‘Harry Potter’ actress’ family threatened to kill her

London, July 02: “Harry Potter” actress Afshan Azad, who plays Padma Patil in the wizard franchise, has accused her father Abdul Azad and brother Ashraf of threatening to kill her.

The 22-year-old was allegedly attacked by her two family members at her home in Manchester in May this year, reports contactmusic.com.

Her father and brother allegedly began arguing with Afshan over her boyfriend and demanded she should end the relationship. When she refused, they attacked and left her badly bruised.

Top Maoist leader gunned down in AP

Adilabad, July 02: In a major blow to the Maoists, their top leader and spokesperson Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad was gunned down by state’s elite anti-Naxal force Greyhounds near Adilabad early Friday.

Initial reports suggest that a fierce encounter took place between the forces and the Maoists near Jogapur in Adilabad district; about 300 km from here, following which Rajkumar was cornered and neutralised.

Another Maoist guerrilla as Chanderan was also killed. Police recovered an AK-47, a 9mm pistol and two kit bags from the scene of the gunfight.

Stiff rules soon for visas to Pakistanis

New Delhi, July 02: The Home Ministry, which holds visa power on applications from Pakistanis, is bringing in stringent eligibility conditions to keep out “unwanted elements”.

Norms proposed by the Intelligence Bureau introduce an income criteria whereby only applications from those with monthly income exceeding Pakistani Rupees 25,000 would be entertained. An educational qualification at least High School would also be a must, IB sources said.

Malaysian Indian searches for missing daughter

Kuala Lumpur, July 02: A Malaysian Indian man and his Chinese wife have given up work to search for their two-year-old daughter who went missing about a month ago while on a walk with her mentally-ill grand-aunt.

G. Chandramohan, 24, and his wife Wong Lai Lan, 21, have said their daughter Nisha could have been found on the day she disappeared if a system such as the proposed Nationwide Urgent Response Information Network (NURIN) alert was in place.

Michael E. Leiter, the head of the National Counter-terrorism Center, would not define what Anwar al-Awlaki’s alleged “direct operational role” was in the failed attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Dec. 25, 2009, The Washington Times reported Thursday.

But it would make anyone a legitimate target for U.S. intelligence agencies to capture or kill, he said.

Fake cops dupe jeweler

Hyderabad, July 2 (Siasat News): Three men posing as cops snatched 1.5 kg of gold ornaments from a Gujarati merchant at Tank Bund and escaped on two motorcycles on Thursday.

The merchant Praveen Babulal Soni, native of Ahmedabad, supplies gold ornaments to city jewelers.

The fake cops approached him on the pretext of questioning him, grabbed his bag containing gold and immediately fled the scene.

Cairo, July 02: Egyptian Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa is traveling on Thursday to attend the 47th Conference of the Islamic Union, to be held in the U.S. city of Chicago from 1 to 5 July.

Participating in the event will be prominent politicians, academics, scholars and influential public figures.

Gomaa is scheduled to deliver a speech next Saturday before 12,000 Muslim and non-Muslim Americans, in which he will explain that compassion is an Islamic value explicitly mentioned in the Koran and reiterated in the Sunna (the sayings and practices of the Prophet Mohamed).

Jagan Reddy likely to go ahead with his ‘yatra’

“There is no change in the schedule. He will resume his yatra from July 8. The family members of late Rajasekhara Reddy explained the need to resume the yatra to Sonia Gandhiji when they met her in Delhi recently. Films are not meant to change lives, says director Sajid Khan

Mumbai, July 02:Director Sajid Khan, who has two hit films in his kitty, is of the opinion that films are made purely for entertainment and do not have the power to change lives or make any impact on the society.

“Films don’t change lives, nor are they made to change anything, their only purpose is to entertain. Cinema is a medium which makes you forget your worries and present a world which you can never be a part of,” Sajid told PTI.

Three newspapers sealed in Jammu

Jammu, July 02: The Jammu and Kashmir government has sealed the presses of three newspapers in Jammu for “printing inflammatory material”.

The printing presses were sealed Thursday night and the publications suspended indefinitely on the orders of Jammu Deputy Commissioner M.K. Dwivedi.

“According to him, three newspapers (The Shadow, Early Times and Glimpses of Future) were publishing inflammatory material,” said a notice served on the three English newspapers published from Jammu.

Al Qaeda launches English online magazine

Washington, July 02: In a move that is being seen as a way to recruit more US-born terrorists, militant outfit Al Qaeda launched what it is calling its first English language online magazine.

The magazine, called “Inspire”, was posted on radical Islamist websites, the CNN reported citing SITE Intelligence Group, an organisation that tracks terror groups.

The launch of the magazine, however, did not go smoothly as only three pages of what was billed as a 67-page magazine appeared online. A fourth page showed nothing but garbled images.

UAE families to get free dry fruits during Ramadan

Abu Dhabi, July 02: Around 45,000 families in the United Arab Emirates will get free dry fruits and other food items that are consumed by Muslims observing the month-long fast during Ramadan.

Under the project “Ramadan Supplies for 2010”, the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation in cooperation with the ministry of social affairs will distribute 11 food items through 24 centres across the UAE.

Ramadan is considered the most auspicious month in the Islamic calendar.
