Aamer excited for more success

Islamabad, July 26: Pakistan’s teenage bowling sensation Mohammad Aamer described his stunning Headingley display against Australia as “just a beginning”, saying he had a long way to go at international level.

The 18-year-old took 11 wickets in the two Tests against Australia—including three for 20 and four for 86 in Pakistan’s three-wicket second Test win over Australia completed at Headingley on Saturday.

“It’s a dream come true because I had always wanted to do well against Australia,” left-arm seamer Aamer told AFP after being named Pakistan’s man-of-the-match.

Salman: Deepika Padukone Keen to Work With Him

Mumbai, July 26: Having worked with Shah Rukh Khan in her debut film Om Shanti Om and with Akshay Kumar in the recent box office success Housefull, Deepika Padukone has her eyes set on Salman Khan.

Salman and Deepika featured in the 2009 box office dud Main Aur Mrs Khanna, but Deepika had just a short cameo in the film.

There were rumors that Salman and Deepika would co-star in Kick remake but Deepika clarifies that “those were just rumors.”

“But I’m looking forward to the day I work with him,” adds Deepika.

Show rule that makes women ineligible for army: apex court

New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court Monday asked the defence ministry to produce the Army Act notification that makes women ineligible for permanent commission in the regular army.

When the apex court bench of Justice J.M. Panchal and Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra said that Section 12 of the Army Act, 1950 was in breach of Article 14 of the constitution, Additional Solicitor General Parag Tripathi said the provision was protected by Article 33 of the constitution.

The court then asked the additional solicitor general to produce notification under Section 12 of the Army Act.

Thiruvananthapuram, July 26: Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan incurred the ire of Muslim organisations and political parties for stating that radical outfit Popular Front wanted to turn the state into a Muslim-majority through their communal and divisive activities.

Regardless of their political differences, almost all Muslim organisations, including the mainstream party Indian Union Muslim League, dubbed Achuthanandan’s statement as “dangerous” and meant to “insulting the entire community.”

Cern scientists plan new atom collider

Beijing, July 26: Scientists behind the European atom smasher aimed at uncovering the secrets of the universe want to build an even bigger machine with partners and funds from around the world.

Scientists from CERN – the European Organisation for Nuclear Research – a particle physics laboratory outside Geneva, Switzerland, will spell out their ambitions at a conference in Paris today.

They are reaching out to China, India and Russia to help fund the next £8.5 billion step of the project, according to Guy Wormser, a leading particle physicist and one of the conference organisers.

BP CEO to get US$18m

London, July 26: BP CHIEF Executive Tony Hayward will collect a pay and pension package worth at least 11.8 million pounds (S$24.9 million) when he steps down from his role at the company, media reported.

The Times said Mr Hayward will be giving up 546,000 share options and a maximum of 2 million shares in the company under a long-term incentive plan, now worth an estimated 8 million pounds.

A BP spokesman dismissed the report as ‘rumours,’ adding that Mr Hayward remained chief executive and had full support of the board.

Naidu outwitted by Maharashtra to make him leave

Nanded (Maharashtra), July 26: The Maharashtra government induced Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader N. Chandrababu Naidu and his colleagues to leave the state by claiming to withdraw all cases slapped against them. It now appears only minor cases were withdrawn.

Although Naidu and company finally left – reluctantly and amid a lot of drama – for Hyderabad in a special aircraft from Aurangabad, around 450 km from here, the drama will continue to haunt them for long.

TRS ahead as campaigning ends for by-polls in Telangana

Hyderabad, July 26: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) appears to be ahead of its rivals as campaigning came to an end Sunday for by-elections to 12 assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region scheduled for Tuesday.

Israeli warplanes strike Gaza tunnels, no casualties

Gaza, July 26: Israeli planes fired missiles at two smuggling tunnels near the Gaza Strip border with Egypt early Monday, causing damage but no casualties, officials from the Hamas-run security forces said.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment. Israel has frequently targeted the tunnels in retaliation for rocket fire from the Hamas-ruled coastal enclave.

The impoverished territory of 1.5 million people has largely relied on the vast network of tunnels on the border since Israel and Egypt sealed Gaza off to all but vital aid in 2006 after militants captured an Israeli soldier.

Lucknow, July 26: The right to education act will not interfere with madrasas, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal asserted Sunday.

Replying to questions during a media interaction at the end of a function at the B.R. Ambedkar University here, Sibal said: “It is a misnomer that we have any intention of interfering with the madrasa education”.

Panaji, July 26: Former Goa Tourism Minister Micky Pacheco was today granted bail by a local court in connection with the Nadia Torrado death case. Margao District and Sessions Judge B P Deshpande granted bail to Pacheco, who was admitted to a hospital here last evening after he complained of chest pain, on a Rs 25,000 bond and surety of an equal amount.

US-led helicopter crashes in Kabul

Kabul, July 26: A US-led helicopter has crashed inside the headquarters of the Afghan army in the Afghan capital, Kabul, with no casualties reported.

The copter reportedly crashed Monday morning due to technical problems, a Media Correspondent reported.

The Afghan official sources or the US-led forces based in the country have not yet commented on the incident.

Arrest warrants against Bangladesh Islamists

Dhaka, July 26: A tribunal Monday issued arrest warrants against four top Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leaders on charges of committing “war crimes” during the 1971 liberation movement.

The four, who are the top brass of the country’s largest Islamist party, are arraigned for committing genocide, murder, rape, torture, loot, arson and targeting unarmed civilians during the movement that led to separation from Pakistan.

Mumbai blasts: Final hearings in January

New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court on Monday decided to appeal proceedings against the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convicts from January 11, 2011.

A bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan also issued notices to the convicts on the CBI’s appeal seeking enhancement of punishment for them.

The bench, however, inquired from Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium as to why there was a delay of 880 days in filing the appeal for enhancement of punishment.

Explosion rocks Baghdad’s Green Zone

Baghdad, July 26: A bomb has exploded near the prime minister’s office in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone as the Iraqi capital witnesses a rise in deadly violence.

The incident occurred when a bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle on Monday morning, leaving at least five people wounded, AFP reported.

The blast comes a day after a string of bomb attacks across Baghdad and the northern city of Mosul killed nine people and wounded at least 24 others, security officials said.

US to fund Israel’s Arrow 3 missiles

Washington, July 26: The United States has agreed to fund Israel’s new anti-missile system while discussion is underway on Israeli plans to purchase US-made F-35 stealth fighter jets.

The Israeli defense ministry and the US Missile Defense Agency signed an agreement on Sunday under which Tel Aviv will receive full funding for the development and production of Arrow 3 ballistic missile system, Haaretz reported.

In May 2009, US President Barack Obama’s administration pledged Washington’s would continue support for the Arrow project, as it had done since its launch over 20 years ago.

Muslim jailed for spitting at Israeli police

Occupied Jerusalem, July 26: Muslim leader Sheikh Raed Salah on Sunday began serving five months behind bars after being convicted of spitting at an Israeli policeman during a protest in east Jerusalem.

Around 200 supporters of the Israeli Arab leader accompanied him to a prison in Ramla near Tel Aviv, waving the movement’s green flag as well as Palestinian flags, an AFP reporter said.
