued bailable arrest warrants to its three owners – actress Priety Zinta, industrialist Ness Wadia and businessman Mohit Burman.

The arrest warrants were issued by Chief Judicial Magistrate J.S. Sidhu after the three owners failed to appear before the court in a case against them.

The case against the Kings XI Punjab owners was filed by the Registrar of Companies (ROC) office in April, accusing them of not submitting their balance sheet and returns.

Sohrab case: Gujarat HM goes underground, eludes arrest, CBI on trail

Ahmedabad, July 24: CBI has launched a search for Amit Shah, who today resigned as Gujarat Minister of State for Home after being charged with murder and extortion in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Shah and two other accused in the 2005 case – Yashpal Chudasama and Ajay Patel – have gone underground, sources in the CBI said.

“All three are key accused in the fake encounter case and we are searching for them,” CBI officials told PTI today.

Iran to send man into space by 2019

Tehran, July 24: Iran has plans to launch its first manned mission into the space by 2019, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said.

The president said the project was originally planned to take place in 2035, but it has been preponed in response to the pressure from the US and the West against its nuclear programme, according to Press TV.

“In response to the enemy’s (the United Nations Security Council) resolutions, it was decided that the project be pushed forward by five years,” Ahmadinejad said Friday at the closing ceremony of the National Festival of Iranian Youth.
