Seven killed in Pakistan suicide blast

Islamabad, July 26: Seven people, including three policemen, were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide bomb attack outside the house of a provincial minister in northwest Pakistan, a media report said Monday.

The blast occurred outside the house of Mian Iftikhar, the information minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, in the Pabbi area of Khan Sher Gharhi, Geo TV reported.

The minister and his family remained unhurt. The attack came after his son Rashid Hussain was killed Saturday.

Six Maoists, one trooper killed in Bengal gunbattle

Goaltore, July 26: Six Maoists, including a top cadre, and a paramilitary trooper were killed in a gunbattle that ensued when security forces raided a rebel hideout in this area in West Midnapore district early Monday, police said.

The clash began at 3 a.m. in Metla forest under the Goaltore police station when the joint security forces – comprising central paramilitary troopers and armed police teams – conducted an operation after receiving a tip-off about the rebels.

‘I haven’t misbehaved with any lifter in my career’

New Delhi, July 26: Suspended coach Ramesh Malhotra today maintained that he never “misbehaved” with women weightlifters during his career and is confident of being “absolved” of sexual harassment charges by the IWF inquiry committee.

Sydney Olympics bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari had alleged that Malhotra had been sexually harassing lifters for more than a decade now but the coach said the charges were “false” and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

Mumbai, July 26: South India actress Trisha Krishnan, who teamed up with Askhay Kumar in “Khatta Meetha”, is upset with the media for trashing the comedy.

“I am a bit net buff and read everything. The reviews were bit disheartening. The reviews have trashed the movie. I don’t know box-office wise, it’s too early to speak, I guess,” Trisha told news agency in an interview.

But she doesn’t regret doing the movie.

“I don’t regret because it’s a baby step in Bollywood and I would not have got a better package. It had a big director, big hero and I am happy with it,” said Trisha.

Right to Education Act not against Muslims

New Delhi, July 26: Dismissing the apprehensions of some Muslim organisations that the Right to Education Bill (RTE) was against the community, minority affairs minister Salman Khurshid today described it as ‘the fear of the unknown’.

“I don’t think it is against Muslims. That can never be the intention of our government. I think, there is a fear of the unknown. It is being speculated that there could be consequences that are detrimental,” Khurshid said.

Senior cop turns approver in Amit Shah case

Ahmedabad, July 26: In a shot in the arm for CBI, N K Amin, a former police officer and an accused in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, Monday decided to turn approver that could spell more trouble for Gujarat’s jailed former minister Amit Shah, a key accused.

“We are going to file an application in the CBI court on behalf of Amin to turn him into an approver in the (Sohrabuddin) case,” Amin’s lawyer Jadgish Ramani said while emerging out of the CBI office in Gandhinagar.

SC asks govt to show rule that bars women in army

New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court asked the defence ministry to produce the Army Act notification that makes women ineligible for permanent commission in the regular army.

On Monday, Jul 26 the apex court bench Justice JM Panchal and Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra told that the Section 12 of the Army Act, 1950 was in breach of Article 14 of the constitution. Then Additional Solicitor General Parag Tripathi claimed that the provision was protected by Article 33 of the constitution.

Bombing hits Pakistani minister’s home

Islamabad, July 26: A bomber has targeted the house of a Pakistani cabinet minister mourning, killing seven people mourning his slain son.

The attack came on Monday when a bomber blew himself up at the home of Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister in Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the town of Pabbi.

“Seven people, including three policemen, have been killed and 21 injured,” AFP quoted a senior police official as saying.

Mumbai, July 26: In a rare gesture, actor Paresh Rawal and his wife Swaroop Sampat have signed up to donate their skin.

The couple have taken up the brand ambassadorship for skin donation awareness to help the cause of burn victims.

The celebrity couple are closely associated with the National Burn Institute’s (NBI) Skin Bank and had recently signed up to donate their skin, Dr Shilpa Karnik said.

“Skin donation can be done after a person’s death and our retrieval team take out one eighth of the skin from lower extremities and back,” she said.

Congress using CBI to target BJP: Nitin Gadkari

Mumbai, July 26: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nitin Gadkari Monday slammed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for the alleged “misuse” of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a “tool against its adversaries”.

“The Congress is using the CBI as a tool against its adversaries… the CBI is a political arm of the UPA government,” Gadkari told reporters here.

Gadkari’s comments followed CBI’s decision to arrest former Gujarat minister of state for home Amit Shah in the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged Islamist, in a staged shootout.

Hockey India handled sexual harassment case in childish manner: Pargat

New Delhi, July 26: Former India captain Pargat Singh has criticised Hockey India (HI) for its handling of the accusations of sexual harassment against coach M.K. Kaushik.

“The way they handled the matter was childish. It is basically because of an inefficient administration. They did not handle it in a professional manner,” said Pargat, an Olympian, who is a candidate for the president’s post in HI elections slated for Wednesday.

Pargat said the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) should have taken up the matter.

Opposing illegal dam construction is our right: Naidu

New Delhi, July 26: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu Monday said it was his right to oppose the “illegal dam construction” over Godavari river, dismissing allegations that he was using the Babhali dam issue for political gains. He added that he would be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“We oppose the illegal dam construction over river Godavari. It is our right as the illegal construction affects the lives of people in our state. Then how will it become a political issue?” Naidu told IANS when asked about Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s allegations.

India a big challenge for youngsters: Simon Katich

Melbourne, July 26: Australia’s upcoming tour of India would be a big challenge for the youngsters of the team who are yet to play Test cricket in the sub-continent, feels opener Simon Katich.

Katich said it would be a very tough two-Test series against the Indians later this year.

CBI moves application to interrogate Shah in jail

Ahmedabad, July 26: The CBI today filed an application in a court here to interrogate former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah, accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, in jail.

Shah, facing murder and extortion charges in the fake encounter case, was arrested yesterday and was sent to judicial custody till August 7 by special CBI magistrate A Y Dave.

According to the application filed in the CBI court here, the central agency wants to interrogated Shah inside the jail premises itself.

The hearing on this application is likely to take place later in the day.

Arrest warrant reportedly issued for lawyer in stoning case

Berlin, July 26: An arrest warrant has been issued for Iranian lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei, and his wife and brother have already been arrested, opposition websites reported Monday.

Mostafaei is the lawyer of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who is convicted of adultery and murdering her husband and sentenced to be stoned to death.
The lawyer was to be arrested during the weekend but could not be found, opposition websites claimed. They said his wife and brother were arrested on Saturday.

The judiciary has not confirmed or denied the reports.

Hyderabad, July 26: The special court dealing with the multi-crore Satyam scam case today adjourned examination and hearing of charges against the accused to July 29.

Examination and hearing of charges against 10 Satyam personnel accused of fudging books of account of the company, including disgraced former Chairman B Ramalinga Raju, will commence on July 29.

Except Raju, who is in judicial remand and undergoing treatment for Hepatitis-C at the Nizam Institute of Medical Science (NIMS), all the nine accused, who are out on bail, were present in the court here today.

Burka ban Tory MP could face legal action

London, July 26: The MP who is refusing to hold meetings with Muslim women wearing full Islamic dress faces legal action.

In an interview with The Independent this month, Philip Hollobone said he would ask a woman wearing the niqab at his constituency surgery to lift her face veil. If she refused, he would end the interview, although he would take up her case if she later wrote a letter to him.
