Sexual harassment committe to inquire Kaushik case

New Delhi, July 26: Sports Ministry today decided to launch its own probe into the allegations of sexual harassment against former women’s hockey coach M K Kaushik by handing the task to its internal committee.

Kaushik had resigned after player Ranjita Devi complained to Hockey India that he sexually harassed her during the recent Canada and China tours. HI had already referred the case to Delhi Police after examining the report of its five-member inquiry committee set up after Ranjita’s complaint.

Online counselling going on smoothly

Vijayawada, July 26: The online counselling of EAMCET medical stream started at NTR University of Healthy Sciences and three other centres in the State, including Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati today.

Eleventh rank holder Jakkala Srilakshmi Surya Tejaswini of Mandapeta in East Godavari district was the first candidate to enter the counselling hall. She opted for an MBBS seat in Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad.

Top rankers, including 32, 37, 38, 44, 47, 48 and 49 attended counselling here.

Seasonal diseases claim 42 lives in Chittoor

Chittor, July 26: Seasonal and communicable diseases like gastroenteritis and viral fevers such as dengue and brain fever, which are rampant in many mandals, have claimed 42 lives in the district since June.

Interestingly the diseases have struck even mandals which surround towns and the district headquarters, leave alone remote and underdeveloped mandals which lack proper health care system.

Hockey sex scandal: Coach on defensive

New Delhi, July 26: Ex women’s hockey coach MK Kaushik hit back at the allegations of sexual harassment by a national player Ranjita Devi. “All allegations on me are false, I will come out clean”, he told a press conference.

His lawyer added that Hockey India had acted without evidence. He furthered his stance saying they didn’t need police probe.

Meanwhile, Sports Ministry decided to launch its own probe into the allegations of sexual harassment against former women’s hockey coach M K Kaushik by handing the task to its internal committee.

Heart of Indian culture lies in Islam: Khurshid

New Delhi, July 26: Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid Monday said Islam has played a ‘great role’ in shaping the country’s ‘Indianness’ in terms of art, culture and social behaviour.

‘Islam stands for peace, brotherhood and prosperity and in India this religion has played a great role in shaping the art, culture and social behaviour that today typically signifies the ‘Indianness’,’ Khurshid said, releasing a book on Islam here.

He stressed on the need to ‘soak our souls into the idea of secularism’.

Bomb kills six at Baghdad office of Arabic channel

Baghdad, July 26: A suicide bomber driving a minibus blew himself up in front of the Baghdad office of a popular Arabic news station early today, killing six people, and burying a lawmaker alive under the rubble of his collapsed home, police and hospital said.

The bomber was apparently waved through two checkpoints leading to the Al-Arabiya television station after security guards checked his identification, said Iraqi military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi. He said the explosion occurred about 10 minutes after the bomber cleared the second checkpoint.

CBI court sentences Sasikala’s husband to two years RI

Chennai, July 26: A CBI court today sentenced the husband of Sasikala, a close associate of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, and three others to two years rigorous imprisonment for “cheating” the exchequer of over Rs one crore in the import of a foreign car by fabricating documents.

Special Judge T Ravindran also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each on Sasikala’s husband M Natarajan, director of Tamilarasi Publications and her nephew V Bhaskaran, a signatory to operate the current account of the publications.

Maoists start using Nagpur as transit and treatment hub

New Delhi, July 26: The orange city of Nagpur appears to be getting tinted red as Maoist elements have begun using it as a potential transit and medical utility hub.

Security agencies were keeping a close watch on this central Indian city in Maharashtra since there were enough indications that Maoists often used it as a transit point to travel to different parts of the country, sources said today.

The orange city’s proximity to Naxal hotbeds of Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand could be the reason behind the Maoists often using it as transit point.

Shinde assures Punjab of 345 MW power for paddy season

New Delhi, July 26: Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today assured Punjab that 345 megawatts will be allowed from unallocated power of Central Sector to the state from mid-July to mid-October to ensure eight-hour uninterrupted electricity supply for the paddy season.

The assurance came when Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and PWD (Bridges and Roads) Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa called on Shinde at his office here, according to a release from the CM’s Office.

Delhi HC directive to Centre on National Haj Committee

New Delhi, July 26: The Delhi High Court today directed the Centre to nominate a person except one who has taken part in the election for National Haj Committee to look into all works for this year’s Haj pilgrimage arrangements.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan told the Centre’s counsel Atul Nanda that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) should not nominate any person who has participated in the election held in March.

Courts have no business to run govt, says apex court

New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court has quashed the CBI inquiry and contempt proceedings initiated by the Madhya Pradesh High Court against the State Electricity Board/ regulatory commission officials and said courts have no business to run the government.

