Black box of crashed Pakistan plane found

Islamabad, July 31: Pakistani authorities Saturday said they had retrieved the flight recorder of a plane that crashed three days ago near Islamabad, killing 152 people on board.

‘Yes, we have found the black box. It is safe and the data can be retrieved from it,’ Junaid Amin, director-general of civil aviation, said. ‘The cockpit voice recorder of the plane has also been recovered.’

Pakistan’s ISI cancels Britain visit

London, July 31: Talks between Pakistan’s top intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Britain’s security officials have been cancelled after British Prime Minister David Cameron accused Pakistan of ‘exporting terrorism’.

ISI called off the planned talks protesting Cameron’s comments that elements within Pakistan are responsible for exporting terrorism abroad, an ISI spokesman said late Friday.

‘The visit has been cancelled in reaction to the comments made by the British prime minister against Pakistan,’ the spokesman was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Iran quake injures 274; new tremor further south

Tehran, July 31: An earthquake in northeastern Iran injured 274 people on Friday, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported, and a slightly stronger tremor struck central Iran on Saturday.

The first quake with a magnitude of 5.7 hit the city of Torbat-e Heydariyeh, about 700 km (435 miles) east of Tehran, at 6:20 p.m. (1350 GMT) on Friday, and had its epicentre around 7 km from the city.

Many people spent the night outdoors in the city’s parks fearing aftershocks. No deaths were reported.

Violence flares up in Kashmir, five dead

Srinagar, July 31: Violence gripped parts of Kashmir Valley on Saturday as protestors attacked a CRPF patrol party, tried to set a railway station on fire and clashed with security forces who fired to quell the mob, leaving a teenager dead and over 10 others injured.

With the death of the teenager, a total of five persons have been killed since the fresh outbreak of violence yesterday.

In the wake of the protests, authorities imposed indefinite curfew in major towns of the Kashmir Valley.

Women banned from wearing mini-skirts to work

London, July 31: Women in Britain’s offices have been banned from wearing mini-skirts to work, and people involved in “customer-facing roles” have been told to look more professional “in a way that shows respect to children and families”.

Around 400 staff in Southampton City Council’s children’s services department received a memo telling them they should dress respectfully and “carefully consider their work attire”, the Daily Mail reported.

Pregnant women advised to abstain from fasting

Dubai, July 31: Pregnant women are being urged not to fast, especially during the first three months of pregnancy.

Medical experts said babies need more nutrients at this time, which are essential for growth.

Religious injunctions ban the elderly, the ill, women who are pregnant or who are nursing a baby, and children, from fasting during Ramadan.

But Dr Haleema Mohammad, a gynaecologist at Aster Clinic, said many pregnant women wished to fast despite the injunction.

“It’s not advisable, but if they do fast, they should be very careful,” Dr Mohammad said.

Iranian mother facing stoning death pleads to see children

London, July 31: An Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery in Iran pleaded to be allowed to hug her children, in a letter attributed to her released by human rights activists in London on Saturday.

Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was given the sentence after being found guilty.

It sparked an outcry in Western countries, and was temporarily halted earlier this month by Iranian judiciary chief Sadeq Larijani.

TRS wins 11 out of 12 seats in by elections in AP

Hyderabad, July 31: TRS candidates emerged victorious in eleven of the twelve assembly constituencies in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh where the by-polls were held recently and the BJP retained the lone seat held by it.

The TRS nominees won from the five assembly constituencies whose results were announced in the early hours today.

In Huzurabad, TRS candidate E Rajendra defeated his nearest TDP rival by a margin of 55,360 votes. In Koreatla, TRS candidate K Vidyasagar Rao won by a margin of 45,895 votes against his Congress rival J Ratnakar Rao.

Uttar Pradesh BJP leader’s wife murdered

Lucknow, July 31: The wife of a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator was found strangled to death inside her house in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district Saturday, police said.

The body of Revti Singh, wife of Hukum Singh, was found in the morning in the legislator’s residence in the posh Gandhi Colony in Nai Basti area, some 350 km from Lucknow.

Hukum Singh, a senior BJP leader represents Kairana assembly seat in Muzaffarnagar.

Police have ruled out theft or robbery behind the murder as valuables and cash were found intact inside the house.

TRS scores historic victory in Telangana by-polls

Hyderabad, July 31: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), which won all 11 seats it contested in the Telangana by-elections, made history with its massive victory margins.

Four-year-old boy shoots three-year-old girl

New York, July 31: A four-year-old boy in US’ Indianapolis city picked up a gun lying on a kitchen table and fired a shot that killed the three-year-old daughter of his father’s girlfriend.

After finding the .45-calibre handgun, the boy pointed it at the girl’s head and fired, police officer Jeff Duhamell of the Indianapolis metropolitan police said Friday.

The girl’s mother, Fiona Lee, 26, was home at the time of the shooting and was arrested on charges of child neglect and drug intake after officers found cocaine and marijuana in the house, the Adelaide Now reported.

Women torture friend for having sex with ex

London, July 31: Two women in Britain allegedly kidnapped and tortured a friend, scalding her with boiling water and kicking her, after they found out she had sex with one of their ex-boyfriends.

Lucy Viner-Mood, 22, and Lois Gibson, 18, locked Georgia Fenn in a flat in Langton Green in Kent March 28, and assaulted her for over 18 hours till she became unconcious, a court was told. The pair had discovered she had had sex with Viner-Mood’s ex-boyfriend.

CWG mess: PMO intervenes

New Delhi, July 31: Stepping into the Commonwealth Games (CWG) mess, the Prime Minister Office (PMO) has asked Cabinet secretary to review the preparation of all ongoing projects of the mega event scheduled to start from October 3.

The PMO has asked Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekh to review why project deadlines are not being met with just over 60 days to go for the Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, The Cabinet Secretary has written to CWG organising committee and expressed concern over the delayed preparation.

Curfew clamped in Srinagar

Srinagar, July 31: Authorities have clamped curfew in Srinagar on Saturday following Friday’s violent protest in the valley, in which three persons were killed and 50 others injured .

Para-military forces and police personnel were deployed across the valley to prevent violence, sources said.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Friday’s violence in the Kashmir Valley rose to four after another youth succumbed to his injuries here late last night.

Student commits suicide for Telangana

Hyderabad, July 31: Osmania University here was tense Saturday as yet another student committed suicide in the campus, demanding the formation of separate Telangana state.

The charred body of Ishan Reddy, an engineering student, was found near the university library. In his hand-written suicide note found near the body, the student said he was fulfilling his “wish” as all 12 legislators, who had resigned for the cause of Telangana, were re-elected.
