Maoist leader Azad’s body to be brought to Hyderabad

Hyderabad, July 03: The body of top Maoist leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, who was killed in an alleged gun battle by the Andhra Pradesh Police, is being brought to Hyderabad for last rites, police Saturday said.

Azad, considered second in the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hierarchy and also spokesperson of the outfit, was gunned down Friday in the forests near Jogapur in Adilabad district, about 300 km from here. Another Maoist, Sahadev was also killed.

Capsule fails to dock with space station

Moscow, July 03: An unmanned Russian space capsule carrying supplies to the International Space Station failed in a docking attempt, Russian Mission Control and Nasa said.

The Progress space capsule is carrying more than two tons of food, water and other supplies for the orbiting laboratory. Three Russian and three US astronauts comprise the current crew.

None of the supplies were deemed necessary for the station’s immediate survival and the outpost is well supplied, said Nasa flight commentator Rob Navias.

Fresh probe into ‘goonda banks’ in Bihar

Patna, July 03: Nearly four years after illegal banks run by criminals and musclemen in rural Bihar came to light, police have decided to launch a fresh probe into their operation.

The agents of ‘goonda banks’, as they are called, force people to deposit their hard earned money with the promise that it will be doubled within a year and provide loans at high interest rates.

They target farmers and local businessmen and confiscate the properties of those who are unable to pay back the loans.

New Delhi, July 03: A Delhi court today fixed July eight for hearing the bail plea of self-styled godman Shiv Murat Dwivedi in a case against him under the stringent MCOCA for allegedly running a flesh trade racket here.

“Fix the matter for hearing on the bail application and the reply of the prosecution on July eight,” Additional Sessions Judge S K Sarvaria said.

New Delhi, Julu 03: BJP President Nitin Gadkari will be contesting the 2014 Lok Sabha polls with an eye on the Prime Minister’s post, party sources said.

AP police silence Maoist spokesman

Hyderabad, July 03: In a major blow to the CPI (Maoist), which is currently giving nightmares to the Centre, one of its topranking leaders and spokesperson, Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, was gunned down by the Andhra Pradesh police in the forests of Adilabad district early Friday.

The “encounter,” in which a courier was also killed, came just two days after the rebels massacred 27 CRPF jawans in Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh.

MP Vijayashanti arrested for provocative remarks

Hyderabad, July 03: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader and MP Vijayashanti was arrested Saturday for making inflammatory remarks ahead of the July 27 byelections to 12 assembly seats in Telangana, police said.

Tension prevailed near her residence in Banjara Hills as police used force to disperse TRS workers who had gathered there to resist their attempts to arrest the actress-turned-politician.

Hyderabad, July 3 (Siasat News): The west zone task force arrested a man for trying to extort money from massage centers by pretending to be a reporter from a local news channel.

According to the police, Motaparti Vamsi Siva Krishna alias Chowdary, 26, was earlier a reporter in a local news channel. On April 15, he along with Surya Babu, Sunil Raj and Basha trespassed into the house of one M G Nirmala, a resident of S R Nagar.

13 killed in Pakistan accident

Islamabad, July 03: At least 13 people were killed and five injured when a van packed with tourists fell into a ravine in northern Pakistan Saturday.

The accident occurred at Nousehri in Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistani Kashmir, Xinhua said.

Stress, insecurity high in Gaza after Israeli assault

Gaza City, July 03: The Israeli assault on Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009 inflicted high levels of stress and insecurity on its Palestinian population, a study published by The Lancet said.

The paper in the peer-reviewed British journal provides statistical backing for doctors who say the operation in addition to killing around 1,400 Palestinians and injuring thousands more left deep psychological scars.

Egypt arrests eight Muslim Brotherhood members

Cairo, July 03: Egyptian security forces arrested eight members of the Muslim Brotherhood after searching their homes and confiscating their computers, data discs and books, a spokesman for the group said on Friday.

The arrested members had launched an online campaign called “Amal Al Omah” (The Nations’ Hopes) (http://www.amlalommah.net/) calling for the prosecution of the head of security in Alexandria for police violations, Hamdy Hassan, spokesman for the group’s parliamentary bloc, told Reuters.

Six killed by Egyptian building collapse

Cairo, July 02: At least six people were killed when a four-storey residential building collapsed in Cairo’s Shubra neighbourhood, the state news agency MENA said.

The dead included two children and a man believed to be in his forties, MENA said.

“Rescue forces continue to search for any survivors or victims beneath the collapsed building,” it said.

Bhopal gas case: All convicts get bail

Bhopal, July 03: A day after a session court granted bail to Keshub Mahindra, a convict in the 26-year-old Bhopal gas tragedy case, the remaining six accused were released today on a bond of Rs one lakh each.

On June 7, all the seven persons were convicted by CJM Mohan P Tiwari in the Bhopal Gas tragedy case following which they filed an appeal against the judgement in the same court.

“The script was really appealing since it dealt with an issue. I was not aware of the Naxalite movement a-year-and-a-half ago. I want to dedicate myself towards it now, ” Sameera, 27, told.

Mumbai, July 03: Konkona Sensharma recently shot for a guest appearance in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf.

The film’s lead actress is Priyanka Chopra. Vishal narrated the role to Konkona over the phone and she immediately agreed to be a part of the film. She flew down to Pondicherry and shot her scenes over two days.

Apparently Konkona’s character is pivotal in the relationships Priyanka’s character shares with two of her husbands. Konkona does not share screen space with Priyanka.

Mumbai, July 03: When Anurag Basu came to know that Vaastu Shastra director Sourabh Usha Narang had succumbed to stomach cancer, the news hit home.

Anurag is himself a cancer survivor and he knew he had to do something for Sourabh.

So the Kites director has arranged for a condolence meet of Sourabh’s friends so they can remember the young director, who was just 37 years old and on the verge of signing a deal with UTV when he passed away.

The meeting has been scheduled for Sunday evening at the ISKCON temple at Juhu.

Sourabh is survived by his wife and a three year old son.

Mumbai, July 03: Actor Kunal Kapoor loves to learn new skills for his films, but says he is bored of practicing parkour, an acrobatic street sport, for action film “Doga”.

“Does any kind soul know of anyone or any group that practices parkour in Mumbai? It’s rather boring to jump around on your own, ” Kunal posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

“Anyone that provides information will be rewarded by a backflip!! Okay, let’s make that two!” he added.

Maoist couple arrested Andhra district

Hyderabad, July 03: A Maoist couple who entered Andhra Pradesh from neighbouring Chhattishgarh was arrested on Saturday from the state’s Khammam district, police said.

M Deva alias Devanna, an area committee member of Kunta in Chhattisgarh and his wife Jogi were taken into custody from Palvoncha on the district outskirts this morning when they were found moving in a suspicious manner, Khammam police said.

The arrested duo are being interrogated and further details are awaited, they said.
