Muralitharan to quit Test cricket after Galle match

Colombo, July 06: Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muraitharan, the world’s leading wicket taker and one of the finest exponents of spin bowling, today announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a glittering career spanning 18 years.

The first Test against India in Galle, beginning July 18, will be the last game for the 38-years-old Muralitharan, who has taken an amazing tally of 792 wickets in 132 Tests and 515 wickets in 337 ODIs.

No new private helipads to be allowed : Ramesh

New Delhi, July 06: New private helipads will not be given clearance by his ministry as it violates permissible noise levels, Environment minister Jairam Ramesh said today, a move that is likely to upset plans of many business tycoons keen to have such structures.

“It’s a strict no no for a new private helipad as they violate noise norms.. Only government-owned helipads will be given clearance from my ministry,” Ramesh said on the sidelines of a function here.

He was replying to a query on the status of Maharashtra’s plan to set up helipads on the rooftop of buildings in the city.

Four extremists killed in factional feud

Medininagar (Jharkhand), July 06: Four extremists of Tritiya Prastuti Committee, a breakaway group of CPI-Maoist, were killed today in a factional feud in Jharkhand’s Palamau district, police said.

All the bodies were recovered from Revda forest and sent for postmortem, Palamau SP Anup Mathew told reporters here.

Police suspect the extremists clashed with one another over control over the outfit.

Arrested ISI agent had entered Tripura to go to Punjab

Agartala, July 07: An ISI agent, who was arrested here along with six Indian collaborators, has confessed during interrogation that he had entered Tripura via Bangladesh to go to Punjab to monitor army movement there and report to ISI headquarters, police said today.

“Now it is established that Munir Khan alias Omar Asraf, arrested on June 4 from the city outskirts, is an ISI agent.

New Delhi, July 06: Over 40,000 under-16 footballers from 1500 schools would be vying for the top honours in the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy for the National sub-junior Championship to be organised across 75 cities of the country.

Benchmark Sensex up 60 points in opening trade

Mumbai, July 06: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex rose nearly 60 points higher in opening trade today as stocks of companies like Reliance Industries and Infosys staged a moderate recovery on emergence of buying by funds.

The 30-share index, which had lost over 67 points in the previous two sessions, recovered by 59.50 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 17,500.94 points.

Likewise, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty gained 15.20 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 5,251.10.

NC Hills scam accused in judicial custody

Guwahati, July 06: A CBI court today remanded in judicial custody key accused in the development fund diversion scam of North Cachar Autonomous Council R H Khan.

The social welfare department employee, whose seven days CBI custody ended today, was produced before the special court and its designated judge A K Das remanded him in judicial custody and directed that he be produced again on July 20.

CBI, which is investigating the scam, had sought Khan’s custody after the arrest of his brother-in-law Abdul Majid and recovery of Rs 13.65 crore in cash from his residence.

Bundi (Raj), July 06: A court here today fixed July 20 as next date for hearing in a case against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the country’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court will decide jurisdiction of the suit filed by Bundi-based Youth Congress state Secretary Charmesh Sharma in the next hearing.

Sharma alleged in the petition that at a public meeting of the BJP at Gandhinagar in Gujarat on June 5, Modi had said that Nehru had “done nothing for children”.

Buenos Aires, July 06: One of Diego Maradona’s assistants wants him to stay, and a top Argentine football official said the job is his despite the team’s devastating 4-0 loss against Germany in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Bangalore, July 06: Defence Minister A K Antony today said infiltration attempts into Kashmir from across the border were increasing with “conscious, calculated attempts” to push more terrorists into the valley.

“The situation is not grim, but is still a matter of concern. As Defence minister, I think compared to the past the situation has improved substantially. Violence levels have come down, tourist visits this year were more than last year.

However, infiltration attempts are increasing,” he said.

Hyderabad, July 06: Actor-turned-politician K Chiranjeevi on Tuesday described the time of the Assembly spent on discussions and then not implementing the results of those discussions on the ground was a ‘time waste and a disgrace’.

The Praja Rajyam Party chief said that he had been observing the happenings in the Assembly since the last 14 months and was dismayed that public issues were discussed threadbare but nothing was done about solving those issues.

New Delhi, July 06: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday said the Congress was insulting the country’s poor by making “arrogant claims” about the losses suffered during Monday’s all-India strike.

BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed that there was massive people’s support for the strike and the assessment by the Congress party of the losses during the shutdown was naive.

“Who is going to account for the pain and sufferings of the people? The Congress is making arrogant claims about the bandh,” Prasad told reporters here.

Islamabad, July 06: Taliban leader Mullah Omar has not been arrested in Pakistan, a Taliban spokesperson has said.

Zabeeh Ullah told a TV channel that the news of Mullah Omar’s arrest was a US and NATO propaganda and claimed that the US was employing such tactics to save face.

He insisted that Mullah Omar was still in Afghanistan, The Nation reported Tuesday.

Acid attack on woman in AP

Rajahmundry (AP) July 06: Irked by his lover’s constant demands to tie the knot, a man threw acid on her in the premises of a local court in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, leaving her injured, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday in the premises of the court in Indrapalem village when 25-year-old Suryavathi, who works as a sweeper there, asked her lover K Balaji to marry her, they said.

Balaji, who was irked by Suryavathi’s constant demands to tie the knot allegedly threw cleaning acid on her, inflicting critical burns on her stomach and chest, police said.

London, July 06: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is being targeted by a mock twitter account lampooning him.

Just days after Medvedev sent his first microblog from twitter’s offices in California last month, an account called ‘KremlinRussia’ appeared – and swiftly drew more than 1,000 followers, The Telegraph reported.

By Monday, it featured 130 tweets, most of them reacting to entries from Medvedev’s KremlinRussia page.

Three minor girl students drown

Hyderabad, July 6 (Siasat News): Three minor girls who were returning home after school, drowned in a water pit at Ilapur in Patancheru in the outskirts of the city on Monday evening.

The police said the girls aged between 11 to 13 years, may have gone to the pit after answering the call of nature. The victims have been identified as Talari Nagarani, 12, T Mamata, 11 and T Sravanthi 13, all residents of Ilapur tanda.

Bomb blast in front of Nepal parliament

Kathmandu, July 06: A bomb exploded in front of Nepal’s interim parliament in Kathmandu Tuesday, creating panic and triggering intense police search.

However, there were no casualties, police said.

Security forces found pamphlets scattered in the New Baneshwor area, claiming the blast was the handiwork of a new organisation, Dynamic Youth Force.

Though the new budget session started Monday, the house was not in session when the explosion occurred around 11.30 a.m.
