Both houses of parliament adjourned over price rise

New Delhi, July 27: Both houses of parliament were adjourned till 12 noon Tuesday following protests over price rise by opposition members as well as Samajwadi Party (SP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MPs.

Soon after the proceedings began in the Lok Sabha, members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) stood up and shouted slogans against increasing prices. Speaker Meira Kumar repeatedly urged that the issue could be raised after question hour, but to no avail.

Cargo plane crashes in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh/Cairo, July 27: A Lufthansa cargo plane crashed Tuesday as it was attempting to land in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, authorities said.

The pilot and co-pilot were being taken to hospital, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said, without elaborating on the condition of the two people who were on board.

Black smoke came from the plane as it started to descend over Riyadh before it crashed and broke in half, the al-Arabiya satellite channel reported.

Firefighters and other emergencies services were at the scene, trying to extinguish the fire.

Hike in key rates to ease inflation; to keep growth on track: FM

New Delhi, July 27: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here today said the hike in key rates will ease inflation, besides keeping economic growth on track.

”I expect that this policy will lead to further easing of inflation, which is already going down, and it should also keep us fully on track in terms of growth,” Mr Mukherjee said.

The Reserve Bank of India this morning raised repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.75 per cent and reverse repo rate by 50 basis points to 4.50 per cent. It has kept cash reserve ratio unchanged at six per cent.

Naidu threatens to launch mass agitation on Babhali issue

New Delhi, July 27: Holding the Centre and Congress responsible for Maharashtra government’s attitude, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu Tuesday threatened to launch a mass agitation programme if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh fails to resolve the Babhali issue amicably by August 10.

A day after meeting Singh as part of an all-party delegation from Andhra Pradesh, he accused the Prime Minister of not being interested in solving the problems the state has with Maharashtra.

Israeli settlers attack WB village

West Bank, July 27: Armed Israeli settlers have attacked a Palestinian village in the northern West Bank in retaliation for Tel Aviv’s demolition of an illegal settlement outpost.

Dozens of settlers from the illegal Yizhar settlement, near the city of Nablus, stormed the neighboring Burin village on Monday evening and set fire to an olive orchard, Ma’an news agency reported.

They damaged a new Palestinian home and engaged in fist fighting with the villagers, wounding two people.

US Afghan war to persist after 2011

Washington, July 27: US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen has concluded his visit to Pakistan and Afghanistan, amid doubts over Washington’s war strategy in the region.

Mullen said Monday that a mid 2011 deadline for the start of a withdrawal of US troops from the war-torn Afghanistan did not signal a retreat from the region.

CRPF constable found guilty of killing Additional DIG

Hyderabad, July 27: The seventh additional metropolitan sessions judge court of Hyderabad on Monday found constable T Hanumantha Rao of Chandrayanagutta CRPF office guilty of killing his additional DIG (administration) and trying to kill another deputy commandant. The DIG was killed in his chamber on December 31, 2008 from close range with an Insas rifle.

Pak bowler Mohammed Asif grabs lead role in Malayalam movie

Thiruvananthapuram, July 27: Pakistani fast bowler Mohammed Asif will make his film debut with a Malayalam film, directed by reknowned lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri. Shooting of the movie, titled “Mazhavillinnattamvare” (till the tip of the rainbow) is scheduled to begin in North Kerala in September.
The movie is also the directorial debut of Kaithapram, who has penned hundreds of songs, winning several national and state awards.

“Asif is now busy playing cricket in England. He will be free by September to begin shooting in Kannur in north Kerala,” Kaithapram told PTI.

Man hides 140,000 pounds in aunt’s grave

London, July 27: A Briton hid 140,000 pounds in his aunt’s grave to dodge tax sleuths, but the cache was uncovered after the tax inspectors were tipped-off.

The man buried the money so as to fool the Inland Revenue. He planned to leave the cash there for 20 years before digging it up. The 20 year period is the time limit for tax investigations, The Sun reported Monday.

Tax inspectors got a wind off the devious plan and sought permission from a priest to dig up the grave and recovered their 50,000 pounds share from the businessman.

Asian Games gold medalist wrestler Mane passes away

Sangli , July 27: Asian Games gold medal winning wrestler and former Rajyasabha MP Maruti Mane passed away today at a hospital in Miraj after suffering from a prolonged illness, family sources said.

He was 73.

Mane had tasted success at international level and had made a name for himself in India by winning the Hind Kesari title in 1964.

Prior to that, he had won gold medal in the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta. He was also awarded with the Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar and the Dhyanchand Award by the Maharashtra government and the Delhi government respectively in 2005.

London, July 27: A woman trapped in a paralysed body has been able to ‘talk’ to her family once again, thanks to an amazing device that converts sniffs into speech.

The 51-year-old school teacher was diagnosed with ‘locked in syndrome’ after a severe stroke left her fully awake, but unable to move.

For seven months, her only means of communication as she lay on her bed were the movements of her eyes to signal ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to questions from doctors and her family, reports the Daily Mail.