A Bench of Justices Harjit Singh Bedi and K S Radhakrishnan held that it was beyond the jurisdiction of courts to decide in PILs on issues like supply of electricity as it was in the domain of independent state agencies.

CBI is not ‘Congress bureau of investigation’: PMJuly

New Delhi, July 26: The CBI is not the “Congress bureau of investigation”, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Monday, refuting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allegations of conspiracy behind the arrest of its leader Amit Shah.

“CBI… Is not Congress bureau of investigation. The CBI is not a mouthpiece of the Congress”. Manmohan Singh told reporters outside Parliament before the beginning of the monsoon session on Monday.

Gupta fake encounter case: two more cops arrested

Mumbai, July 26: A police inspector and a constable were today arrested in connection with the alleged fake encounter of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya, a close aide of gangster Chhota Rajan, after they surrendered before a sessions court here.

Police inspector Dilip Palande and constable Prakash Kadam today surrendered before the sessions court, which had on July 3 issued non-bailable warrants against seven police officers including the duo for their alleged role in the fake encounter case.

SC asks advocates to be internet savvy

New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court today asked lawyers to be internet savvy to help smoothen the processing of petitions for quick hearing, particularly in commercial matters.

The apex court said the use of e-mails by advocates and the apex court registry during the course of pendency of matters would help in reducing the arrears as the delay in judicial proceedings are due to late servicing of the documents to the contesting parties.

Sohrabuddin case: 2 ex-heads of state CID summoned

Ahmedabad, July 26: CBI has summoned two retired IPS officers, who had at one point of time headed the probe into the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case as chiefs of state CID, and questioned one of them.

G C Raigar and O P Mathur, who have already been questioned earlier by the CBI in connection with the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and killing of his wife Kausarbi in November 2005, have been called for further questioning, sources in the CBI said today.

Raigar is being questioned at Gandhinagar, they said.

Somnath refuses comments on CPI(M) charges

Kolkata, July 26: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today refused to comment on CPI(M) politburo’s charges that he was making “false assertions” on party chief Prakash Karat in his forthcoming book, and said he had nothing to say and advised patience till his memoirs were published.

“I have nothing to say. Please hold patience till my memoirs are published,” Chatterjee told PTI when asked to comment on the politburo’s reaction to his comments on party General Secretary Prakash Karat whom he held responsible for expelling him from the party.

No records of Rajiv’s calls after Bhopal gas leak: PMO

New Delhi, July 26: The mystery about who facilitated the escape of Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson’s from the country after the Bhopal gas tragedy, may never be solved.

The then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh has said in the past that Anderson was allowed to leave Bhopal to prevent a law and order situation in the city, but it was assumed that the orders to let him fly out of India on December 7, 1984, came from a higher authority in Delhi. Had Anderson been promised “safe passage” by the External Affairs Ministry?

Whether that was in fact the case may never be known.

‘Shah case Cong political strategy for Bihar polls’

Mumbai, July 26: Accusing Congress of using the Sohrabuddin encounter case to promote its vote bank politics ahead of Bihar assembly polls, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari today said his party was ready to legally and politically fight the case filed against former Gujarat minister Amit Shah.

“BJP will face the legal challenge presented by the fabricated prosecution in court of law. I declare that the BJP also accepts the political challenge thrown by the Congress and will take the issue to the people of India,” Gadkari told reporters at the state BJP office here.

RBI hints at hike policy rates to contain inflation

Mumbai, July 26: Hinting at a hike in its key rates tomorrow, the Reserve Bank today said it would continue exiting from its easy money regime to check double-digit inflation, while ensuring stable economic growth.

“Given the risk to inclusive growth from high inflation, the monetary unwinding that started in October, 2009 should continue till inflation expectations are firmly anchored and inflation is brought down,” RBI said in its macroeconomic report.

Gold sheds Rs 5 on scant demand; silver up by Rs 50

New Delhi, July 26: Gold prices eased by Rs 5 to Rs 18,520 per 10 grams in the bullion market today on sluggish demand, but silver gained Rs 50 to Rs 29,450 per kg as industrial units and retailers replenished their stocks ahead of the festive season.

Marketmen said scarce demand for gold at existing higher levels was mainly responsible for the fall in prices.

However, brisk buying ahead of the festival season helped silver trade higher, they said.

Yash Chopra awarded honorary doctorate by British college

New Delhi, July 26: Veteran Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra has been awarded honorary doctorate by the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in Britain for his outstanding contribution to the field of cinema.

He was given Doctorate of Letters Friday at the college of the University of London, said a press statement.

“I am humbled by this honour and would like to thank SOAS for this recognition. My filmmaking has always been from the heart and I would like to pass on this same message to students all over the world,” Chopra said after receiving the honour.
