CBI summons former Guj DGP for questioning in Sohrabuddin case

Ahmedabad, July 29: CBI has summoned former Gujarat DGP P C Pandey for questioning in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case.

The agency has called Pandey to appear before it on August 11, CBI officials said last night.

Pandey was DGP when the state CID was investigating the fake encounter case.

There have been allegations that some police officials of Gujarat had tried to influence the investigation into the incident.

All-party meeting a ‘disappointment’

Hyderabad, July 29: Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday expressed his disappointment at the ‘half-hearted’ response shown by Prime Minister Manmohan to the all-party delegation which had called on him on July 26.

Talking to media persons at his residence, the former chief minister said that neither the Union Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal nor any senior officials of the ministry were even present during the meeting.

Nagender confident of Cong win in by-polls

Hyderabad, July 29: Health Minister Danam Nagender on Wednesday exuded confidence that the Congress party will capture the majority of the 12 Assembly constituencies for which voting was held on Tuesday.

Talking to media persons, Mr Nagender scoffed at the ‘survey’ conducted by Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal which said that the sitting MLAs would be re-elected.

CBI wants to question Narendra Modi

Ahmedabad, July 29: The CBI team, which has sent former minister of state for home Amit Shah behind bars, is likely to seek permission from its headquarters soon to question CM Narendra Modi who is also holding the home portfolio.

Another special investigation team (SIT), which is probing the Gulbarg Society massacre of 2002, had questioned Modi for nine hours on March 27 this year.

Teacher doesn’t wear burqa, barred from class

Kolkata, July 29: A teacher in West Bengal’s first Muslim university has not been able to hold her classes for the last three months after she rebelled against the tradition and decided not to wear burqa.

Though the guidelines at Aliah University in Kolkata do not stipulate that women teacher should wear burqa, the students’ union say the 24-year-old teacher, Sirin Middya, can teach but only in burqa.

UP: Man kills father for ‘seducing his wife’

Lucknow, July 29: A man allegedly stabbed his 50-plus father to death over the suspicion that his father was trying to seduce his wife.

Besides killing his father, the man also stabbed his mother and his brother when they tried to intervene, reported Times of India.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday, Jul 26 in Jyotibaphule Nagar in Uttar Pradesh under Amroha police station limits.

Quoting police, the newspaper reported on Wednesday, Jul 28 that Rishipal had reservation over the manner in which his father behaved with his wife.

Need to control Hindu terror groups: Yechury

New Delhi, July 28: Warning against the growing network of Hindutva terror groups, Communist party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury Wednesday said the government and security agencies must take firm action against such groups.

“The government will have to take firm action against these groups which are promoting Hindutva terror,” Yechury said on the sidelines of a symposium on Hindutva terror groups organised by the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust here.

CBI summons ex-Gujarat police chief P.C. Pande

Gandhinagar, July 29: Former Gujarat director general of police P.C. Pande was Wednesday summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

He has been told to appear before the CBI Aug 11, CBI sources said.

Pande was the Ahmedabad commissioner of police during the 2002 communal riots and was the state police chief when a bulk of the shootouts by the police, including the one in which Sheikh was killed, took place.

Pande was made chairman of the Gujarat Police Housing Corporation after his retirement.

Profiles of 100 mn Facebook users leaked online

London, July 29: The personal details of 100 million users of social networking website Facebook are now available for download after they were leaked online.

Ron Bowles, an online security consultant, used a code to scan Facebook profiles, collected data not hidden by users’ privacy settings, and compiled a list, which is now available as a downloadable file, containing the URL of every “searchable” Facebook user’s profile, their name and unique ID, the BBC reported Thursday.

New Delhi, July 29: Tears roll down her cheeks as Farzana Bano Ayub Khan Pathan narrates how her family members, including her daughters, were brutally raped and murdered in front of her in the 2002 Gujarat violence.

She had at least hoped for a woman lawyer in a court of justice, but was not given one.

Similar is the case of Jannatbi Kalubhai Sheikh who witnessed the murder of a nine-month pregnant woman, Kauserbano, during the violence. Jannatbi, who is also testifying in cases related to the rape of four other women, finds the going tough in Gujarat courts.

Lucknow, July 29: Former Uttar Pradesh inspector general of police D.K. Panda, who abandoned his wife after proclaiming himself to be a reincarnation of Lord Krishna’s childhood companion Radha, was told by a court Wednesday to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs.15,000 to his wife.

Pakistan has to do more in fighting terror: US

Washington, July 29: Endorsing British Prime Minister David Cameron’s call to Pakistan to stop ‘exporting’ terror, the US says Pakistan has made a strategic shift in the fight against terror, but more has to be done.

CBI to grill Shah for second time today

Ahemdabad, July 29: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s close aide and state’s Home Minister Amit Shah will Thursday face a second round of grilling by the CBI in connection with the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife, Kauser bi.in 2005.

In a dramatic twists to the case, Shah denied any knowledge or involvement in the Sohrabuddin case during interrogation by the CBI yesterday.

Builders paid Rs 70 lakh to Amit Shah: CBI

New Delhi, July 29: The owners of Popular Builders paid Rs 70 lakh to former Gujarat minister of state for home Amit Shah to avoid being booked under Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act, said the chargesheet filed by CBI in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter killing case.

In December 2004, Gujarat police had stage managed a shoot-out at the office of Popular Builders owned by Raman Patel and Dashrat Patel, using close aides of Sohrabuddin with the purpose of lodging FIR against Sohrabuddin in Gujarat, the chargesheet said.
