Sharad Yadav calls on youth to join Bharat Bandh

New Delhi, July 02: Accusing the central government of betraying the interests of the common man, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Sharad Yadav Friday urged the youth to come out on the streets July 5 for a nationwide shutdown against rising prices.

Talking to reporters here, Yadav said opposition parties had given a call for ‘Bharat Bandh’ to protest the “complete failure of the government” in controlling prices.

“I want to call upon all youngsters, especially students, to come out on the streets in protest against the rising prices,” Yadav said.

Patna, July 02: JD(U) today slammed the Manmohan Singh government for the move to free the price of diesel from government control and wondered what type of reforms the Centre was carrying out.

More detained in Kurla rape and murder cases

Mumbai, July 02: Seven person were today detained for questioning by police, a day after a teenager was arrested in connection with rape and murder of a minor in suburban Kurla.

Javed Rehman Shaikh (19), a technician with a cable operator, was arrested yesterday on charges of raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in suburban Kurla last month.

After brief questioning of Javed, “we have picked up seven persons to probe their role in all the three cases,” a police official said.

BJP will decide if Modi, Varun will campaign: Gadkari

New Delhi, July 02: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Friday said his party will take its own decision whether Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha member Varun Gandhi will participate in the campaign for the coming Bihar assembly polls.

“We have the right to decide which all leaders of the BJP should campaign in Bihar. We will decide it at the appropriate time and implement it,” Gadkari told IANS.

Bangalore, July 02: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said in the state Assembly that the “loot” of iron ore has been going on unchecked since 2003-04 and favoured an inquiry into the matter.

Hitting back at the Opposition after it sharpened its attack on government on the issue, he said “the loot of iron ore has been going on since 2003-04 and it happened during the regimes of H D Kumaraswamy, N Dharam Singh and even during my tenure.”

Case registered against TRS MP Vijayashanti

Hyderabad, July 02: A case has been registered against popular South Indian actress and MP Vijayashanti of Telangana Rashtra Samithi for allegedly making inflammatory remarks.

Banaraja Hills police have registered a case against her for allegedly making inflammatory remarks while addressing an election meeting of party workers at the TRS office here on Wednesday.

The meeting was organised in connection with July 27 by-polls to 12 Assembly segments in the Telangana region. She had allegedly made the remarks against those opposed to the formation of a separate Telangana state.

Student arrested for sending threat mail to school

Kolkata, July 02: The CID today arrested a student of Heritage School here for allegedly sending a mail to the principal threatening to blow off the school building.

Rakesh Singh, a student of the Heritage School, was arrested from his residence at Bangur in the outskirts of the city for sending the mail last Wednesday, CID sources said.

The CID, after being informed by the principal about the threat mail, conducted an investigation and found that the mail was sent by Singh.

Hyderabad, July 02: Top Maoist leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, who was killed by police in Andhra Pradesh early Friday, had apparently gone ‘missing’ four months ago.

The politburo member and chief spokesperson of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) had gone ‘missing’ March 12. The Maoist outfit had alleged that the Special Investigations Bureau of Andhra Pradesh Police had picked him up and it even threatened revenge if security forces harmed him.

20 child abuses another catholic priest

Sydney, July 02: In the wake of embarrassments for child abuse scandals, another Catholic priest has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in jail for sex attacks on 25 children during almost two decades.

The 67-year-old Australian Catholic priest, John Sidney Denham, was sentenced to 19 years and 10 months on Friday after pleading guilty to a range of charges, including multiple counts of indecent assault against boys aged five to 16 at schools in Sydney and New South Wales between 1968 and 1986, AFP reported on Friday.

Judge Helen Syme has described some of the offences as sadistic.

Turkish fighter jets strike northern Iraq

Ankara, July 02: Turkish fighter jets have launched airstrikes on targets in northern Iraq, which is seen as the hotbed for Kurdish militants’ activity, Turkish military says.

The warplanes bombed Kurdish separatist targets in the Qandil Mountains and the Hakurk region of northern Iraq, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on Friday.

“It was observed that targets were successfully hit in the airstrike,” the statement said.

The warplanes returned to Turkey safely and no casualties have been reported yet, it said.

Barack Obama ranked 15th best US President

Washington, July 02: Barack Obama has been ranked as the 15th best president of the United States, two ranks below Bill Clinton in a new poll which is topped by Franklin D Roosevelt.

Obama’s immediate predecessor, George W Bush, has been ranked at 39 out of 43 presidents of the US listed in the Siena College poll that surveyed 238 presidential scholars at colleges and universities.

The poll had asked scholars to rate the nation’s 43 chief executives on 20 attributes ranging from legislative accomplishments to integrity and imagination, a media release said.

Maoists looted Ak47s in Narayanpur attack

Hyderabad, July 02: The outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has put the number of its cadres killed in the ambush in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district Tuesday at three and claimed that the rebels looted 27 sophisticated weapons, including AK47s, from the slain security men.

“The weapons recovered from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) helped the Maoists increase their weaponry by eight AK47s, eight INSAS rifles, three SLRs, two two-inch mortars and 2 LMGs,” a statement released by the CPI-Maoist said Thursday night.

12-year-old boy rapes girl older than him

New Delhi, July 02: In a shocking incident, a 12-year-old boy raped a 14-year-old girl in the Tilak Marg area of central Delhi, police said Thursday.

The incident took place in the servants quarter of an Indian Administrative Service official on Bhagwan Das Road Wednesday, police said.

“The boy has been arrested and sent to a juvenile home,” an official said.

A rape case was registered after the girl’s medical examination, he said. As per the complaint filed by the girl’s parents, their daughter was raped when she was alone in the quarter.

Entire Srinagar district under curfew

Srinagar, July 02: Sensing trouble ahead of a proposed march by separatists, authorities on Friday brought the entire Srinagar district under curfew even as they gave no relaxation in curfew-hit areas of south Kashmir.

With overnight protests in the city and an abortive attempt by activists of a woman separatist outfit to take out a march to Pather Masjid in defiance of curfew yesterday, District Magistrate, Srinagar, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo announced imposition of curfew in the entire Srinagar district this morning in a television address.

45 feared drowned as boat capsizes

Bettiah, July 02: One person was killed and 45 others were feared drowned when an overcrowded boat capsized in the turbulent Gandak river in Bihar’s West Champaran district Friday morning.

The police said the overloaded boat was going to Bhagwanpur from Ranha village when it capsized near Ghoria Ghat.

One body has been fished out from the swollen river while local divers searched for 45 missing persons.

Senior district officials were supervising the rescue and relief operation, the police said.

S M Krishna on visit to Mauritius, Mozambique

New Delhi, July 02: External Affairs Minister S M Krishna embarks on a four-day visit to Mauritius and Mozambique from Friday to further strengthen relations with the Indian Ocean Rim countries.

In Port Luis, Krishna will hold talks with his Mauritius counterpart Arvin Boolell on a range of issues, including on renegotiation of the Double Taxation Avoidance Treaty (DTAA).

Krishna will seek to enhance strategic dialogue with the island nation as also to deepen economic and cultural ties.
