Noel Tata is new MD of Tata Internatinal

Mumbai, July 29: The Tata Group Thursday appointed Noel N. Tata the managing director (MD) of Tata Internatinal. He will be based in Mumbai.

Noel Tata has stepped down as the MD of retail chain Trent where he will continue as its non-executive vice-chairman, said a company spokesperson.

Tata International Limited is engaged in a wide range of businesses and trading of a variety of products like minerals, steel, ferro alloys and engineering products.

Maoist insurgency will be curbed in three years: Chidambaram

New Delhi, July 29: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday expressed confidence that the Maoist insurgency would be curbed in three years with a two-pronged strategy of accelerated development and calibrated police action.

Chidambaram, addressing a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee for the home ministry, stressed that the “primary role and responsibility” to fight Left-wing extremism lay with the state governments.

Air India, Jet lost Rs.127 crore due to strikes: Patel

New Delhi, July 29: Air India and Jet Airways have lost Rs.127 crore due to strikes by their employees since last year, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said in the Lok Sabha Thursday.

“Estimated loss suffered by National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL) on account of these strikes was around Rs.77 crore,” Patel informed the Lok Sabha.

In May this year, two unions of the erstwhile Indian Airlines, All India Aircraft Engineers’ Association (AIAEA) and Air Corporations Employees’ Union (ACEU), had gone on a flash strike.

All set for vote counting in Telangana by-polls

Hyderabad, July 29: Counting of votes in the by-elections to 12 assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region will be taken up Friday.

The state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) I.V. Subba Rao said all arrangements were made for counting of votes, which will start 8 a.m. The first result is expected by 11 am.

Since polling in five of the 12 constituencies were held through ballot papers, the last result is expected by 6 p.m. The results from seven constituencies, where electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used, are likely to be announced in the initial two to three hours.

Satyam scam: Raju set to deny charges

Hyderabad, July 29: Even as the trial in Satyam Computers was put off to July 29, former Satyam chairman B Ramalinga Raju moved his bail application in the AP High Court on Tuesday, saying that he was a law-abiding citizen and it was he who had voluntarily surrendered to the police and that he was cooperating with the investigating agencies in all respects.

The trial was to begin on Monday, but it was again put off as the accused set up legal obstacles following dismissal of one of their applications by the trial court.

New Delhi, July 29: Terming former Gujarat minister Amit Shah a chick, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Thursday dared the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to arrest the broiler – Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

“Amit Shah is just a ‘chuza’ (chick), the broiler is still to be arrested,” Lalu Prasad told reporters outside parliament.

Shah, Gujarat’s former minister of state for home, has been arrested for the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

Sohrabuddin case: CBI pits Tulsi against Jethmalani

New Delhi, July 29: Eminent criminal lawyer K.T.S. Tulsi will appear for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shootout case in which former Gujarat minister Amit Shah has been arrested, a government source said Thursday.

“The CBI decided to field Tulsi and an ASG (additional solicitor general) as noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani is providing legal assistance to Shah,” said a government source on condition of anonymity.

Sanju didnot kidnap Manyata’s son

Mumbai, July 29: Earlier there were reports that Sanjay had kidnapped Manyata and Mehraj’s son. the Mumbai Police on Wednesday has said that all allegations against Sanju is false and baseless.

Manyata declared that she had married Mehraj in 2003, but left him as she knew that he was a conman.

Dutt also said that he didnt threaten Mehraj and told that he was not even in town.

Mehraj had written a letter in which he alleged that Sanju’s underworld friends had kidnapped his son. At least 15 cases are lodged at various places against Mehraj.

No request from Kerala to ban PFI: Chidambaram

New Delhi, July 29: The central government has not received any request from Kerala on banning radical Islamic outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), Home Minister P. Chidambaram said here Thursday.

“I’ve not got anything,” Chidambaram told IANS outside parliament, when asked whether the state government had requested the central government to ban the PFI.

Suspected activists of the outfit chopped the hand of a Kerala lecturer earlier this month for preparing an “inflammatory” question paper with references to Prophet Mohammed.

Pakistan plane crash: 58 bodies identified, DNA tests on others

Islamabad, July 29: Only 58 bodies of the 152 killed when an Airbus A-321 crashed in the Margalla Hills near this Pakistani capital have been identified, officials said Thursday, adding that DNA tests would be carried out on the others.

The bodies that could be identified have been handed over to family members, Geo News reported Thursday, when Pakistan observed a day of mourning for those killed in the country’s worst aviation disaster.
