Abu Zayd who Stirred Debate on Quran dies

Cairo, July 07: Nasr Abu Zayd, an Egyptian scholar who was declared an apostate for challenging mainstream Muslim views on the Quran, died here on Monday. He was 66.

The official Egyptian news agency, MENA, said he died at a hospital where he was being treated for an unidentified illness.

Lindsay Lohan gets 90 days in jail

Beverly Hills, July 07: Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail after a Beverly Hills judge ruled that she had violated her probation by missing a string of alcohol education classes imposed for a 2007 drunken driving arrest.

Section 377Beverly Hills superior court judge Marsha Revel ordered the Mean Girls film star to report for jail on July 20.

She also ordered Lohan to attend a 90-day residential substance abuse programme once she has completed her sentence.

Man comes to hospital with snake that bit him

Cuddalore, July 07: Tension gripped the Government General Hospital here when a middle-aged man came for treatment with a snake that bit him, today.

Police said the man, S Palani (45), was working in a paddy field at Thottithoppu village, about 25 km from here, under the Centrally-sponsored Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana scheme, when a venomous rat snake bit him.

Braving the bite, the man mustered enough courage and caught hold of the snake, even as locals called up Tamil Nadu Government’s “108 Ambulance” service for emergency treatment.

15-yr-old girl shot dead by father

Chhatarpur, July 07: In a case of honour killing, a teenaged girl was shot dead here today allegedly by her father for eloping with a married man from another caste, police said.

Munna Yadav, who belongs to OBC community, was angry at his daughter Kalpana (15) after she had eloped last month with a married man named Santlal Kewat, also an OBC but from a different caste, they said.

Yadav, residing at Simra town near here, had brought back his daughter from Kewat’s place yesterday, police said.

Dubai rejects Body Scanners as it contradict Islam

Dubai, July 07: Dubai airports will not use hi-tech full-body scanners because they “contradict Islam” and violate passengers’ privacy, according to reports even though the scanners can detect terrorist threats like those posed by the Christmas Day bomber.

Neither of Dubai’s two airports will use the scanners “out of respect for the privacy of individuals and their personal freedom,” the head of airport security for the emirate told.

PA tepid on Obama’s direct talks call

Gaza, July 07: The Palestinian Authority (PA) says further progress in indirect negotiations is needed before direct peace talks with the Israelis could start.

Acting PA chief Mahmoud Abbas “insists on the necessity of progress in indirect negotiations on core issues (borders, security) before going to direct negotiations,” his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP on Tuesday.

“The Palestinian leadership awaits answers on borders and security in order to know if it should undertake direct talks,” he added.

Plane damaged after bird hits

Jaipur, July 07: The plane of a private airlines was damaged after a bird hit it during landing at the Sanganer airport here this afternoon.

Pilots managed safe landing, airport sources said.

The plane which brought 130 passengers from Ahmedabad, was set to land at the airport here this afternoon when a bird hit one of its wings.

The accident caused damage to the plane, however, nobody was hurt as pilots managed safe landing.

The airlines,later, arranged train to take passengers to Ahmedabad on the return flight.

French parliament opens debate on veil ban

Paris, July 07: The French parliament late Tuesday began debating a proposed law to ban veiling of faces in public, a controversial move aimed mainly at traditional dress worn by some Muslim women.

If the bill becomes law, any woman wearing the face veil in public would be liable to a fine of 150 euros ($184), or be obliged to take a class in citizenship, or both.

In addition, anyone forcing someone to conceal her face because of her gender would face a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine of up to 30,000 euros.

2 Days Naxal bandh from today

New Delhi, July 07: A two-day bandh has been called by the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) to protest the killing of their spokesperson Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad by the police in Andhra Pradesh.

The Centre has asked all Naxal-hit states to take all precautionary steps to thwart any attempt of violence during the bandh.

It has also asked the Indian Railways to take all possible measures to protect its properties and passengers during the 48 hour bandh called by the CPI(Maoists) beginning today.
