Will abide by court order on IAF dues: Deve Gowda

New Delhi, July 01: After IAF approached the Delhi High Court to recover dues from him for use of its aircraft allegedly for non-official purposes, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today said he will abide by the court order.

“The matter is sub-judice before the Delhi High Court and I would abide by the judgement,” Gowda told reporters here.

The former Prime Minister, however, said that the amount of a little over Rs 54 lakh was due from the then Janata Dal as per government records and the amount has to be paid by the political party and not a person in his individual capacity.

AEA’s top nuclear inspector resigns

Vienna, July 01: The chief nuclear inspector of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Olli Heinonen, is resigning after leading the probe of Iran’s nuclear programme for the past five years, an IAEA’s spokeswoman said Thursday.

Heinonen would leave the Vienna-based agency at the end of August for personal reasons, IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said. A successor has yet to be named.

The Finnish nuclear expert had been appointed by the previous IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei, who was succeeded by Yukiya Amano late last year.

Moily’s Ramayana weaves current realities into epic

Nityananda seeks ex-disciple’s prosecution

Bangalore, July 01: Nityananda today moved an application before the Karnataka High Court praying for prosecuting his former disciple K Lenin, accusing him of filing a “false” complaint that he had indulged in sleaze activities.

Nityananda, facing rape and other criminal charges filed against him based on Lenin’s complaint, sought a direction to the police to file an FIR against Lenin for providing them with “false” information.

The self-styled godman was recently released on bail after 53 days of judicial custody.

Students to protest against caste-based census

New Delhi July 01: Students from various universities in the capital would hold a protest at Jantar Mantar July 4 against the ongoing issue of caste-based census and instead seek a census based on financial status of people.

Students from the Delhi University, Delhi Technological University and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have started a movement ‘Meri Jaati Hindustani’ to protest caste-based census.

Brazilian woman’s rapist sent to 14 days judicial custody

New Delhi, July 01: A city court Thursday sent a Delhi resident arrested on charges of raping his 27-year-old Brazilian tenant to 14 days judicial custody.

Baljeet Singh was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Gagandeep Singh, who asked the jail authorities to present Singh in court July 14.

The victim, a student of mass communications in Noida, was staying in south Delhi’s C.R. Park area since June 19.

She lodged a police complaint June 27 saying her landlord raped her twice June 20-21.

Makkah Masjid blast case, Gupta in CBI custody

Hyderabad, July 01: A local court today remanded Mecca Masjid blast case accused Devendra Gupta in CBI custody for seven days.

Gupta, also an accused in the Ajmer blast case, will be in CBI custody from tomorrow till July 8.

The court passed the orders after CBI filed a petition seeking custodial interrogation of Gupta in connection with the Mecca Masjid blast case.

Another accused in the case Lokesh Sharma, who allegedly conspired to carry out explosion in the masjid, is presently in CBI custody till July 9.

17 dead in Turkey clash

Istanbul, July 01: Two Turkish soldiers and three members of a government-supported militia were killed in an attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, Turkey’s military said Thursday.

The military in a statement also said that 12 PKK members were also killed in the clash.

The incident took place late Wednesday in a rural area in the eastern province of Siirt. The clash took place when members of the PKK tried to attack a military outpost, the statement said.

PPP, judiciary on a confrontation course in Pak

Lahore, July 01: The confrontation between the ruling Pakistan People’s Party and the judiciary has taken a new turn following a High Court Chief Justice’s advice to the PPP to quit the coalition in Punjab province if it has objections to the appointment of a legal official.

Senior PPP leaders and prominent lawyers have taken exception to Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Mohammad Sharif?s comments and said they will approach the Supreme Judicial Council to take action against him.

Police to reopen sex scandal case against Al Gore

Los Angeles, July 01: Police have decided to reopen an investigation into allegations that former US vice president Al Gore made unwanted sexual contact with a masseuse in a hotel in 2006.

However, Gore’s representative Kalee Kreider has issued a statement to deny “unequivocally and emphatically” allegations that the politician groped the masseuse.

New Delhi, July 01: An year after the Delhi High Court passed a landmark verdict decriminalising homosexuality, gays in India can certainly breathe freer. But it’s not all sunshine and roses with social prejudices still well entrenched, especially outside the big cities.

On July 2, 2009, the Delhi High Court overturned the 150-year-old section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which penalised people voluntarily engaging in “unnatural sex” with imprisonment up to 10 years or life.

Youth arrested for raping and murdering minor in Bhopal

Bhopal, July 01: A 21-year-old was today arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a minor, police said.

The accused, identified as Vishal Dabi, took the girl to his house on June 27 where he stranguled the girl to death after raping her, Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Singh said.

Dabi had kept the girl’s body in a bag which he threw outside his house this morning, police said, adding that the body has been sent for post mortem.

The youth was staying as a tenant in a house owned by the girl’s family.

By-polls announced in Telangana

New Delhi, July 01: By-elections to Vemulawada and Sircilla Assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh would be held along with elections to ten other seats in the state on July 27, the Election Commission announced today.

The Commission has decided to go ahead with elections to these two Assembly seats following a directive from the Andhra Pradesh High Court yesterday.

Haneef sues former Australian minister

Melbourne, July 01: Mohamed Haneef, an Indian doctor who was falsely accused of aiding terrorists, has launched defamation proceedings against a former Australian minister.

Haneef’s lawyers said they lodged the suit against former immigration minister Kevin Andrews in the Supreme Court in Brisbane Thursday, Australian news agency AAP reported.

A claim has also been made for unlawful arrest and abuse of power against the government, the report said.

Taliban threaten to attack Indians

Kabul, July 01: The Afghan Taliban has said that it would now launch a “new war strategy” in which they will target Indians, who are working in various NGOs and other organisations in the country.

“The operation commanders of the Islamic Emirate (as Taliban movement calls itself) are going to meet shortly to finalize a new war strategy under which the foreigners working on their national agendas, particularly Indians, will be targeted,” a newspaper quoted Qari Ziaur Rehman, a Taliban commander, as saying.
