Karna slaps ban on issue of mineral dispatch permits

Bangalore, July 28: The Karnataka government today banned issue of permits to transport iron ore and other minerals for exports, saying this necessary to protect natural resources and check illegal mining and illegal export of minerals.

“To protect the natural resources and to check illegal mining and illegal export of minerals, it has been decided to stop issue of Mineral Dispatch Permit with immediate effect,” a notification issued by state’s Commerce and Industries Department said here.

Woman killed, husband battling for life

New Delhi, July 28: A 22-year-old woman died under mysterious circumstances today while her unemployed husband was battling for life in a city hospital after he allegedly consumed poison, police said.

Investigators suspect Ajay Kumar (30) allegedly strangled his wife Manisha and then attempted to commit suicide by consuming some poisonous substance, a senior police officer said.

The incident was reported from Narela at 1:30 pm when police received a call informing them about the couple lying unconscious in their residence, he said.

Maha to act against minority institutes flouting norms

Mumbai, July 28: Maharashtra Government today said it would take stringent action, including cancellation of status, on minority educational institutes that do not adhere to norms for linguistic or religious minority quota.

Minority development department minister Naseem Khan announced this after a meeting at his official residence here.

The minister said he had asked the department to take action against such institutes.

“There is a provision to cancel the minority status of such institutes if they fail to fill up the mandatory quota for three years in a row,” he said.

Railways seek CBI probe into Sainthia train mishap

New Delhi, July 28: Railways have written to the Home Ministry seeking a CBI probe into the Sainthia rail accident on July 19 which claimed 66 lives.

According to highly placed sources in the Railway Ministry, a letter seeking CBI probe has been sent by Railway Board Chairman Vivek Sahai to the Home Ministry.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had hinted about the possibility of a conspiracy behind the deadly collision while Sahai had described the loco pilots’ action as “very unusual”.

Sohrab case: Shah quizzed by CBI for over 4 hours

Ahmedabad, July 28: The CBI today grilled for more than four hours former Gujarat minister Amit Shah in Sabarmati jail for his alleged role in the killing of suspected gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife in 2005.

A CBI team started interrogating 46-year-old Shah around 11 AM and his quizzing continued till around 3.30 PM, sources in the Central agency said.

The questioning of Shah, lodged in Tilak barrack of Sabarmati Jail near here after being arrested last Sunday, is likely to continue tomorrow.

‘US’ Af-Pak policy includes how to deal with Pakistan’

Washington, July 28: The situation in Af-Pak area is “not fine” and “hunky dory”, the US has acknowledged, even as the Obama Administration has said that the policy for the restive region also includes how to deal with Pakistan.

“Nobody is here to say that all of our problems dealing with Afghanistan and Pakistan are finished,” the White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, said.

“All our problems are not solved, but we’re making progress,” he added.

30,000 trapped after rains hit China

Beijing, July 28: More than 30,000 people were trapped by floodwaters in a town in northeast China after torrential rains, officials said Wednesday.

Telecommunications were down in Kouqian town in Jilin province and about 200 rescuers had been sent in, officials with the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said.

Over 80 passengers were stranded at the Kouqian station which was surrounded by floodwaters after the Xingshan Reservoir overflowed, the official told Xinhua.

US unable to account for billions of Iraq oil money

Washington, July 28: The US defence department is unable to account for almost $9bn taken from Iraqi oil revenues for use in reconstruction, according to an official audit released yesterday.

The report by the US Special Investigator for Iraq Reconstruction says $8.7bn (£5.6bn) out of $9.1bn withdrawn between 2004 and 2007 from a special account set up by the UN Security Council is unaccounted for. This is separate from $53bn set aside by Congress for Iraqi reconstruction.

Facebook helps crack Philippines murder case

Manila, July 28: Philippine police said Wednesday Facebook helped crack a murder case against a Filipino man suspected to have killed nine people, including three foreigners.

Police Senior Inspector Joel Mariano said at least two witnesses were able to positively identify the suspect through his Facebook account as the person they saw at the crime scene.

“Facebook helped us in getting positive identification of the suspect from some of the witnesses,” he said. “I think we have a solid case against the suspect.”

Class IX student opens fires at schoolmate

New Delhi, July 28: A clash between two groups of students in a south Delhi school today took an ugly turn when a Class IX student allegedly opened fire on a schoolmate, leaving him injured.

The shocking incident took place in Veer Chandra Garwhal Public School in Saket at around 9 am and the injured has been identified as Gaurav Yadav, a Class VIII student.

The firing took place during a clash between two groups of students over some issue, a senior police official said.”

HC raps Centre over status of Hockey India

New Delhi, July 28: The Delhi High Court today came down heavily on the Central government for not complying with its order regarding recognition of Hockey India (HI) and said that elections in it might be postponed.

Despite the High Court”s order that HI is a private body and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) the only recognised body of the sport, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said that both IHF and HI are recognised bodies.

Begging to be made criminal offence in Dubai

Dubai, July 28: Dubai Police are eagerly awaiting the implementation of a proposed federal law that makes begging a criminal offence. Currently there is no unified law to tackle the menace and each emirate deals with the offence differently.

The “Combat Street Beggars” campaign which kicked off on Sunday, has dedicated more than 30 patrol units to monitor mosques and neighbourhoods to combat the menace.

The campaign will also investigate tourist companies assisting in bringing beggars into the country.

HC issues notice to Varun for defamatory remarks

New Delhi, July 28: The Delhi High Court today issued notice to BJP MP Varun Gandhi on a petition filed by his uncle and Congress candidate from Pilibhit constituency V M Singh for allegedly making defamatory remarks against him during the last Lok Sabha elections.

Justice Aruna Suresh sought a response from Gandhi by July 30 in the matter.

In a petition filed by Singh through his counsel Arjun Harkauli, he alleged that Gandhi made remarks linking him to Pakistan’s ISI and working for a separate state of Khalistan.

Injuries on Salem were ”self-inflicted”, alleges Dossa

Mumbai, July 28: Suspected underworld don Dawood Ibrahim gang member Mustafa Dossa, who allegedly attacked extradited gangster Abu Salem inside the Arthur Road jail, today alleged that the injuries on Salem were “self-inflicted”, a crime branch source said.

“During the preliminary questioning, Dossa alleged that Salem, with the help of his associates, injured self to falsely implicate me,” said a source from the Crime Branch, probing the attack on Salem’s injury case.
